The film is lined with an all-star cast and manages to look polished and professional while being fairly experimental. Included on the new Signature Series edition are a nice amount of features, some of which are being released stateside for the first time. Corky (Gina Gershon), a recently released ex-con and handy women lands a job fixing up an apartment next to a mobster named Caesar (Joe Pantoliano) and his sex pot girlfriend Violet (Jennifer Tilly). Before long, Violent seduces Corky and the two begin an affair, matters are complicated when Violet ask Corky to help her steal 2 million dollars in laundered money. Bound’s plot is straight forward, but due to some stylized moments, editing, and a strong choice of the two leads being lesbians it makes it stand out in a most excellent way. The seduction and following sex scenes are done in such an intimate, close, and personal way that it places the audience inside the room. The scenes create a real sexual tension between the leads, Tilly and Gershon, and makes for a believable affair. The film is shot and lit in a great noir style and manages to have some experimental shots that make the Wachowski’s signature style show. The shot where the camera is strapped to Caesar while he has a meltdown is a powerful choice and puts an exclamation mark on the claustrophobic setting of the apartment. The style of editing is great at making important-yet-talky story points exciting by cutting scenes together from the plan to the action, keeping the runtime to a minimum. All the performances are top notch from the three leads as is expected with a great cast, but the supporting cast delivers just as good. Veterans like John P. Ryan and at the time new comers like Christopher Meloni both have times to shine. “Bound” is a great debut film by a pair of directors who would go on to bigger, but not necessarily better films. Olive Films has included a commentary with the filmmakers and actors, Interviews with several of the key players, and a featurette with films experts. A nice release of a cult film well worth your time from the Olive Signature Series. Limited to 3,500 units! OLIVE SIGNATURE FEATURES New High-Definition digital restoration Audio commentary with writers/directors The Wachowskis; actors Joe Pantoliano, Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon; film editor Zach Staenberg; and technical consultant Susie Bright “Part and Parcel” – with titles designer Patti Podesta “The Difference Between You and Me” – with B. Ruby Rich and Jen Moorman “Here’s Johnny!” – with Christopher Meloni “Femme Fatales” – with Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly “Modern Noir: The Sights & Sounds of Bound” – with cinematographer Bill Pope, editor Zach Staenberg, and composer Don Davis Theatrical Trailer Essay by Guinevere Turner A groundbreaking work of LGBTQ cinema, Bound stars Gina Gershon (Showgirls) as Corky, a tough-as-nails ex-con, and Jennifer Tilly (Bullets Over Broadway) as her lover Violet. A chance encounter in an elevator ignites a torrid affair between the two women, who soon plot to steal $2 million in laundered mob money and pin the blame on Violet’s mafioso boyfriend, Ceasar (Joe Pantoliano, The Sopranos). A stylish neo-noir, fusing classic tropes with hyper-stylized camera work and color design, Bound is a crackling retro-thriller that never strays too far from its noir roots and would become the first in a line of visually dazzling films from The Wachowskis, the writing and directing team behind the Matrix trilogy. Bound features a stellar supporting cast that includes Christopher Meloni (TV’s Law & Order: SVU), Richard C. Sarafian (director of the cult film Vanishing Point) and John P. Ryan (Runaway Train) with exquisite photography by Bill Pope (Baby Driver) and razor-sharp editing by Academy Award winner® Zach Staenberg (Best Film Editing, The Matrix, 2000). Finally the schlocky black and white monster flick is presented in high definition and top notch sound. When a barrel of toxic waste is dumped over the wreckage of a sunken ship along with the skeletons of the lost souls still aboard the unthinkable happens. The mixture of toxic waste, human remains and plant life create a horde of flesh eating sea creatures. The creatures rise from the depths and wreak havoc on the fun loving community by tearing them to shreds. “The Horror of Party Beach” is surprisingly a little ahead of its time in terms of gore and plot points, regardless if the entire thing is complete cheese and isn’t met to be taken seriously. Not only is Del Tenney’s beach party massacre film one of the first gore horror musicals, it has to be one of the first films to feature reanimated creatures that eat flesh. The dialogue and situations would suggest that Tenney and company embraced the camp element of the story and used it to their advantage all while playing into several tropes, especially the carryover scientist angle from the 50s. The balancing act of fun and horror manages to avoid the typical boredom and blandness that other Z Grade fare can fall victim to. The special effects on the creatures are laughable even when hidden behind thick fog, but the Bosco chocolate syrup as blood works like a charm. “The Horror of Party Beach” is a quick goofy ride with a few musical numbers, some early splatter, and a few laughs. It’s cheesy and at times cringe worthy, but never boring. Severin Films has included a solid amount of features including Return to Party Beach: A Retrospective Documentary on The Horror of Party Beach, An Encounter with The Del-Aires (where two of the members play the featured song “The Zombie Stomp”), Shock & Roll: Filmmaker Tim Sullivan On Rock & Roll Horror Movies, and an old interview with Del Tenney himself, where he recollects some good stories about securing the films distribution rights with 20th Century Fox. Severin has done another great job on another would be forgotten B-Movie. Uncut On Blu-Ray For The First Time Ever! In 1964, 20th Century Fox released an independent shocker – shot in two weeks for $50,000 outside Stamford, Connecticut by local producer/director Del Tenney – advertised as ‘The First Horror-Monster Musical’. More than 50 years later, this “absolute classic of exploitation cinema” (Legends Magazine) returns like you’ve never seen or heard it before: When nuclear waste dumped