Portland-based metal band Red Fang has unveiled their latest single, “Antidote,” through an app written and directed by Wieden+Kennedy creative Ansel Wallenfang. It is the world's first music video game you have to headbang to play!
The mid ’90s–style app, titled Red Fang: Headbang, is available globally for both Android and iOS using either a smartphone or tablet. A tutorial at the beginning teaches users how to appropriately headbang (hint, move your head with your hand/phone). If the user stops headbanging, Red Fang dies. The app features three alternate endings.
The idea came to Wallenfang one night when he noticed how he was moving with his phone while watching a music video. Wallenfang worked with W+K Studios, Wieden+Kennedy’s development and production arm that oversees IP and original entertainment properties, to bring the idea to life.

“Red Fang: Headbang is a culmination of everything I’ve wasted my life on—metal, arcades, and a warped sense of humor. It’s really a love letter to my childhood and all the things that make me, me,” says Wallenfang.
The ’90s arcade aesthetic allowed Wallenfang to marry his love for directing and animation. In keeping with the era it emulates, he filmed the actors against green screens, then processed them into pixels, which were augmented by an artist to add hand-drawn touches. The process, with its DIY charm, fit perfectly for a band like Red Fang.
“When it comes to metal, headbanging is the thing. It wasn’t just interactive for interactive’s sake, so it was an idea I couldn’t let go of. I’m beyond lucky to work at a place that is so supportive. They really helped make my weird vision into what I knew it could be,” said Wallenfang.
RedFang was equally excited about the opportunity, with Bryan Giles saying, “when Ansel Wallenfang first approached us with his video concept we all thought he was crazy! A year or so later we still think he’s crazy, but the video turned out amazing! We’re over the moon about it!”
The development featured a variety of contributors, including Grammy-winning metal musician Matt Pike and comedian Brian Posehn. The game’s intro and outro were written by renowned composer Disasterpeace.
Putting a unique spin on music videos is not new for Wieden+Kennedy, and its track record in the music space—which includes producing three music videos for Grammy Award–winning band Portugal. The Man—meant producing Wallenfang’s Red Fang project was a no-brainer.
Red Fang: Headbang users can keep track of who reigns supreme in headbanging with a leaderboard and learn score-boosting strategies, which will be released in the coming weeks.
Today Reykjavik-based post-punk and goth trio KÆLAN MIKLA is releasing a video for the title track from their latest album, Nótt eftir nótt. The video is receiving the deluxe treatment; a double-premiere, with taste-making music site Post-Punk premiering it in Europe, and everything-horror destination Rue Morgue handling the premiere in the Americas. The video features the band, including producer Barði Jóhannsson, in a Blair Witch-inspired woods setting.

KÆLAN MIKLA is an Icelandic dark-wave trio based in Reykjavik who was personally invited by Robert Smith of The Cure to perform at his curated Meltdown Festival in 2018. They recently completed a 30-date tour in Europe, in support of their Artoffact Records release Nótt eftir nótt. Nótt eftir nótt was a press favourite upon its release, making Revolver Magazine's best of 2018 list, and also garnering accolades from Cvlt Nation, Decibel Magazine, and The Wire, as well as a cover feature in Distorted Sound. The band was nominated for album of the year at the Iceland Music Awards.
ABOUT NÓTT EFTIR NÓTT - quotes by the artists
“You lie in bed, stuck between nightmares and reality. You drown in the shadows around you that start to grow bigger and move closer to you.
That is Nótt eftir nótt. The title song of our album, co-written with our friend Barði from BangGang. The video itself was recorded in one of the few woods we have here around Reykjavík and is inspired by The Blair Witch Project. But the main theme of this album is the night, secrets that lurk in the shadows, the witching hour and that strange place between dreams and reality.
This song is the peak of the album, where everything comes together and we hear the night whispering to us: "nótt eftir nótt eftir nótt, þú sefur ekki..." (translation: "night after night after night, you cannot sleep...")” - Kælan Mikla
“It was such a pleasure to work with the talented Kælan Mikla. As a vampire I also come from a similar universe. We come from 20 hours of darkness and hide when there is light. My goth roots are embraced to the fullest when working with those pure talents.” - Barði Jóhannsson

