One of the most depraved of the naziploitation genre is given the royal treatment with a nice remaster. The release is also accompanied with a feature length documentary about the strange sub-genre of naziploitation as well as an appreciation video by horror film expert Stephen Thrower. A group of Italian resistance fighters plan to overthrow the Nazis while a menacing Ilsa inspired Nazi performs experiments of torture on her prisoners and nearby villagers. “The Beast in Heat” is cheap exploitative cash-in in the vein of previous films of the same genre. It has all the staples that many of the other films have; castration, torture, sadism, lesbianism, but it has something none of the others would even dream of… That’s right, a caged muscular dwarf-like creature who rapes anything he comes into contact with. The film is as repulsive as it sounds. It’s also played completely straight, which would usually make for a devastating watch. However, due to the cheapness, “The Beast in Heat” becomes an unintentional laugh riot. If you aren’t holding down your vomit you will most certainly be chuckling to yourself. It’s hard to decide if it’s the repulsion that causes the nervous laughter or the sheer ridiculousness of the plot, acting, and dubbing that is getting you to hiccup with hysteria. Guinea pigs as rats, women being brutally tortured whose only response is a lackadaisical “You’re hurting me!” are some of the highlights. Not to mention a lead baddie who chews up the scenery like this is her one chance to leave a lasting impression. After all the war and chaos the film has to offer we are treated to a sad ending showing the horrors of war, but after the exploitation puke shake you just forced down it just adds to the hysterics. Severin Films has made “The Beast in Heat” look and sound good; again not many companies would go the extra step to bring such a vile movie to life on Blu-Ray. If the film doesn’t sound like it’s up your alley and I get it, don’t let that steer you away from the release. Included is a documentary covering the naziploitation genre with several vets and experts involved with it. So if you want to see Ilsa herself talk about the genre, this is a must buy. Plot Summary: Severin Films presents BEAST IN HEAT – The most bizarre Nazisploitation shocker ever! More than four decades after the subgenre first shocked the world, the most depraved Nazisploitation sickie of them all must still be seen to be believed. Writer/director Luigi Batzella (THE DEVIL’S WEDDING NIGHT, NUDE FOR SATAN) combines footage from two earlier WWII action movies with a newly-shot plot featuring a sadistic female Nazi officer (Macha Magall of Bruno Mattei’s SS GIRLS), a perpetually aroused caged ogre (Salvatore Baccaro aka ‘Boris Lugosi’ of FRANKENSTEIN’S CASTLE OF FREAKS), and a cavalcade of sexual atrocities that Horror-Extreme.com calls “Tasteless and glorious…it gathers all the ethos of the genre and smashes it into a wonderfully hellish mix.” Never released in America and banned as a ‘Video Nasty’ in the UK, this notorious feast of smut-schnitzel is now scanned from 35mm negative elements with a blitzkrieg of all-new Special Features. Special Features: - Fascism On A Thread: The Strange Story of Nazisploitation Cinema - A new feature length documentary featuring interviews with Dyanne - - Thorne, Malissa Longo, Filmmakers Sergio Garrone, Mariano Caiano, Rino Di Silvestro, Liliana Cavani, Bruno Mattei and many more. - Nazi Nasty - Interview with Stephen Thrower, Author of 'MURDEROUS PASSIONS'. - Trailer. The fans asked for it! After the siege of Bruno Mattei flicks being released we finally got it! “Robowar” debuts on Blu-Ray in a remastered edition packed with interviews. A group of mercenaries face off against an advanced bioengineered weapon of mass destruction in the jungle. Part “Predator”, part “Robocop”, all Mattei. Bruno Mattei is known for ripping popular films off and making cheaper, shameless, yet extremely fun rip-offs. “Robowar” is exactly that. Even with the previous mentioned cheapness, Mattei still put together a solid cast for this outing including b-movie action star Reb Brown, Italian staple Romano Puppo, “Zombie 4” alumni Jim Gaines, and stunt man Massimo Vanni among others. The cast helps the entertainment value quite a bit, they seem to enjoy themselves as well as dedicate themselves to their roles. One can’t help but crack a smile every time Reb Brown opens fire with his machine gun, due to his constant screaming. In fact his performance shifts between calm and collected to violent screaming within seconds throughout the entirety of the film. Shot in the Philippines for a majority in broad daylight, you can literally feel the heat and moisture coming off the film. The twists are obvious. The characters are picked off in similar fashions as they are in “Predator” and the antagonist is ungodly cheap sounding and looking. The robot makes for some real comic moments. Nothing quite like seeing a giant black colored robot with ab plates plodding through the jungle and somehow managing to stealthy sneak by commandos. Not to mention making chirping, robotic chatter which is closer to the robot from “Short Circuit” than anything threatening. For the most part, the film is entertaining and audiences should be pleased. Action, fun, and cheese are all here in bundles. Severin Films has packed