"Emanuelle and Francoise" Blu-Ray Review (Severin Films)![]() Written by MrParka Joe D’Amato is back in all his sleazy glory thanks to Severin Films. George Eastman and Rosemarie Lindt star in Emanuelle and Francoise, a revenge tale filled with sex and depravity and in HD. When Francoise tosses herself in front of a train her sister, Emanuelle, is left to identify the body. She is given a suicide letter from the police that reveals why her sister chose to take her own life. Emanuelle decides to get justice for the mistreatment of her beloved sibling by making the perpetrator pay. She quickly seduces Francoise’s former boyfriend (Eastman) and locks him in a two way mirror and begins driving him mad with sex parties and tortures. Emanuelle and Francoise is an exploitation flick, there is no doubt about it. The nudity and depravity is often shoehorned in and made a centerpiece, but unlike many of its contemporaries the film’s director, Joe D’Amato, has finesse. D’Amato’s cinematography is interesting and uses items in the foreground to make the item in motion more appealing. In a simple scene with a cruising vehicle, we see it approach through an array of obstacles. The musical choices and the theme that plays throughout the movie are equal parts beautiful and sad. These elements of film making seem to give a little more weight to the film and take a sleazy and entertaining revenge story and turn it in a heartfelt and tragic one. The early framing device of showing flashes of the past through a suicide note make the entire ordeal seems that much more awful. When our dearly departed is forced to be a prostitute for a sleazy movie producer not only is she filled with disgust and sadness, but so is the audience. The film seems to jump the shark a bit when Eastman, trapped and deprived of water and proper nutrients, begins to have hallucinations a wild dinner party turning into a cannibalistic feast. The feast that partakes is the cast shoving fake looking limbs into their drooling orifices. This scene isn’t the only outrageous centerpiece; the orgy on the dinner table is a spectacle and D’Amato 101. Watch the extended footage for some fine wining and dining, in the words of Joe Bob, "if you know what I mean, and I think you do." Like all good revenge tales, the revenge doesn’t go unpunished nor does the crime and a little clever twist wraps things up. Severin Films has included an interview with George Eastman star and collaborator of Joe D’Amato. Eastman is honest as always and doesn’t mince his words. Also included is an interview with Maria Rosaria Riuzzi who gives a solid interview about the film and her costars. Plot Summary: Severin Films presents EMANUELLE AND FRANCOISE – Joe D’Amato’s sleaze masterpiece on disc for the first time ever in America! On the heels of the ‘official’ Sylvia Kristel sequel EMMANUELLE II and a year before his own first Laura Gemser/EMANUELLE film, EuroFilth maestro Joe D’Amato (BEYOND THE DARKNESS) took the entire formula to new depths of depravity. When a cold-hearted stud (George Eastman of ANTHROPOPHAGUS infamy) drives her sister to suicide, Emanuelle (Rosemarie Lindt of SALON KITTY and WHO SAW HER DIE?) plots a seduction that includes sodomy, torture, J&B, lesbianism, cannibalism, meat cleavers and a super-groovy ‘70s soundtrack. Maria Rosaria Riuzzi (IMAGES IN A CONVENT) and Massimo Vanni (ZOMBIE 3 & 4) co-star in this still-extreme sex sickie – also known as EMANUELLE’S REVENGE, DEMON RAGE and BLOOD VENGEANCE – co-written by D’Amato with fellow filth maven Bruno Mattei (SHOCKING DARK) and now featuring a 2k scan from the original negative. Graced with a remarkable cast headed by Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, and Diane Lane; haunting black-and-white visuals that hark back to German expressionism and forward to Coppola’s own Tetro; and a powerful percussive score by Stewart Copeland that underlines the movie’s romantic fatalism, Rumble Fish pulsates throughout with genuine love and dread. "Hagazussa" Blu-Ray Review (Doppelganger Films)![]() Written Review by MrParka Hagazussa makes its stateside debut thanks to Doppelganger Films. The period piece nightmare is presented along with a short from the film’s director and a handful of other features. Hagazussa follows the story of Albrun, a young mother struggling to deal with the harsh environment of the 15th century. Alburn lives in an isolated cabin surrounded by a forest filled with decay and memories of the past. With a plague decimating the local population and tragedy befalling her, it's uncertain if a dark, supernatural force is present or her sanity is slipping. As cliché as it all sounds Hagazussa is a psychological slow burn that doesn't hold back on much as far as boundaries are concerned. As stated, it takes its time with its story and many may find it meandering as long shots of wandering through the forest became a regular occurrence. This critique is a bit unfair because for what Hagazussa lacks in speed and flashiness