Cutting their teeth in various outfits over the years, after idly deciding to crawl into a garage one day, three unassuming dudes emerged into sunlight as a mighty hard rock triumvirate skilled in the execution of maximum Sabbath, Priest and Zeppelin worship.
Running an aural gamut of ’70s-sounding classic rock with the influence of melodic heavy-hitters from the contemporary realms of desert, doom metal, psych and stoner rock, the band coalesced in the summer of 2014 with the intention of turning heavy riffs into the catchiest of tunes. With seven songs eventually making the cut on what would become their self-titled debut, the trio earnestly self-released their efforts via Bandcamp, and in doing so caught the ear of Ripple Music. Garnering some early praise one reviewer commented on just how well the band managed to, “Forge their own searing, raucous guitars; intense, deep bass; and athletic, punctuated stickwork around some of the most intelligently interesting melodies to float through the stonersphere in quite some time."
Salem's Bend subsequently signed with Ripple, who gave their debut a worldwide release on vinyl, CD and digital in 2016. Since then, they have been taking their hard-hitting live performance on the road, touring every few months around the Western US and Canada and playing festivals such as SXSW, More Beers in Hell, Vantopia, and many more.
This May, thanks to the good folk and fellow Californians at Ripple, Supercluster – Salem’s Bend eagerly awaited follow-up to Salem’s Bend – will receive an official worldwide release on 24th May. In the meantime, you can stream and share new song ‘Spaceduster’ via Ripple Music and catch the band across Europe (see dates below) as they tour in support of the new record.

Formed in the city of Norrköping in 2009, Skraeckoedlan – a reference to ‘Godzilla’ in Swedish – are one of the most ambitious, original and multidimensional bands to emerge from Scandinavia in recent years.
Like Galactus-in-reverse, their talent for constructing new worlds from the building blocks of heavy psychedelia and progressive rock is simply awe inspiring, and this February will see the release of their most accomplished vision yet… Eorþe (Translated; ‘Earth’).
In collaboration with sci-fi author Nils Håkansson who wrote the story behind the album specifically for Skraeckoedlan, Eorþe is set in the 1920s amid a mystery heavy with Lovecraftian influence and philosophical nuances. As the band explains, “This is by far our most ambitious work of art yet. It’s been a real challenge to do someone else’s story justice whilst making the songs cohesive as well as standing strong on their own. It took a lot of effort, but we’ve done just that.”
Having loyally served as heralds to Nordic folklore and science fiction since their inception, following the release of their early EPs in 2010 the band gained the kind of attention that could only lead on to the creation of a much-admired debut album in Äppelträdet (2011, translated; ‘The Apple Tree’) produced by Oskar Cedermalm from the legendary fuzz band Truckfighters.
Live shows with the likes of Orange Goblin, Kylesa, Greenleaf and other giants of the genre followed in the wake of Äppelträdet’s success and in 2015, with production underway on their follow-up album Sagor (Translated; ‘Tales’) Skraeckoedlan worked with a number of acclaimed producers including Niklas Berglöf (Ghost, Den Svenska Björnstammen) and Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, In Flames, El Caco).
It wasn’t however until they met producer and technician Erik Berglund that they really found what was missing. Lifting the band to entirely new levels of musicianship, under his tutelage the creative process for Sagor not only left the band with an album they were immensely proud of, but one that sat deservedly at number two in the national Swedish vinyl sales chart in August, 2015.
Heading into 2019 with the help of Fuzzorama Records, Skraeckoedlan steer a course to Eorþe, their first album in over three years and undoubtedly their most progressive. With the big metal riffs of new single ‘Kung Mammut’ riding shotgun alongside the more introspective and explorative moments of songs like ‘Mammutkungens Barn’ and ‘Angra Mainyu’, the trio have cut a definitive and spellbinding record of light and dark. In addition to the CD and standard vinyl editions, Eorþe will also come in a limited-edition box set which sees the album split across two gatefold vinyl records; Earth: Above and Earth: Below. The set will come packed with pieces of merchandise that revolve around the story and feature alternative artwork.
Eorþe by Skraeckoedlan is released this Friday 15th February 2019 on Fuzzorama Records.