this cheestastic flick with some great special features that give one a look at how it was to shoot with Bruno Mattei in the Philippines. From the cast we have interviews with Christine Hickman, Jim Gaines, John P. Dulaney, and Massimo Vanni. All the people interviewed give some nice insight into the making of the film or how they feel about the finished product. Actor John P. Dulaney knows exactly what kind of film “Robowar” is and it was a treat to hear him talk about it being a cult favorite. The interviews with Claudio Fragasso (co-writer/co-director) and Rossella Drudi (co-writer) are always a welcomed edition to any release from Severin. Fragasso talks about how he and Mattei got their start making films in the Philippines as well an awful kidney stone he had while filming there. Rossella Drudi has some laughs at the expense of “Robowar’s” sound design and dives into her career and details about her writing for nearly a decade without any recognition. All and all Severin Films has done a great job taking this b-movie blast and loading it with features that will make it last. Plot Summary: A year before their jaw-dropper SHOCKING DARK, director Bruno Mattei (VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN’S PRISON) and co-writers Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi (NIGHT KILLER, ZOMBIE 4) first collaborated on this brain-melting mash-up of PREDATOR, ROBOCOP and Philippines war movie mayhem. When a team of badass commandos is hired for a jungle rescue mission, they’ll instead find themselves hunted by a kill-crazed creature that is part man, part machine and all glorious ‘80s ItaloSleaze. Reb Brown (UNCOMMON VALOR), Catherine Hickland (ONE LIFE TO LIVE), Massimo Vanni (RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR) and Jim Gaines (ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD) star in this “Freaking awesome must-watch for any action fan” (BMovieCitadel.com). Now scanned in 4k from the original negative and loaded with all-new Special Features. Special Features: - Robo Predator - Interview with Co-Director / Co-Writer Claudio Fragasso . - Italian Rip Off - Interview with Co-Writer Rossella Drudi. - Violence She Wrote - Career Interview with Screenwriter Rossella Drudi. - Robo-Lady - Interview With Actress Catherine Hickland. - Papa Doc's War - Interview with Actor John P. The United States, late 1950s. A time of generational conflict, of immense social change, of bold fashions and toe-tapping music - just some of the elements that collide in thrilling fashion in The Loveless, the feature debut of both its star, Willem Dafoe (To Live and Die in LA), and its directors, Monty Montgomery (producer, David Lynch's Wild at Heart) and future Academy Award®-winner* Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark, Detroit). A motorcycle gang roars into a small southern town en route to the Daytona races, unnerving and angering the locals with their standoffish attitude and disrespect for social niceties. When one of their number, the charismatic Vance (Dafoe), hooks up with sportscar-driving Telena (Marin Kanter, Endangered Species), he incurs the wrath of the girl's father, setting the gang on a collision course with the rest of the town as simmering tensions boil over into violent retribution. Raw, angry and honest, The Loveless evokes, with unflinching clarity, both an attitude and a bygone era, exploring the tensions between two very different Americas - now fully restored and presented in high definition for the first time in this feature-packed new edition from Arrow Video! * 2010, Best Director, Best Picture: The Hurt Locker. In a forest in the heart of Brazil, a young woman sees her life change as well as the lives of everyone around her when she finds the Lost Book of Cipriano, whose magic, besides granting power and wealth to whoever possesses it, can release an apocalyptic evil upon the Earth. When she accidentally unleashes the demonic powers of the book, her world suddenly veers into blood-splattered pandemonium as young Carla now resorts to casting one Satanic rite after another in her desperation to fix a long, corpse-strewn trail of missteps. Among these, Riccardo Freda (I vampiri, The Horrible Dr. Hichock)'s Double Face was marketed in West Germany as an Edgar Wallace 'krimi', while in Italy it was sold as a giallo in the tradition of Mario Bava's Blood and Black Lace, combining elements from both genres for a unique and unforgettable viewing experience. When wealthy businessman John Alexander (the legendary Klaus Kinski, giving an atypically restrained performance)'s unfaithful wife Helen (Margaret Lee, Circus of Fear) dies in a car crash, it initially looks like a freak accident. However, the plot thickens when evidence arises suggesting that the car was tampered with prior to the crash. And John's entire perception of reality is thrown into doubt when he discovers a recently-shot pornographic movie which appears to feature Helen - suggesting that she is in fact alive and playing an elaborate mind game on him... Psychological, psychedelic, and at times just plain psychotic, Double Face stands as one of the most engaging and enjoyable films in Freda's lengthy and diverse career - a densely-plotted, visually-stunning giallo that evokes much of the same ambience of paranoia and decadence as such classics of the genre as One