into the ocean mutates a shipwreck full of corpses, it will unleash an onslaught of bikini teens, surprising gore, dubious science, an intrepid maid, The Del-Aires, and arguably the greatest worst monsters in horror movie history. Severin is proud to present this cult favorite from “Connecticut’s own Ed Wood” (Stamford Advocate), now featuring a new 2k scan from the original negative and loaded with all-new Special Features like nothing that ever stalked this earth! Eager to tap into audiences' desire to experience the glamor of the jet set lifestyle, the popular filmmakers of the day rushed to make the most of the exotic locales at their disposal. Arguably no other giallo captured this trend as vividly as The Case of the Scorpion's Tail. The film begins in London, where Lisa Baumer (Evelyn Stewart, The Psychic) learns that her husband has died in a freak plane accident. Summoned to Athens to collect his generous life insurance policy, she soon discovers that others besides herself are keen to get their hands on the money - and are willing to kill for it. Meanwhile, private detective Peter Lynch (George Hilton, The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh) arrives to investigate irregularities in the insurance claim. Teaming up with a beautiful reporter, Cléo Dupont (Anita Strindberg, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key), Lynch resolves to unearth the truth... before he too ends up on the wrong end of the murderer's straight razor. Dustin Mills Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/dustin.w.mills/ "The Changeling" Blu-Ray Review (Severin Films)![]() Written by MrParka Severin Films brings one of the most respected and revered ghost stories to the states on Blu-Ray for the first time ever. One of the most anticipated films to land on the format, Severin handles it terrifically. Peter Medak's legendary film is presented in a remastered edition with plenty of features. Movie star George C. Scott plays John Russell, a music teacher and composer whose family dies in a tragic accident. Filled with grief John moves into a large mansion to mirror his mourning and emptiness, but soon enough John realizes he isn't alone. Inhabiting the house is the ghost of a child who lost their life violently and mysteriously. John becomes a man obsessed in finding out the truth and neither he nor the spirit can rest until it is exposed. “The Changeling” benefits greatly from the performance of George C. Scott. His acting and fine detail facial movements take a B-movie storyline and turn it to high class. Not only is George’s acting top notch, but the entire cast delivers; from veterans like Melvyn Douglas to Mr. Scott’s wife, Trish Van Devere. The set designs are just as impeccable as the cast and shot the same. The array of wide and high angles creates a chilling atmosphere, placing characters in certain parts of the frame builds amazing tension. The score is as classy as the lead and just as haunted as the character. The main theme reflects not only the aurora of the lost child, but John Russell’s grief. “The Changeling” has all the right beats placed at the right times, it truly sets a precedent for all other ghost stories. Without a doubt a great ghost story with a good mystery that keeps the audience invested. Severin has done a knock up job yet again with a bigger property than usual. Hopefully we see more big titles come Severin’s way. The extras on the disc include a commentary with the writer and director as well as interviews with one of the set designers and the composer. The last few items include a location now and then featurette with some familiar horror faces and an interview with an expert who knows the true story of Cheesman Park, the material “The Changeling” was based off of. THE 1980 HORROR CLASSIC FULLY RESTORED IN HD FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN AMERICA Peter Medak’s classic ghost story THE CHANGELING has been out of circulation for years on home video but now looking better than ever in a new HD transfer created from a 4K scan of the inter-positive film element. It is perhaps the most chilling supernatural thriller of our time. It remains a career peak for star George C. Scott and director Peter Medak (THE RULING CLASS, THE KRAYS). Now the film that Martin Scorsese calls “one of the scariest movies ever made” finally comes to Blu-ray: Academy Award® winner Scott delivers “one of his greatest performances ever” (BloodyGoodHorror.com) as a Manhattan composer consumed by grief after his wife and daughter are killed in a shocking accident. But when he moves to a secluded Victorian mansion, he will find himself haunted by a paranormal entity that may unleash an even more disturbing secret. Trish Van Devere (THE HEARSE), two-time Oscar® winner Melvyn Douglas (BEING THERE) and Barry Morse (ASYLUM) co-star in “one of the most unsettling ghost stories ever” (IFC.com), winner of 8 Genie Awards – including Best Foreign Actor, Best Foreign Actress and Best Canadian Film – and based on actual events. Blu-Ray Review (Arrow Video)![]() In 1972, director Massimo Dallamano (Colt 38 Special Squad, The Night Child) broke new ground in the giallo genre with the harrowing What Have You Done to Solange? Two years later, he followed up with an even darker semi-sequel - the chilling What Have They Done to Your Daughters? A teenage girl is found hanging from the rafters of a privately rented attic, pregnant and violated. Hot-headed Inspector Silvestri (Claudio Cassinelli, The Suspcious Death of a Minor) and rookie Assistant District Attorney Vittoria Stori (Giovanna Ralli, Cold Eyes of Fear) are assigned to the case, the scope of which grows substantially when they discover that the dead girl was part of a ring of underage prostitutes whose abusers occupy the highest echelons of Italian society. Meanwhile, a cleaver-wielding, motorcycle-riding killer roars through the streets of Brescia, determined to ensure that those involved take their secret to the grave. Also starring Mario Adorf (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) and Farley Granger (Strangers on the Train) and featuring an insanely catchy score by Stelvio Cipriani (Death Walks on High Heels), What Have They Done to Your Daughters? is a fast-paced, brutal and unforgettable thriller from a director at the peak of his creative powers.
