Fernando Di Leo was prolific filmmaker who explored the political extremism and mafia corruption in Italy during the 1970’s. Master of garish, intricately plotted, ultra-violent stories about pimps and petty gangsters, Di Leo's films demonstrate the degradation of the working classes and how the mafia corrupted them. His works have been revived and shown at the Tate Modern in London and The Venice Film festival where Quentin Tarantino admitted that Di Leo truly inspired him to make gangster films. Question of the Week - Who would you consider the face of Poliziotteschi film genre? Actor, director etc. in other words when you think of the genre as a whole who do you think of first? – 1:27:19 Update – 1:27:41 “Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror” on Shudder – https://www.shudder.com/movies/watch/horror-noire-a-history-of-black-horror/4548652 Video Reviews"Jack the Ripper" Blu-Ray Review (Severin Films)![]() Written by MrParka Severin Films releases the infamous black and white shocker “Jack the Ripper” on Blu-Ray. “Jack the Ripper” is presented in its original British cut and the slightly longer American cut with a new score. Women are being targeted by a crazed slasher who seems to have a surgical touch to his madness and depravity. A pair of police officers, an American and Brit is attempting to solve the case and prevent any more murders. The list of suspects is long and includes some distinguished names. Can the police figure out who is responsible for the White Chapel Murders and keep the citizens safe both from committing and being a victim of vigilante justice? “Jack the Ripper” is a fairly standard story about the maniac that incorporates the townspeople’s unhappiness and fear while showing a series of murders and police procedures. What makes the film stand out is some of the boundaries it attempted to push in its uncut form, showing post mortem breasts of disemboweled women. The film wasn’t particularly graphic by today’s standards, but definitely was nothing to bat an eye at in 1959. This footage only remains in the European version, unfortunately (and the scenes are included on this disc as a bonus feature). These cuts make this flick a little dull in spots, but violence and sleaze isn’t the only thing this movie had to offer. It has a surprising interest in its characters, in particular its victims. None of which, with the exception of one, are portrayed as seedy underbelly prostitutes. In fact, the film seems to at least spend a moniker of time developing the victims. This makes for some genuine sympathy to be felt by the viewer. By establishing the side characters the film’s solid sets seem to come to life a bit more and the dense fog and dark alleys seem a bit more real. As for the mystery of the film, it works; there are tons of red herrings and little touches that will keep you guessing until the final scene that ends with a rewarding yet completely fictionalized outcome. Severin Films has included a few treats on the disc. Besides the two versions of the film we have some featurettes, an Interview with Denis Meikle, Author of “Jack the Ripper: The Murders and the Movies” and "The Real Jack the Ripper", both of which give a little insight on the real case and the history of Jack the Ripper in film. Also included is an audio Commentary With Co-Director/Co-Producer/Co-Cinematographer Robert S. Baker, Screenwriter Jimmy Sangster, Assistant Director Peter Manley, Moderated by British Horror Historian Marcus Hearn. Overall, Severin has done the best they can to clean up the film; they give us a warning in the beginning about the quality. The US version looks a bit better and is presented in what is the correct aspect ratio, but has a new score which some may enjoy less than the UK version’s score. Description In 1959, legendary showman Joseph E. Levine unleashed this grisly UK thriller on American moviegoers. But when audiences were horrified by the film’s startling violence, graphic nudity and bloody Technicolor climax, it became one of Levine’s most notorious failures. Today – in its notorious UK cut and the American version with a brassy new score – it remains among the most underappreciated and provocative shockers of its time. Eddie Byrne (THE MUMMY), Lee Patterson (TV’s SURFSIDE 6) and John Le Mesurier (DAD’S ARMY) star in this lurid classic produced/directed by Robert S. Baker & Monty Berman (BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRE) and written by Hammer Films’ legendary Jimmy Sangster (THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, HORROR OF DRACULA) that FilmFracture.com calls “the perfect combination of murder mystery and horror film with just the right amount of lovely ladies!” Special Features: British Version US Version Audio Commentary With Co-Director/Co-Producer/Co-Cinematographer