on Top of the Other and A Lizard in a Woman's Skin. Starting off with a little-seen 1970 offering from underrated cult auteur John Hayes (Grave of the Vampire, Garden of the Dead), Dream No Evil is a haunting, moving tale of a young woman's desperate quest to be reunited with her long-lost father - only to find herself drawn into a fantasyland of homicidal madness. Meanwhile, 1976's Dark August stars Academy Award-winner Kim Hunter (A Streetcar Named Desire) in a story of a man pursued by a terrifying and deadly curse in the wake of a hit-and-run accident. Lastly, 1977's Harry Novak-produced The Child is a gloriously delirious slice of horror mayhem in which a young girl raises an army of the dead against the people she holds responsible for her mother's death. With all three films having been newly remastered from the best surviving film elements and appearing here for the first time ever on Blu-ray, alongside a wealth of supplementary material, American Horror Project Volume Two offers up yet another fascinating and blood-chilling foray into the deepest, darkest corners of stars-and-stripes terror. From director Pim de la Parra it’s no surprise the film explores murder, voyeurism, and promiscuous sex which are some themes explored in some of his previous films such as “Obsessions” (also available from Cult Epics). The opening of the film showcases a brutal murder of an American tourist by Sandra and Olga which seems to be done out of rage, jealousy, and even boredom. Olga and Sandra soon return to their home, an isolated farm house shared with a handful of others. When new comer Anton shows up to escort Susan, the group’s matriarch, back to civilization the group's hierarchy begins to crumble and devious things are planned. Instead of getting exposition and deep backstory on everyone, we learn who they are by their actions and relationships. The story moves along quickly while setting up its foreshadowing. The interactions between characters include strange voyeurism, seductions, and even a couple heartfelt connections. One of these seductions takes place the first night Anton stays at the house. The sex is causal without any attachment which is most certainty a reflection of the 70s culture in Amsterdam. “My Night with Susan, Sandra, Olga & Julie” makes nice use of its isolated country location and the unique house most of the action takes place in. The actors weren’t shy about their bodies and the film sports full frontal nudity from both sexes as well as plentiful sex scenes. This seems to be a staple from Pim de La Parra. A pair of oddball characters can’t go without being mentioned, Albert, for instance, refuses to leave a dark room that is lit with only one red bulb. He spies on Sandra and Olga as they make love and discuss their crimes. His entire existence is a major reason for keeping Susan where she is at, for fear of leaving could cause him great mental anguish and further isolation. Although Albert’s actions could seem repulsive to some, he has an aura of sympathy; almost as if he is a trapped victim and Sandra an extension of that entrapment due to her loyalty to him. The character of Piet is the most interesting. While being comic relief to a certain extent, she is also a reminder to the other characters about the murder when she shows up wearing the sunglasses of Sandra and Olga’s victim. Without her, the story would slog forward. By the end of the film Piet is still the same broken character we are introduced to in the beginning. However, her once comic demeanor has taken an ominous turn by having her commit the most memorable and horrific act in the film. Cult Epics has presented a solid film that is equal parts thrilling as it is tantalizing. If someone is looking for a film with interesting human interactions, sexual explorations, and a dark and impactful ending than look no further. Plot Summary: Cult Epics Presents MY NIGHTS WITH SUSAN, SANDRA, OLGA & JULIE – Pim de la Parra’s last “Dutch Sex Wave” film. Susan (FRANK & EVA’S Willeke Van Ammelrooy) lives in an idyllic farmhouse, along with the sex-loving youngsters, Sandra, Olga and Julie and the unstable voyeur Albert. A young craftsman, Anton (Hans van der Gragt), visits and gets surprised by the dangerous ladies. MY NIGHTS WITH SUSAN, SANDRA, OLGA & JULIE was the last of Scorpio’s “Dutch Sex Wave” productions, directed by auteur filmmaker Pim de la Parra, masterfully shot in Techniscope by Marc Felperlaan (THE LIFT, THE NORTHENERS), featuring the last score by composer Elisabeth Lutyens (known for Hammer films and Amicus Productions), and with a screenplay co-credited to Harry Kumel (DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS). The crazy cult horror film features a variety of character actors alongside its star, Martin Sheen, helping make it a well-acted mystery. Police psychiatrist Cal Jamison (Sheen) loses his wife in a tragic accident, leaving him and his son lost. They leave the suburbs for a New York apartment to start things over. Cal’s job begins to intersect in his family and love life when he becomes involved with the case of a young police officer struggling with his sanity. The matters are complicated further when this young officer may or may not be responsible for a string of child murders. These murders are not only putting Cal in danger, but also his remaining loved ones. “The Believers” follows