It’s a welcomed addition to the Arrow Video family. Young boys are being murdered in a small isolated Italian village. A reporter begins to dig into the case when the police seem to be ineffective. Amidst the tragedy, the superstitious and paranoid nature of the town’s people becomes just as ugly as the dead bodies of their beloved children. “Don’t Torture a Duckling” is a film about jaded morals, secrets, xenophobia, and murder. In other words, it's a wonderfully complex Giallo. Surprisingly taking place in a rural setting instead of a city, it stands not alone, but lonely. It's not high class this time, it's poor trash; in a cynic's terms. Duckling’s themes are harsh and upsetting, it refuses to shy away from what it believes in. It’s unapologetic without being purposely confrontational all while managing to be bitterly ironic. “Don’t Torture a Duckling” is about problematic Catholicism and small town superstition without completely demonizing them or exploiting them to an extent of satire. “Don't Torture a Duckling” is a film that shows the closeness a small town can have and the violence it can also breed due to its exclusive attitude. Not everything is white and black in “Don’t Torture a Duckling.” The killer kills not for a sexual nature or gratification, but a moral sacrificial one; even if it is delusional. As the old saying goes, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” The film’s director, Lucio Fulci, struggled with his belief in God and it has never been so apparent in any other of the Maestro’s films. The way outsiders are treated in the film suggests an alienation that Fulci might had felt at times. The whole ordeal feels very personal and makes for an impactful experience. As Troy Howarth put it in the commentary, “one does not enjoy certain parts of this film, they endure it.” As the story and philosophy of the film is intriguing, the technical aspects are just as must so. Riz Ortolani’s score is one of his best. The score is used to its fullest during one of the most tragic and memorable murder scenes in any Giallo. The score is so profound in this scene, it certainty weighs just as heavy on the viewer's soul, as does the circumstances of the murder. The whole murderous ordeal comes to a heartbreaking end as cars screech by ignoring an outstretched hand, covered in blood, begging for mercy. The camera work in “Don’t Torture a Duckling” features quite a bit of hand held work that typically ends on a nice plot point or poignant shot. This approach not only saves money, on set ups, but keeps the pace well and shows the audience a lot with one camera move instead of several lines of dialogue. Tomas Milian, Marc Porel, and Barbara Bouchet are all terrific in their roles, but Florinda Bolkan steals the show as a black magic practicing woman who lives on the outskirts of town. Her performance is intense and deeply sad. “Don’t Torture a Duckling” is a complex movie about complex emotions and ideology, it’s a powerful film that looks at its subjects and themes and condemns them. It does this not as an outsider, but as someone who understands and is part of it. “Don’t Torture a Duckling” contains two wonderful video essays, both of which are vastly educational; one tackling misogyny in the film and another with Mikel J. Koven, author of “La Dolce Morte: Vernacular Cinema and the Italian Giallo Film.” Also included is a super informative commentary by Troy Howarth and interviews with some of the cast and crew, including Florinda Bolkan. “Don’t Torture a Duckling” should be one of this year's most celebrated Blu-Rays. Product Description: From Lucio Fulci, the godfather of gore (The Psychic, The Beyond), comes one of the most powerful and unsettling giallo thrillers ever produced: his 1972 masterpiece Don't Torture a Duckling. When the sleepy rural village of Accendura is rocked by a series of murders of young boys, the superstitious locals are quick to apportion blame, with the suspects including the local "witch", Maciara (Florinda Bolkan, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin). With the bodies piling up and the community gripped by panic and a thirst for bloody vengeance, two outsiders - city journalist Andrea (Tomas Milian, The Four of the Apocalypse) and spoilt rich girl Patrizia (Barbara Bouchet, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times) - team up to crack the case. But before the mystery is solved, more blood will have been spilled, and not all of it belonging to innocents... Deemed shocking at the time for its brutal violence, depiction of the Catholic Church and themes of child murder and paedophilia, Don't Torture a Duckling is widely regarded today as Fulci's greatest film, rivalling the best of his close rival Dario Argento. Arrow Video is proud to present this uniquely chilling film in its North American high definition debut. The result was a colorful, swashbuckling epic of treachery, heroism and forbidden love: Erik the Conqueror. In 786 AD, the invading Viking forces are repelled from