Robert S. Today I Exist The Real World meets Saw by way of Suspiria in this super-smart, super-gory - and, sadly, super-overlooked - late '90s slasher effort from filmmakers Daniel Liatowitsch and David Todd Ocvirk, released in the midst of the post-Scream slice-and-dice revival. A group of youngsters arrive at a snow-covered house under the guise of participating in a "grounding-breaking" new experimental film. With the entire property fitted out with cameras, their every move will be recorded. But when the house locks down, trapping the youngsters within, it soon becomes clear that something sinister is afoot. Scream - you're on camera... Marketed as little more than a generic horror flick at the time of its release, Kolobos, far from being a run-of-the-mill slasher clone, has much more in common with the booby-trap stylings of Cube (1997) and the reality TV theme of My Little Eye (2002), which it preempted by some three years. Sergio Martino is no stranger to the Giallo film and this bizarre mystery of a flick that involves cults and black magic rituals is one of his most unique. After a tragic car accident which resulted in a miscarriage, Jane begins suffering from nightmares and a feeling of constant fear. This fear is amplified when she begins to spot a malevolent man who no one else seems to notice. Before long, Jane is caught in a world of black rite rituals and murder. Cult icon Edwige Fenech stars alongside a handful of familiar faces, including Nieves Navarro, George Hilton, and Ivan Rassimov. Each of these Giallo staples plays a pivotal role in the film and tie in directly with Jane’s fragile psyche. The opening is probably one of the most risqué and impactful scenes in the film, giving us a look at a haunted woman who not only feels guilt but an impending doom. It's obviously a dream sequence with its soft lighting and blurry focus, but the layer of deception that the film starts off on will continue and carry on between encounters with friends and family. The almost lullaby style score plays directly into the loss of her child and plays into her childlike innocence. This childlike innocence lets Fenech be sucked into a world of cults that may or may not be real. Playing on people’s fragile mental state has been a staple of the Giallo and incorporated due to the influence of gothic films. This plot device in other films may seem fairly standard, but with the addition of the strange cult like rituals and sexual nature of them, it becomes a little bit more interesting. Within the first two acts of the film there doesn’t seem to be nearly any murders, which could leave some audiences a tad bored, but by the 3rd act the bodies begin to pile up and eventually reveal the killer. The revealing of the killer is done in a nice and simple set up and payoff that the audience will probably see coming. The murders aren’t as elaborate as one would like, but usually have good payoffs during the discovery of them or the lead up. The chase scenes also have their clever moments. When Jane is being chased by a hatchet welding cult member she narrowly escapes one of his swings and the hatchet strikes the wall and cuts a wire in the front of frame, in the background a light flickers off. This scene may sound standard, but the way it is shown adds for a nice little trick that adds some flair to the film. The staircase and elevator combination that sits in the center of the apartment our lead lives in makes for a great suspense centerpiece where villains can hide and heroines can run. It leaves for some good camera work and some solid depths in the shots. The film also adds a layer of premonition which makes the film almost surpass just a crime Giallo and flirt with the supernatural. Just as Jane had an awful dream in the beginning that revealed something to her subconsciously, she has another one that has a sort of precognitive notion that someone is going to attack. This little addition helps "All Colors of the Dark" stand out more than the run of the mill criminal procedural Giallo and is well worth any Giallo fan’s time. Severin Films has included a slew of special features. The standout is of course the wonderful Audio Commentary with Kat Ellinger, Author of All the Colors of Sergio Martino. Peter Baldwin (The Ghost, The Weekend Murders) stars as Bernard, a depressed novelist who sets off in search of his old flame Tilde (Virna Lisi, La Reine Margot), a beautiful maid who works at a remote lakeside hotel. Bernard is warmly greeted by the hotel owner Enrico (Salvo Randone, Fellini's Satyricon) and his daughter Irma (Valentina Cortese, Thieves Highway, The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire), but Tilde has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Bernard undertakes an investigation and is soon plunged into a disturbing