a similar set up to the classic ghost story “The Changeling”. With the film starting out with a horrible tragedy, the lead in the film is sent into a dark and psychological place. Cal often seems to be struggling with being a father and forgiving himself throughout the entirety of the runtime. This guilt plays into the final scenes, although as an audience member you never doubt what Cal will do. The only real complaint is the length. The long runtime is due to the story being a little convoluted. There are too many side characters that seem to lead to the next plot point or character. These scenes all play out during the police procedural parts of the film. These moments could have been shortened and some of the extra characters eliminated, even if a handful of them are enjoyable additions. It’s well shot and uses its locations interestingly enough; the gritty streets of New York are usually filmed dark and with trash surrounding the streets. Although the location has an obvious danger to it, it never feels quite like the cesspool many films would lead one to believe. The twists and turns that happen are sometimes surprising and other times obvious, some seemingly taking inspiration from “Rosemary’s Baby”. Some scenes leave a lasting impression, the body of a dead goat floating in the docks comes to memory. This scene is quickly followed by a shot of a shrine with a ritualistic kill of a child on it. As you can read no punches are pulled here; it kills the young and old, the loveable and deplorable. All around “The Believers” isn’t breaking any new ground, but it’s a solid horror thriller with a few supernatural elements that make it different, but not different enough to stand out on its own completely. It’s worth checking out for people looking for something fairly scary and adult with a strong cast and downbeat ending. DESCRIPTION The Believers, director John Schlesinger’s (Marathon Man) finally crafted, modern-day supernatural thriller, stars Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now), Helen Shaver (Desert Hearts) and Robert Loggia (Scarface). Following the tragic death of his wife, psychologist Cal Jamison (Sheen) and his young son Chris (Harley Cross, Someone to Watch Over Me) relocate from Minneapolis to New York City to start a new life. Enlisted by Lt. McTaggert (Loggia) to help solve a baffling suicide case involving voodoo, Cal soon finds himself in the middle of an investigation with ties to a Caribbean religious cult and a series of ritualistic murders that will place him and those he loves in grave danger. The Believers, based on the Nicholas Conde novel The Religion, is written for the screen by Mark Frost (co-creator of Twin Peaks), photographed by Robby Müller (Paris, Texas) and co-stars Jimmy Smits (TV’s NYPD Blue), Harris Yulin (Another Woman), Richard Masur (The Thing), and Elizabeth Wilson (9 to 5). Earning its cult status due to its sexually explicit nature, it still remains relevant due to its social context. Michael (Hugo Metsers) has recently been released from prison after serving five years for having sexual intercourse with an underage girl. Although his crime is no longer illegal he still is on parole and must fit into society. He quickly moves into an apartment complex with a plentiful amount of women looking for company, married or not. Actor Hugo Metsers seems to have a knack for playing characters that are fairly grey in nature. They aren’t evil, but they are never someone you can truly get behind. The character of Michael seemingly gets into trouble within the first couple hours after he is moved in by starting a relationship with a married woman. This is, of course, after he watches her and her husband having sex from the balcony. At times “Blue Movie” is all about the sexual acts; showing them in detail and at other times presenting a layer of comedy, incorporating Michael’s parole officer Eddie (Helmert Woudenberg). Later the film seems to make a statement about “New Amsterdam” where sex should be more welcomed and one can profit from it, while shortly after portraying a tragic suicide directly related to sex. The intent or meaning of the film in its entirety is a little bit of a mystery, bringing up questions of sexuality, morality, and loyalty. “Blue Movie” is a well shot film using the main location nicely with long shots of the massive apartment complex while a wonderful score plays. The technique is all fine. The story as a whole seems to be a little light, but the scenes in themselves tend to have interesting moments worth checking out. Cult Epics has included a slew of features on the new collector’s edition release. Included on the release are an interview with director Wim Verstappen , an interview with producer Pim de la Parra at the Dutch Sex Wave festival, and an interview with Hugo Metsers Jr., Paris which tells the details about himself as a child finding out about his father’s films in the most unpleasant way. Synopsis The most sensational Dutch taboo film of all time! After five years in prison, an ex-con returns to a society where total sexual freedom is now the norm. What’s more is that the town’s elusive doctor, Dr. Schaeffer (Dean Jagger), is rumored to be conducting sinister experiments on the town’s youth so as to combat the aging process. As the group of young travelers find themselves embroiled in a diabolical