the shores of England, leaving behind a young boy - Erik, son of the slain Viking king. Years later, Erik (George Ardisson, Juliet of the Spirits), raised by the English queen as her own, becomes Duke of Helford, while across the sea, his brother Eron (Cameron Mitchell, Blood and Black Lace) assumes leadership of the Viking horde and sets his sights on conquering England once again, setting the two estranged brothers on a collision course that will determine the fates of their respective kingdoms... Featuring a bombastic score by frequent collaborator Roberto Nicolosi (Black Sunday) and memorably co-starring the stunning Kessler twins (Sodom and Gomorrah), Erik the Conqueror showcases Bava's immense talent for creating awe-inspiring spectacle with limited resources. The runaway success of Bonnie and Clyde in 1967 proved massively influential: it made stars of Faye Dunaway and Warren Beauty, introduced a new form of violence to the movies, and inspired a stream of imitators, including Bloody Mama, Martin Scorsese's Boxcar Bertha and the directorial debut of John Milius, Dillinger. Milius presents John Dillinger as an almost mythical figure, tracing the rise and fall of the Depression era's Public Enemy Number One as he takes on the banks and the G-men, led by the infamous Melvin Purvis. Starring Sam Peckinpah favourites Warren Oates and Ben Johnson as Dillinger and Purvis, and with a supporting cast including Harry Dean Stanton, Richard Dreyfuss and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas, Dillinger is a top drawer gangster picture: explosive, stylish and hugely entertaining. Ruth’s husband claims that he is still madly in love with her despite Ruth wanting a divorce and the affair. Ruth’s husband and lover seem to get along at first but, in this world, looks and introductions can be misleading. Ruth soon suffers two near fatal accidents that put her in a paranoid state and it doesn’t take long for her to suspect foul play. As the paranoia builds, Ruth’s mental state begins to fade. When Ruth inevitability finds out the truth behind the accidents she seems to give up, but this is a Giallo after all, and in “The Fox with a Velvet Tail” looks can be deceiving. “The Fox with a Velvet Tail” may be considered a tad talky and slow for typical Giallo fans, but Fox’s charm won’t go wasted on everyone due to its fairly subtle setups, payoffs, and eye candy. Fox is very good at setting up payoffs without hitting one over the head with them and delivering on those setups, the same. Some of the best setups come to fruition after the audience has forgotten about them. Whether it is Ruth’s pottery making abilities or a swan that was once a beautiful gift. The pottery paying off into the final twist with a simple note and whose hand writing is on it; the simple ingredients listed on the white paper double as a life sentence. The swan doubles as a great narrative reveal to take down the facade of a once thought to be good man. This character becomes malicious as he chases the terrified swan, a sadistic glee in his eyes, while his smile is appropriately hidden behind a mask he has chosen to wear for fun. When the mask comes down and he bares his teeth in a smile of delight at the torment of the swan, Ruth is not the only one who realizes there is more than one mask in the scene coming down. A particular tense scene is that of when the husband tests Paul by holding up a magazine for him to shoot at while he is target practicing. The husband hoping to reveal some bad intent holds the magazine close enough to his face for it to be alarming. When Paul aims the gun the film seems to stop as does the audience’s breath, everyone waits for Paul to take an opportunity at being the only man in Ruth’s life. Besides these well-crafted scenes, “The Fox with a Velvet Tail” manages to take advantage of a lovely location and good looking cast, showcasing both with nice camera work and shots. Setting the film in a sunny villa creates a nice offset against the characters' evil intentions and plot of murder. The opening of the film seems to have a romantic, dreamy quality as Paul and Ruth make out while Paul hangs from a tree, the sun setting in the background as their silhouettes intertwine. “The Fox with a Velvet Tail” isn’t anything groundbreaking but thanks to a sensual start with a great location, pretty people, and nice camera work this semi uneventful Giallo becomes a fairly solid entry in the genre. The mystery element and plot devices manage to intrigue the audience and keep the 1 hour and 40 minute runtime seem rather quick; some bare skin doesn’t hurt either. Mondo Macabro brings us a 4K scan of “The Fox with a Velvet Tail”. The film is presented in English and Italian with English subtitles. Also included is a commentary with Giallo expert Troy Howarth and a documentary with interviews from leading ladies of the Giallo entitled “So Sweet”. “The Fox with a Velvet Tail” blu-ray is a nice release and a solid entry in the Giallo/ Italian thriller genre and is a