Icelandic post-punk trio KÆLAN MIKLA have debuted the video for their track Draumadís via CVLT Nation, and this week kicked off a month of European shows. Draumadís is taken from their 2018 album, Nótt eftir nótt which was released via Artoffact Records (order here)
Last night the critically acclaimed three-piece kicked off a European tour in Berlin which will run through until March 1. Support on all dates comes from Some Ember. Full dates are below.
Nótt eftir nótt is KÆLAN MIKLA at their most confident - and their most deadly. It’s been five years since Margrét Rósa, Laufey Soffia, and Sólveig Matthildur formed the band in Reykjavík, and after several successful tours and having dominated high-profiles stages, as well as releasing two critically-acclaimed albums, KÆLAN MIKLA has truly brought their A-game.
Starting off quietly with a creepy, gothed-out and ethereal intro, Nótt eftir nótt erupts with post-punk brilliance and synthlines that harken back to the bad old days of the Batcave, big hair, and Egyptian-inspired eye-liner. Tracks like Hvernig kemst ég upp? fuse melody with melancholy, while the band goes for the big goth dance number on Skuggadans, succeeding with glorious ease. Near the end of Nótt eftir nótt, when you’ve already ingested a healthy dose of Diamanda Galas meets The Birthday Party, the title track, produced by popular Icelandic electronic wizard Bang Gang, is a perfect distillation of KÆLAN MIKLA in 2018.
Although their lyrics are written and performed in their native Icelandic, they add a vivid and clear layer to the message of Nótt eftir nótt. Listeners are beckoned into a world of nightmares crossed with fairy tales, moonlit landscapes, and hypnotic shadows. KÆLAN MIKLA are set to take their place amongst the darkest aural poets on the world stage.
"After triumphant sets at Roadburn 2018 and at the Robert Smith–curated Meltdown festival, Kælen Mikla are ready to offer up their debut full-length of searing post-punk/darkwave to the world... The Icelandic trio manages to conjure shadowy influences ranging from Clan of Xymox to the Cure to Tubeway Army on their forthcoming Nótt eftir nótt LP. It's a must for fans of dark music." – Revolver
"Iceland's Kælan Mikla... Raw punk but with a defining, dark, synth dancefloor vibe." – Scene Point Blank
Nótt eftir nótt track list:
3. Hvernig kemst ég upp?
8. Nótt eftir nótt
9. Dáið er allt án drauma

Following on from the release of Nadir in 2015, an album that produced more than its fair share of online fanfare and dedicated followers in the stoner/psych community, Orbis Majora will no doubt prove itself to be one of the most exciting and distinctive records of 2019. Fearlessly taking their music exactly where it needs to go and packing enough technical nous and talent to power an exploratory vessel of sound and substance, the album propels listeners through soaring instrumentals (‘Feeding the Sun’), heavy psychedelia (‘Hemp Fandango’) and spine-crushing progressive cadences. Like a torrent of celestial hail dancing around the inside of your skull, AVER are weighted somewhere between the worlds, galaxies and supernovae of stoner metal and space rock.
For the quartet – who originally formed on the Northern shores of Sydney back in 2008 – their signing to the Californian label heralds yet another stellar addition to the ever-growing Ripple Music Family, and the beginning of a journey out of the underground and into the void.
Orbis Majora by AVER will be officially released worldwide on 18th January 2019 on Ripple Music. Stream and share new song ‘Feeding the Sun’ here – https://soundcloud.com/ripple-music/aver-feeding-the-sun

Portuguese farmers Serrabulho have just released a song from their third album "Porntugal (Portuguese Vagitarian Gastronomy)", which will be out in December, 15th on German label Rotten Roll Rex.
The first "single" chosen is Dingleberry Ice Cream, a song with lyrcs in English and Mirandese - Portugal’s second official language, spoken mainly by elders in the band’s region - that tells the story of a Family Frost ice cream salesman (hence the truck’s typical melody being played with a bagpipe) who worked in Miranda do Douro (known as part of Portugal’s "cold lands"), who became frustrated with his lack of success. One day he decides to “tweak“ the ice cream’s recipe, and suddenly his sales go off the charts! Ricardo Santos [Velha Gaiteira, Gambuzinos, Trasga, Bizarma and Zaragaitas] plays the bagpipe on the song.
Porntugal features a wide variety of guest appearances. Besides the bagpipe, Ricardo Santos also plays rabel (similar to an archaic violin and descendend from the medieval rebec), tarota (a catalan wind instrument, that belongs to the Oboes family), adufe (a portuguese square drum), galician tambourine and vieiras (scallop shells).
Manuel Meirinhos [Galandum Galundaina, Trasgo] contributes with additional vocals, sampling and bagpipe. Freaky, the crazy chihuahua barks (a lot) on the song Os Tintins do Tintin. Also, additional vocals throughout the CD were provided by Susana Lima and Hugo Picamilho [PadariaGang].
Some field recordings captured in loco by ethnomusicologist Tiago Pereira & A Música Portuguesa a Gostar Dela Própria [http://amusicaportuguesaagostardelapropria.org/] were used on the disc. With Porntugal, Serrabulho focused on its Portuguese cultural/musical heritage and wrote an intense-yet-exotic album, with multiple layers that result in an ever-more-distinctive effort.
The band also notes that a part of Serrabulho’s twisted aesthetic actually originates from the minds of two young ladies: “Susana Catalão, our most beloved lyricist, has penned the vast majority of the songs’ lyrics, delivering some of funniest stories, written in an exquisite way that lets us delve ever-deeper in our craziness. Meanwhile, Marta Peneda’s cover art has been the band’s calling card. Every time we talk to either Susana and Marta about some ideas we had, they return to us with even more deranged concepts than the ones we initially brainstormed.”

