Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties Blu-Ray Review (Severin Films)

Severin films brings the Jess Franco spy, softcore, comedy, torture film, “Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties” to Blu-ray. For fans of the film, there are two versions of the fairly inept and out of focus opus to choose from. The first being the French version in HD, “Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties,” and the second being the Spanish version in standard definition entitled “Ópalo de fuego: Mercaderes del sexo”.
The plot of “Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties” is a doozy. Two prostitutes are forced to spy on a rich couple who are kidnapping famous woman and turning them into sex slaves for the elite. The pair of prostitutes is aided by a flamboyant homosexual (depending on which version) and a group of cave dwelling hippies.
Jess Franco is hands down one of the most prolific directors of Euro-cinema. Jess has directed hundreds of features and never lets a budget or lack of quality stop him from completing a film. See “The Castle of Fu Manchu” if proof is needed. This particular film has so many out of focus camera shots that when Stephen Thrower suggests in the special features supplement that it’s on purpose, there isn’t much ground to deny it. This isn’t the only problem with “Two Female Spies,” the dubbing is atrocious even if it ends up being hilarious. A highlight is with a pair of guards, when they talk about bumming matches in such ridiculous ways, it’s hard to gain your composure afterword. The film's tone and plot points jump around similar to the two mostly naked leads. At times, the film is a spy farce with a warped sense of humor. The comedy is so warped that our homosexual character is raped by one of the female leads and it’s all played for laughs!? If you aren’t shaken or confused by that, maybe the haphazard put together political thriller aspect will do it, or most certainty the graphic torture rape scenes will!? One thing the film does manage to do right is a large action set piece involving a helicopter chase and one of the spies. The desert landscape in this scene and the machine gun bullet ricochets that chase our lead seem professional even if the professionalism doesn’t bleed into the next one. By the end of the film, one can only shake their head in dismay at the switches from night to day shots within mere seconds. As the film wraps up and the viewer wakes up, they may wonder if the titillation was worth the duration.
Depending on which version of the film you chose to watch, the changes are drastic and characters, plot points, and tones are different though they do manage to use a huge bulk of the same footage. Included on the disc is a great interview with Stephen Thrower and one with the late Jess Franco. Also included are a series of bloopers. “Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties” isn’t necessarily a winner, but the release is jam packed with features and some may find it enjoyable. At the end of the whole ordeal, Jess Franco may get a few guilt ridden laughs with his film and even some surprise arousals to the viewer’s dismay, but it sure won’t go down in anyone’s top movie lists.
Plot Summary:
In this long-unseen shocker from "one of filmdom's most provocative creators" (The A.V. Club), the legendary Jess Franco (VAMPYROS LESBOS) pushes the limits of psycho-insanity like never before: Lina Romay(BARBED WIRE DOLLS) and Lynn Monteil (of Jean Rollin's ZOMBIE LAKE and Franco's SADOMANIA) star as a pair strippers released from prison to work undercover for the U.S. government. What follows is a deranged mélange of audacious international politics that will leave even the most obsessive Franco fanatics slack-jawed in astonishment. Olivier Mathot (CANNIBAL TERROR), Joëlle Le Quément (WOMEN BEHIND BARS) and Claude Boisson (DEVIL HUNTER) co-star in this Euro-rarity, now restored uncut in HD and loaded with exclusive Bonus Materials from the Franco archives.

Ruby Blu-Ray/DVD Review (VCI)

Plot Summary:
"Ruby" is a horror film with the emphasis on atmosphere and suspense, but it also contains enough creepy special effects and blood and gore to satisfy the most demanding genre fans. Most of it takes place at night, with all kinds of marvelous influences lurking in the shadows. Directed by cult-film director Curtis Harrington (Night Tide, Queen of Blood, Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet, Games, What's the Matter with Helen? Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? The Killing Kind) and featuring an impressive cast including Piper Laurie, fresh from her starring role in Carrie, 1976, as Ruby, and Stuart Whitman (Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, 1965). The movie begins in 1935, Ruby Clair, beautiful hostess of a Florida gambling house, watches in horror as her gangster boyfriend is gunned down, his bullet-riddled body sinking slowly into a dark, foggy bayou. That same night Ruby's baby is born. Fast forward to 1951. Ruby now owns a drive-in movie operated by a crew of ex-convicts she has befriended. Her beautiful daughter has never uttered a sound since she was born. One by one her theater employees are savagely murdered. Could it be the work of a rival criminal settling an old score? Or could it be an evil wreaking vengeance from beyond the grave? A psychologist from the state prison tries to find out - and what he discovers is not for the squeamish. This special BD/DVD combo is the definitive original theatrical version of Ruby, with a 2K restoration, 2 commentary tracks and over 2 hours of video interviews and special features!

The Getaway (1972) Blu-Ray Review

The Getaway
Steve McQueen (The Great Escape) and Ali MacGraw (Love Story) are at their finest as husband and wife thieves on the run in this classic Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs) action-thriller. The sizzling screenplay by Walter Hill (The Warriors, The Driver) is based on a novel by pulp legend Jim Thompson (The Grifters, After Dark, My Sweet). The #5 box office hit of its year! Later remade with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.