drama of familial secrets, perversion, madness and murder... Co-written by Giulio Questi (Death Laid an Egg, Arcana) and co-directed by Luigi Bazzoni (The Fifth Cord, Footprints on the Moon), The Possessed masterfully combines film noir, mystery and giallo tropes, whilst also drawing on the formal innovations of 1960s art cinema (particularly the films of Michelangelo Antonioni.) Overshadowed by the giant hit “Silence of the Lambs,” this underseen, interestingly cast film gets another moment. “Skinner” follows the story of a serial killing drifter named Dennis Skinner (Ted Raimi) who rents out a spare room at the house of a quarreling couple, Geoff and Kerry Tate, the latter being played by Rikki Lake. It’s not long before Skinner is up to his old tricks, cutting up prostitutes and collecting their skin. Skinner has not only brought his duffel bag of cutting utensils with him, but a former victim (Traci Lords) with a vendetta, hiding in the shadows and ready to strike and stop the insanity for good. “Skinner” feels like it’s an incomplete film, a lot of the major moments seem to have no transitionary scenes. They sort of stumble into each other, leaving the audience not confused but unfulfilled. The film takes place in only a few primary locations, bouncing back and forth between Traci Lords in her seedy motel (which seems to be from the same ilk as a Psycho film) and Dennis’s primary locations; work, living quarters, river, and the strange, rundown, industrial ghetto filled with prostitutes in what would appear to be a low traffic area. The production design on all these locations is good and is amplified by their lighting. The director Ivan Nagy, being a photographer beforehand, seems to have given him a good eye. The bright colors really pop and are best showcased in the murder scenes. The effects are done by the now legendary KNB Effects; they are fairly well done, but a little on the light side. The most ridiculous and sloppy moment in the film is the introduction and the elimination of one of the film’s bit characters. The character of Eddie is introduced as a failed African American boxer and coworker of Dennis’s with a temper. He and Dennis have a brief negative exchange. We then cut to our titular character walking down the street with Eddie’s skin on, yelling rather ridiculous and stereotypical lines of dialogue in a very poor imitation of the character. The film takes zero time to establish Eddie as anything but a one dimensional character just to kill him off and proceeds to showcase his death as a somewhat embarrassing exercise in outdated racial stereotypes. It’s not really offensive, just nonsensical. The tone of the film flirts with being disturbing to silly and Ted Raimi is perfectly capable of doing that. As far as the film is concerned, however, it doesn’t exactly work. The entire film really feels like a mismatch of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Psycho” with a sleazy 90s small town setting. The performances are decent to good, the set production design and locations are pretty interesting, and some of the lighting is very well done, but the film never really comes together. It’s worth seeing and still remains a nice look into the 90’s serial killer films of the time. The special features tell a story that may be more interesting than the film itself. Included on the disc are interviews with Ted Raimi, Ivan Nagy (now deceased), the editor, and the writer. These interviews cover everything from the scandal with Nagy and his relationship with then girlfriend Heidi Fleiss to the post production and the problems in finding the elements. The special features are well worth your time and the price tag. The film looks and sounds great and it’s amazing to know the hard work that went into making this Blu-Ray possible. “Skinner” isn’t a great film, but it’s worth seeing as are the special features. Product Description: It’s been called “sleaze-oozing” (Flick Attack), “gut-churning” (The Bedlam Files) and “incredibly tasteless” (Cult Reviews). It featured the most intensely graphic scenes yet by KNB EFX Group (THE WALKING DEAD). Uncut, it remains perhaps the most disturbing – and rarely seen – shocker of the ‘90s: Ted Raimi (XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS) delivers an unnerving performance as psycho drifter Dennis Skinner who wears flesh-suits he slices from doomed prostitutes, falls for a lonely young housewife (Ricki Lake of HAIRSPRAY fame), and is himself hunted by a horribly scarred survivor (an equally unhinged performance by Traci Lords). Richard Schiff (THE WEST WING) co-stars in this still-potent sickie from veteran television director – and one-time Heidi Fleiss boyfriend – Ivan Nagy, now scanned in 4k from the original camera negative and including the complete hooker-flaying sequence.