scheme of medical madness, they realize – perhaps too late – that they are Dr. Schaeffer’s ideal specimens. A troubled production from its mid-70s beginnings, EVIL TOWN started life as ‘Dr Shagetz’ and was helmed by various directors at different points, including a young Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential). In the early 80s, producer Mardi Rustam bought the film and further retooled it, adding additional moments of sleaze and a strange subplot brewed from his own film, EVILS OF THE NIGHT, eventually retitling it EVIL TOWN. This bizarro mutant film epitomizes the lengths producers would go to re-market their work for the video era. Following a successful rehearsal, a dance troupe set about celebrating with a party. But when it becomes apparent that someone has spiked the sangria, the joyous atmosphere soon transforms into a nightmarish hellscape of violence and twisted carnality as the dancers begin to turn on each other in an orgiastic frenzy. Inspired equally by the worlds of modern dance and esoteric arthouse-horror (chief among them, Dario Argento’s Suspiria and Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession), Climax – which pulses towards its astonishing conclusion with a thumping score by the likes of Daft Punk, Aphex Twin and Gary Numan – illustrates a director at the height of his hallucinatory filmmaking powers. Arrow Films – https://arrowfilms.com/ “Climax” Blu-Ray – https://arrowfilms.com/product-detail/climax-blu-ray/FCD1845 Patreon Pick "Dogtooth" DVD Review![]() Graceful, enigmatic, and often frightening, DOGTOOTH is an ingenious dark comedy that won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, propelling Yorgos Lanthimos to the forefront of contemporary cinema's most ambitious young filmmakers. In an effort to protect their three children from the corrupting influence of the outside world, a Greek couple transforms their home into a gated compound of cultural deprivation and strict rules of behavior. But children cannot remain innocent forever. When the father brings home a young woman to satisfy his son's sexual urges, the family's engineered "reality" begins to crumble, with devastating consequences. Like the haunting, dystopic visions of Michael Haneke and Gaspar Noé, DOGTOOTH punctuates its compelling drama with moments of shocking violence, creating a biting social satire that is as profound as it is provocative. A drama based on a true story. “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” Netflix Streaming – https://www.netflix.com/title/81028570 "The Andromeda Strain" Blu-Ray Review (Arrow Video)![]() Before he created Westworld and Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton first blurred the line between science fiction and science fact with his breakout success The Andromeda Strain. Two years after the novel's publication, Robert Wise (The Haunting) directed the film adaptation, a nail-biting blend of clinically-realised docudrama and astonishing sci-fi visuals that ushered in a new subgenre: the "killer virus" biological thriller. A government satellite crashes outside a small town in New Mexico - and within minutes, every inhabitant of the town is dead, except for a crying baby and an elderly derelict. The satellite and the two survivors are sent to Wildfire, a top-secret underground laboratory equipped with a nuclear self-destruct mechanism to prevent the spread of infection in case of an outbreak. Realizing that the satellite brought back a lethal organism from another world, a team of government scientists race against the clock to understand the extraterrestrial virus - codenamed "Andromeda" - before it can wipe out all life on the planet. Aided by innovative visual effects by Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running) and an unforgettable avant-garde electronic music score by Gil Melle (The Sentinel), Wise's suspense classic still haunts to this day, and is presented here in a stunning, exclusive new restoration from the original negative. Sherlock Holmes is the most filmed character of all time – but it is arguably this 1959 re-telling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic tale The Hound of the Baskervilles, from legendary horror studio Hammer and starring genre stalwarts Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, which stands as the super sleuth’s finest cinematic hour. Rising up out of the swirling mists of Dartmoor, Baskerville Hall stands tall and gloomy. Its occupant, Charles Baskerville, has been found dead in mysterious circumstances. Could Sir Charles have been the victim of the so-called “Baskerville Curse”, which tells of a deadly beast that stalks the surrounding countryside? Unperturbed by the legend, next-in-line Sir Henry Baskerville (a rare leading man performance from Lee) sets out to Dartmoor to assume inheritance of the family estate, under the auspices of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and right-hand man Dr. Watson (Andre Morell). Imbued with an atmosphere as thick as fog, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a superlative gothic yarn which benefits from game performances from Cushing, Lee and Morell, as well as the expert direction of Terence Fisher, known for helming many of Hammer’s most celebrated efforts including The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Devil Rides Out.