it makes up for in subject matter, visuals, and a menacing droning sound design to occupy those long strolls. The music and droning seem to become their own entities creating a sense of dread where each step through the pine seems as if it could be fatal. With the exploration of the forest, relics of the past are discovered. Soon enough you wonder if the forest is alive, bringing up old memories and playing into the character's beliefs and fractured mental state or if the character's past traumas are making it seem that the forest is an entity and quite alive. When the film makes it to the last half or the last two vignettes, Alburn’s past is revealed and the inevitable is clearly at hand. A magic mushroom trip and a dip in the swampy lake stand as a metaphor for rebirth as the film goes into a psychedelic and dark place. The film becomes so dark, in fact, one may ask what is the point to this cruelty. Although we are presented with a reason for the nihilism, it may be just too much for some viewers. Recalling films like A Measure of Sin, The Witch, Long Weekend, and Hereditary, Hagazussa will no doubt leave an impact. The film owes a great deal to its location and sound design, but has an amount to detail and a mean streak that requires attention from horror fans. Product Description: In a remote Alpine village in the 15th century, the orphan Albrun grows up to become a marked woman. The scapegoat of ancient superstitions and monstrous misogyny, this self-styled witch begins to assert her otherworldly birthright. The plague she conjures makes human cruelty look pathetic and small by comparison. This atmospheric debut feature from Lukas Feigelfeld is a haunting pagan death trip and a startling vision of psychedelic horror. Anything but a standard bio-pic, Agony is an unrestrained assault on the ruling class in Russia, whose religious hedonism and political ignorance nearly destroyed the country. Influenced in part by such latter 20th Century phenomena as Charles Manson and The Exorcist, Klimov restages world history with jolting doses of sexual avarice, drunkenness, violence and insanity in startling contrast to staid historical accounts of Rasputin's life and most peculiar death. At the same time that it was criticized for its harsh depiction of royal decadence, Agony was deemed politically blasphemous for its almost sympathetic treatment of Nicholas II (Anatoli Romashin) -- a pathetic, weak-willed Czar who is dominated not only by the mad monk, but by his own wife and child. As a result, Agony, which was made in 1975, was banned for ten years in its native land until, in the era of Glasnost, Klimov's radical political fable was properly recognized and triumphantly set loose upon the screens of the world. Genre stalwart Lee Van Cleef (The Big Combo, Day of Anger) stars as a gnarled ex-sheriff called Clayton who comes to the aid of a young Philipp Wermeer (Alberto Dentice), a fugitive framed for the murder of a powerful figure called The Patriarch. Clayton helps Philipp fend off attacks from bounty hunters in a series of thrilling gunfights before the two make their way to Jefferson to confront three villains known as the Saxon brothers, and reveal who really killed The Patriarch. A complex tale of revenge penned by prolific giallo writer Ernesto Gastaldi (Torso, The Case of the Scorpion's Tail), The Grand Duel benefits from a beguiling central performance from Lee Van Cleef and assured helmsmanship from Giancarlo Santi (assistant director to Sergio Leone on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West). Add to this brew a memorable and tuneful score by composer Luis Bacalov (Django, Milano Calibro 9) and the stage is set for one of the grandest of all the Italian westerns. The legendary Franco Nero (Django, The Fifth Cord) stars in the titular role as a half-breed gunfighter who returns from the killing fields of the civil war to find his hometown riddled with the plague, its inhabitants terrorized (with the help of Keoma's own estranged half-brothers) by tyrannical gang leader Caldwell (Donald O'Brien, Zombie Holocaust). Keoma's father (Willian Berger, Sartana in the Valley of Death) welcomes his prodigal son's return, but when Keoma saves a vulnerable pregnant woman (Olga Karlatos, Zombie Flesh Eaters) from Caldwell's thugs, the stage is set for a violent confrontation. With the help of his father and his friend, the freed slave George (Woody Strode, Spartacus), Keoma prepares to take a savage revenge on Caldwell and his gang. Directed with immense flair and virtuosity by veteran Enzo G. Castellari (who channels Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone in equal measure), Keoma is an epic film of Shakespearean and biblical allusions, which boasts compelling performances and thrilling violent action. Truly epic in scope, Keoma is considered by many to be one of the greatest spaghetti westerns. The film is presented here in a stunning new restoration with a wealth of informative and entertaining new extras.