welcome addition to any collection. Plot Summary: This 1971 Italian/Spanish giallo is a hugely enjoyable and very stylish murder mystery set on the luxurious Côte d'Azur. Spanish director José María Forqué - who later made the controversial Beyond Erotica - brings together a talented and good looking cast, one of the best cinematographers of the day (Alejandro Ulloa) and a fantastic, lounge style score from Maestro Piccioni to create a twisty, and twisted, tale of deception and revenge. The director's long career at the more prestigious end of Spanish cinema and the presence of award winning scripter Rafael Azcona - who worked with many top European film makers - give the film an edge of sophistication alongside its enjoyably devious narrative. The film is like the smooth blue waters of the Mediterranean where it’s set. It looks inviting and seductive, the sun glistening off the gentle waves; but just beneath the surface, sharks are swimming, and they're hungry for prey... It brought to an end a seven-year and seven-film run of masterpieces that included the taboo-breaking ultra-violence of The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs, and the more elegiac tones of The Ballad of Cable Hogue and Junior Bonner. A love story that plays out in a brutal environment, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia sits somewhere between these moods and may just be Bloody Sam s greatest work, as well as his most autobiographical. Warren Oates plays Bennie, a piano player in a Mexican bar who gets himself involved in the manhunt for Alfredo Garcia, a man with a million-dollar price-tag on his head having impregnated the daughter of crime boss El Jefe (Emilio Fernández). Sensing an easy pay day, Bennie takes his girlfriend, Elita (Isela Vega) on a trip that ll prove fatalistic for many of those involved. During a career that was blighted by studio interference, Peckinpah would later say that Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia was the only which ended up exactly as he wanted: I did it exactly the way I wanted to. Good or bad, like it or not, that was my film. And it was. This is as close to Pure Peckinpah as it gets beautiful, violent, troubling, heartbreaking, astonishing. Jennifer (Jennifer Connelly) is transferred to an all girl’s school in Switzerland while her father, a famous actor, works abroad in the Philippines. Jennifer has a strange control over insects and begins to help a local entomologist (Donald Pleasence) with uncovering a series of brutal murders in the area. If this doesn't sound like an insane enough set up to make for memorable film already, there is more insanity to be had. “Phenomena” also features a Goblin/heavy metal score, sleepwalking, out of control camera work, an avenging chimp, repulsive imagery, and some out of this world twists that all smash together to create one of the most bizarre yet strangely familiar Argento films. It comes as a shock that the film is coherent at all. With all the madness, any Argento fan can still spot some strong Argento staples that are undeniably from his mind. The camera work harkens back to his previous film “Tenebre;” in particular, the complex dolly shot examining a home, top from bottom, before the occupants are brutally murdered. Right from the opening credits, the camera in “Phenomena” drifts into a group of tall pine trees, mingling with nature while the wind simultaneously ravages them. The wind elements helps make the hilly wilderness around become thick with creepy atmosphere. Not only does this opening look beautiful and haunting, but it sets up the wind as a presence in the film. The wind later comes into play during scenes when Jennifer uses her powers with insects or while the killer is stalking. This duality or correlation between the killer and our heroine is an interesting one. The American in an unfamiliar area is a reoccurring theme in Argento's films, recalling “The Bird With the Crystal Plumage” and “Inferno.” Add in an abusive school element, and we have a major similarity to the maestro’s most popular work, “Suspiria.” Another interesting comparison is the motivation of the killer in comparing it to previous films; a once attacked person becomes the attacker. The score is wonderful and fantastical, helping the film push its fantasy elements. The metal music, although more melodic than most, brings home the moments of horror. One of the oddest plot points of the film has got to be the involvement of the chimpanzee. The chimp plays a helper to Donald Pleasence and, later, an avenger of his; the whole subplot, although not the oddest part, seems absurd yet scary. The imagery of a primate with a straight razor is something nightmares are made of. The extreme factors are quite shocking, even for Argento, and more grisly and disturbing than any previous work of his. The nasty bits become most vile in the climax which involves a vat of decay/gore, which, of course, someone falls into. During this, a man breaks off his own finger to escape handcuffs and, to finish, a pair of killers, one being a mutated child. All these flashes of horror are again made the more horrifying because the surreal quality makes it feel more fantasy than nightmare, but it soon becomes the latter. Synapse has included three cuts of the film; a 116min cut, a 110min cut, and the truncated US cut entitled “Creepers” which clocks in at a brisk 82min. “Creepers” makes for a great way to revisit the film after being familiar enough with the other cuts, the gore is mostly intact, it’s just a tad inept. Also included on the set is the vintage documentary “Dario Argento's World of Horror.” The doc covers the flicks Argento has been involved with up until “Phenomena” and is packed with interviews and great behind the scene footage. Included in the footage is even a look into some of the more complex camera shots Argento uses. Synapse has done a good job in bringing “Phenomena” to Blu-ray in the US and added a couple nice surprises to the release. Plot Summary: The young Jennifer Corvino (played by Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly, in one of her first film roles) is sent to a private Swiss academy for girls where a vicious killer is on the loose, brutally murdering students. Jennifer is a “gifted” girl with the strange ability to communicate with insects, and Dr. McGregor (Donald Pleasence, John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN series, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK) enlists her to help locate the killer. Jennifer finds herself in a bizarre murder plot with maggots, mutants, and razor-wielding chimpanzee mayhem! Can she uncover the killer’s identity before becoming a victim herself? Daria Nicolodi (TENEBRAE) and Fiore Argento (DEMONS) also star in this strange, unique and gory film from Italy’s Master of Horror, Dario Argento. PHENOMENA also features fantastic soundtrack music from progressive-rock favorite Goblin, British Heavy Metal masters Motörhead & Iron Maiden, Andi Sex Gang, Bill Wyman and Simon Boswell! It’s abundant with horrific, repulsive yet beautifully crafted moments. Vita, a young religious girl, becomes the focus of an artist after he is hired by a priest to make a piece for the school. Vita is soon caught in a web of perverse dreams. These dreams involve the obsessed artist who seems to be able to transform himself into a giant spider. As this spider, he carries out rapes and other disturbing behavior against Vita. The effects and set design in the dream sequences are done almost to perfection. The spider seems to have good maneuverability without seeming overly mechanical, while the foggy set and decorations bring the whole scene together. The setting of the film soon changes for the better as Vita is sent to live with her Aunt and her family to an equally secluded and gorgeous area. Vita seems to be the object of desire for almost everyone she encounters, but she becomes enamored with her new cousin and the two begin a romantic friendship. Quickly the perverse dreams come back into her life and the story climaxes in a sauna where the priest and artist fight for her faith or virginity or both. Who knows? “Spider” is a wild film that needs to be seen to be understood; or not, for that matter. Due to its unsettling plot and pace, “Spider” is not always the most engaging film; but for what it lacks in some departments, it makes up for with its visual flair and its subjectively provocative ideas. Included on the disc is an interview with the director Vasili Mass and a behind the scenes look at the film. The interview is an interesting look into Latvia filmmaking and their politics of the film industry. Mondo Macabro has once again set out to do what it does and show the audience the wild side of cinema. Plot Summary: Vita, a beautiful teenage girl, is asked by a controversial artist to pose as the Virgin Mary for a painting. She visits his studio and finds herself swept up into the bizarre world of the artist and his bohemian friends. She seems to see his paintings come to life and is pursued by strange shadowy figures. Later she has nightmarish visions of the artist visiting her at night in the form of a huge spider. The next morning she finds marks on her body that look like the bites of a large insect. Vita’s mother becomes worried about her and sends the girl off to stay with relatives in the countryside, believing that the change of environment will help her to recover. However, it seems the dark forces that threatened Vita in the city have followed her and an ancient evil is being awakened that feeds off Vita’s burgeoning sexuality. This Latvian shot, Russian language film was produced in the post Glasnost years of the former Soviet Union, when the barriers were down and previously unacceptable material was being explored for the first time. This is one of the very few sex-horror films to come out of that period and still stands today as a daring and unique production, packed with elaborate and astonishing visual sequences of morbid eroticism.