Today, WINDHAND unveil their sinister new video, "Red Cloud". Director and animator Zev Deans follows the exploits of a washed-up Warlock and his imbecilic Henchman as they attempt to summon The Scarlet Woman. It's saturated with the visual style of technicolor horror and blends live-action with animated scenery. "Red Cloud" is equal parts homage to and satire of the psych-horror of the 1960's, specifically the works of Jean Rollin and Roger Corman's Poe series and it's here just in time for Halloween.
"Red Cloud" is the latest single from the Windhand's highly acclaimed, Eternal Return, released earlier this month on Relapse. The album is a complete life-to-death journey. As unplanned things go, it's an observation of as well as a reflection on life's ups and downs, joys and sorrows, beginnings and ends. In recent years, WINDHANDwelcomed new life, survived lineup changes, and mourned unexpected death. The songs and song ordering are the direct result of those experiences.
WINDHAND’s 4th studio album Eternal Return is out now on CD/2xLP/CS/Digital on Relapse Records. Physical packages are available for order HERE and Digital Downloads/Streaming AT THIS LOCATION.
Eternal Return, produced by Jack Endino (Soundgarden, Nirvana), represents a new era for the group, a chrysalis moment that takes them to new and unforeseen heights. Boosted by Garrett Morris' consistently cool riffs-forged at the crossroads of Iommi's otherworldly import and Kurt Cobain's spontaneous precocity-powered by Ryan Wolfeand Parker Chandler's groove-laden rhythms, and propelled by Dorthia Cottrell's smoky yet wistful vocals, WINDHAND's new album is a two-step jump for Richmond's finest purveyors of the psycho-actively heavy.
WINDHAND continue on their extensive North American tour tomorrow in support of Eternal Return tomorrow in Philadelphia. Check below for a full list of dates.

Joe Keithley of D.O.A. has made numerous attempts to break into politics over the years, and now it's finally paid off. EXCLAIM! reports that the singer has officially been elected to Burnaby city council.
Burnaby - located just outside of Vancouver - has eight city council seats, and Keithley came in eighth place with 15,745 votes. That's just 215 ahead of the first runner-up, Baljinder K. Narang. Keithley represents the Green Party, which is especially significant because he has broken the Burnaby Citizens Association's monopoly on the city council. The centerpiece of Joe's campaign was standing up against people who are being thrown out of their homes (demovitions) and making housing a right, not a privilege.
His past political campaigns over the years have included running with the Green Party in provincial elections in 1996 and 2001. He also sought NDP nomination in the 2013 provincial election, before returning to the Green Party for an unsuccessful by-election run in 2015, followed by another run in 2017. Earlier this year, he announced plans to run for mayor.
D.O.A.'s new album called Fight Back is being hailed as their most innovative album since War on 45 (1982). The band has always been on the pulse of what's going on in the political world.
"When you really think about it, income inequality and disparity is at the root of a lot huge problems, like environmental degradation, war, sexism and hate" said Keithley who has been fighting the good fight for the last 40 years. It's why he's made TALK - ACTION = 0 his lifelong mantra.
Fight Back, released on Keithley's own label Sudden Death Records, is a scathing and timely piece. Joe deals with all manner of unseemly low characters and issues. The album opens with acerbic "You Need an Ass Kickin' Right Now," next rips right into the startling "Killer Cops," then smashes into the anthemic "Time To Fight Back," which is street punk resistance at its fiercest. The album proceeds with the timely "Gonna Set You Straight" with violent and natural ease, and continues with the vitriolic "I Just Got Back From the USA." Then, the album takes a funny twist with "We Won't Drink This Piss" (down with bad corporate beer!) and "You Can't Stop Me," a song in which Joe delves into the character of Slapshot's playing coach Reggie Dunlop (a natural alter ego perhaps).
FINAL 2018 US TOUR DATES:
