The new disc is loaded with features and interviews with greats like Dario Argento. Made in the dying days of Italian genre cinema, this gothic and gory imaginative film doesn’t disappoint. A child named Sonia witnesses the brutal murder of her parents in Paris in 1900. Twelve years later Sonia moves to Italy and begins working in a wax museum. Strange disappearances are plaguing the town causing a reporter and police detective who worked Sonia’s parents’ murders to shift their focus on the curator of the museum. Does this strange curator have a dark past? Are the wax figures more than just recreations of violent scenes? “The Wax Mask” has a debatably a more interesting behind the scenes story than the one that takes place in the film. Originally the film was supposed to be the first Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento collaboration, to bury bad blood. Unfortunately tragedy struck when Fulci died in pre-production leaving the film somewhat tarnished. Special Effects artist Sergio Stivaletti stepped up to the plate and directed. “The Wax Mask” doesn't quite stand up to a lot of the previous Argento directed or produced features, but it does stand up to most certainty anything horror that came out in the same year, 1997. “The Wax Mask has a fairly obvious story, being based off previous wax figure horrors such “House of Wax” but the film thrives in its gothic style, splatter effects, and mad scientist tropes. The wax sets look great, featuring scenes from mythological stories like Medusa and from real crime scenes such as the murders of Jack the Ripper. The camera work is also solidly done by regular Fulci collaborator, Sergio Salvati. The opening shot mixes CGI with practical and, although a tad strange looking, it ends up being a nice tracking shot which reveals a brutal murder. The movie also features some really imaginative kills including one where a character must face his self. “The Wax Mask” sports everything you would enjoy in an Italian horror. Unfairly compared to previous efforts, this is somewhat of a nice gem that feels both like a product of its time and of yesteryear. Severin Films knocked this release out of the park in the features department. Included on the disc is a wonderful featurette entitled “Beyond Fulci”. In this doc Stivaletti, Argento, Giuseppe Columbo, and more remember the maestro and his final days. This is a very touching and interesting featurette and the highlight of the entire release. Also included on the disc is a commentary by Sergio Stivaletti and a series of other featurettes and interviews which include the composer Maurizio Abeni, actress, Gabriella Giorgell, and film writer Alan Jones. Plot Summary: In the mid-‘90s, Dario Argento approached a physically and professionally ailing Lucio Fulci to direct one final production, an over-the-top shocker about grisly murders at a Paris wax museum. But when Fulci passed away only weeks before filming began, Argento turned to Sergio Stivaletti – the FX genius on PHENOMENA, OPERA, DEMONS and CEMETARY MAN – to make his feature-directing debut. Original Grand Guignol director/performer Robert Hossein (RIFFIFI) and Aldo Massasso (CONTRABAND) star in what DVD Drive-In hails as “Old-timey luridness married to state-of-the-art gore.” From a screenplay co-written by Fulci with cinematography by Sergio Salvati (ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND), and now featuring a 4k scan from the original negative supervised by Stivaletti. Packed with Special Features that include rare behind-the-scenes footage, all-new interviews and more! Aging blonde-bombshell Anita Ekberg (La Dolce Vita, Pick-up Alley) gives a full-bodied performance as a sex-crazed sister with some seriously bad habits in the lurid cult classic Killer Nun. One of the most notorious 'nunsploitation' films, Killer Nun tells the sordid story of Sister Gertrude, a disturbed woman of the cloth who degenerates into a perverse mire of drug taking, sexual perversion, sadistic torture and murder. Joe Dallesandro (The Climber, Flesh for Frankenstein), Alida Valli (The Possessed, Suspiria) and the ample Paola Morra (Behind Convent Walls) offer spirited performances and able support to Ekberg, in this shocking tale based on real events. Boasting an incongruously classy score by legendary composer Alessandro Alessandroni (Women's Camp 119) and stylishly rendered scenes of sex and murder, Killer Nun takes the viewer on hair-raising journey from the heights of religious ecstasy to the depths of devilish degeneracy. The wines created by Dr. Elson Po have been known for decades as among the finest in the world, but unknown to the public, Po has been using his vintning and chemistry skills as a front for a much more sinister purpose; harvesting fresh blood from his youthful victims to produce an elixir designed to keep him young forever. Unfortunately, his special potion seems to be weakening in its strength and Po finds himself in need of fresh bodies. Deciding to use his connections to the film industry, he presents himself as a potential film investor and invites a group of attractive young actors and models to his secluded island mansion, with the intent of harvesting their life sustaining properties. When they arrive, Po becomes convinced that statuesque beauty, Jezebel, might be the ideal candidate from which more elixir can be created and sends his henchmen out with the task of violently killing off her friends. It's hazing season at Phi Up and the boys are up to all sorts of nasty pranks on their hapless pledges, in between regular bouts of 'wetting their whistles' at the campus watering hole…with some of the area's beautiful sorority babes. But this is going to be one literal 'hell week' as they unwittingly unleash the spirit of Acid Sid; an unfortunate pledge who was accidentally dissolved in acid during a hazing prank gone wrong some 20 years earlier. As the helpless fratboys and pledges fall victim to Sid's wrath and seemingly indestructible towering zombie corpse, it's up to the stragglers to figure out how to kill someone who's been dead for two decades, or die trying. A truly one-of-a-kind blending of post-Animal House T&A sex comedy and gore filled supernatural slasher, Paul Ziller's PLEDGE NIGHT unloads a nearly non-stop barrage of weirdness on the viewer. From the jaw dropping, all-based-on-actual-practices, hazing rituals, as meticulously researched by writer/producer Joyce Synder (Raw Talent), to the slimy and often 'explosive' gore, from effects wizard Dean Kartalas, along with a soundtrack performed by Anthrax, whose singer, Joey Belladonna makes a memorable onscreen appearance, PLEDGE NIGHT serves up a non-stop ride of horror and weirdness guaranteed to keep you glued to the screen, mouth agape. The second film directed by Herb Freed (Graduation Day), BEYOND EVIL is a gothic inspired supernatural horror film, taking liberal inspiration from the castle-set Italian chillers of the 60s, but with a healthy dose of early 80s sleaze, including creative kills and outrageous optical effects. A diamond in the rough of early 80s Euro-horror, then 72 year old filmmaker Ignacio F. Iquino's (directing as Steve McCoy) SECTA SINIESTRA, or, Bloody Sect, barely saw any kind of release outside of its native Spain, despite liberally 'borrowing' plot elements from Rosemary's Baby, with touches of The Exorcist. Brimming over with every key element of Eurosleaze, including surprisingly mean spirited and brutal killings, Satanic possession, loads of nudity, zoom-happy cinematography, absurd plot twists and a pounding score, SECTA SINIESTRA is long overdue to join the ranks of the craziest offerings from Bruno Mattei or Joe D'Amato. Hopefully, the bells and whistles help bring some more attention to this classic black horror comedy. Walter Paisley is a lowly dullard working as a busboy at an art gallery coffee shop. Walter is intrigued by a woman and the art scene, wanting nothing more than her affection and to escape the shame of his job. When Walter accidently kills a cat, he covers it in clay and presents it as a work of art. To his surprise, the clay cat is a hit. Walter let’s his new found fame go to his head and sets his eyes on bigger projects. “A Bucket of Blood” has a rare starring performance by legendary character actor Dick Miller. Dick Miller has a magic way of making himself likable no matter what. In this film he is a moronic killer who becomes somewhat of an ego maniac, yet the way Miller plays into Walter’s simplistic nature and his lack of understanding make him sympathetic and endearing. Many actors would have trouble portraying this sort of dimension. The name Walter Paisley should not go unrecognized; this wouldn’t be the last time Dick Miller donned the name of Walter Paisley or a bastardization of it. For nearly his entire career, Dick would often pop up in films as bit roles credited as Walt, Walter, or Walter Paisley. The film’s script is smart and clever; it pokes fun at the art scene filling it with hopeless burnouts, pretentious poets, greedy art dealers, and oblivious buyers all while moving the story along. These odd characters get moments to shine, especially the stellar poet whose whimsical poems tend to drive Walter to further art crimes. “A Bucket of Blood” seems responsible for so many future horror films that incorporate murder into the artwork or the art somehow being a murdered victim. Some of these films seem to take a lot like HG Lewis’s gore film “Color Me Blood Red” and a memorable episode from the HBO series “Tales From the Crypt entitled “Easel Kill Ya”. There are also smaller inspirations as well where films seem to be just merely touched by it. “Kolobos” is one that comes to mind, where the killer turns drawings of murder into reality and even the work of Dario Argento where killers are inspired by artwork such as “The Bird with the Crystal Plumage”. The similarities to 1954’s “House of Wax”, which came out half a decade earlier, didn’t go unnoticed either; especially in Germany where they shot an extended prologue to tie the two films together. “A Bucket of Blood” is funny, zany, and ahead of its time. It sports good performances especially from Dick Miller who shines in his tragic circumstances and is well worth revisiting. Olive Films has included a nice chunk of features including an interview with director Roger Corman, an interview with Miller and his wife Lainie Miller, a new commentary by Elijah Drenner, The German prologue with subtitles, and more. Description: With A Bucket of Blood, the multi-talented Roger Corman singlehandedly created his own genre hyphenate: the black-comedy-beatnik-culture-horror film. Dick Miller (Gremlins, The Trip) stars as Walter, a busboy at the hep-cat hangout the Yellow Door Café who dreams of artistic greatness. Inspired by the scribes and artists who surround him, Walter is introduced to the world of sculpture quite literally by accident – thanks to thin walls and a sharp steak knife. From his very first sculpture – the aptly titled “Dead Cat” – Walter is hailed a genius by the art snob set, a wunderkind who, unbeknownst to his doting devotees, has raised murder to the level of high art. But when the tortured artist turns his creativity towards the human form, he’s sure to make their blood run cold. Rounding out the cast are Barboura Morris (The Trip, The Haunted Palace) as Carla, the woman of Walter’s dreams; Bert Convy (Semi-Tough) as undercover cop Lou Raby; Antony Carbone (Pit and the Pendulum) as Leonard, owner of the Yellow Door; and Julian Burton (The Masque of the Red Death) as Maxwell, the Yellow Door’s resident poet-philosopher. A Bucket of Blood is written by Charles B. Griffith (Death Race 2000), photographed by Jacques R. Marquette (Burnt Offerings), edited by Anthony Carras (The Comedy of Terrors), with music by Fred Katz (The Little Shop of Horrors), and art direction by Dan Haller (Pit and the Pendulum). Now he roams the woods in search of his next human prey. Their paranormal explorations lead them to an abandoned mansion in a desolate area that natives call the "Valley of Fear" where years of drinking chemically tainted water have lead to a genetically damaged population and mutant wildlife. Sculptor Franco Serpieri (Lazenby) welcomes Roberta (Nicoletta Elmi, Deep Red) - his young daughter from a failed marriage - to Venice, unaware that a disturbed child-killer is stalking the city's canals. When Roberta's body is found floating face-down in the river, the lives of Franco and his estranged wife Elizabeth (Anita Strindberg, The Case of the Scorpion's Tail) are ripped asunder. Desperate for vengeance, Franco turns detective in a bid to track down his daughter's killer, and in the process unearths shocking evidence of depravity and corruption which implicates some of the most respected figures in Venetian society. Darlin’ is a direct sequel to Lucky McKee's The Woman. Darlin’ is the third in the film series based on a book series written by Jack Ketchum but is the first of the films to not have a book counterpart. The star of the film series, Pollyanna McIntosh, who plays the woman, fills in double duty and makes her directorial debut with Darlin’. The Woman and her newly adopted daughter Darlin’ stumble out of the wilderness in worse shape than usual. Darlin’ is left at a hospital and, with no means to communicate, is taken to a home for young women ran by the church that owns the hospital. The school is ran by a bishop who has a plan to keep the school afloat by using Darlin’ as an example of someone who has “The devil inside” and has had it expunged. To the bishop’s dismay, Darlin not only has the “devil” inside of her, but something else. Darlin’ carries on a lot of the themes of The Woman with the so called civilized people of the world trying to bring civility to the savages. Darlin’ takes the religious angle and shows its perversion and corruption bringing up the question maybe it’s best to stay savage. The themes are interesting and thought provoking. In a world of horror films that attempt to ridicule the Catholic Church, there are a fair share of ones that fail. They seem to come across cheesy or uneducated about the subject. Although the film has its moments of absurdity and insanity, it never comes across inept. The only time the film seems to reach a little bit is when we understand that the bishop is not only corrupt by the idea of money, but that of a sexual nature as well. The sexual nature could be argued that it ties in with the lust of money/power and is also used for a nice reveal in the storyline, so this plot point can be forgiven or possibility rectified. The focus of the church controlling the hospital is a nice angle, it feels a little unexplored in other films and Darlin’ takes advantage of it for a few scenes. Hospitals, churches, and schools are all great location to set a horror film; here we have all three. The film’s absurdity comes across in some of its situations using the scary and violent Woman to bring across some situational and well needed humor. The Woman interacting with a group of homeless people or riding in a car all make for funny or interesting scenes. The homeless characters bring a sense of weirdness to the movie and sort of bring up a feeling of a Voltaire Candide approach where we follow this character in meeting all sorts of strange people. While The Woman is having these interactions and bonding with the homeless, Darlin’ is forming her relationships with the other girls of the school. While separated from each other, they are creating their own family units to replace the ones they lost. The girls all struggle with their problems from previous lives and new problems brought on by the bishop and some of the nuns. Most of the girls have unique quirks which add to the entertainment and interest level of the film. The filmmaking is solid all around; it’s shot well and has a nice choice of soundtrack and music cues. The special effects are decent and kills are satisfactory. As for the acting from the leads, it’s very good. Lauryn Canny who plays Darlin’ has a very complex role where she has to learn to be civilized again while still carrying over some of that violence and survival instinct that has been deeply embedded or brought out in her. The Woman is used more for comedy than in previous installments, but works by being a great danger and a place of comic relief. The homeless characters in the film also fill these roles, but, more the latter. The supporting cast hold their weight quite well, The Bishop (Bryan Batt) carries the right demeanor and look, while Nurse Tony (Cooper Andrews) and the haunted Sister Jennifer (Nora-Jane Noone) bring in nice storylines and make for compelling characters. When the big reveal happens at the end all the snippets of flashback come together and we are given a nice allegory and a look into Darlin’s understanding and a warning how people can be manipulated by faith. Darlin’ is an entertaining film that takes a look at organized religion, family, corruption, and savagery. It’s a good continuation, albeit not as poignant as the previous entry, but is most definitely worth checking out. Dark Sky Films has included a making of, commentary with the director, and some deleted scenes for supplements. Product Description: Found at a Catholic hospital filthy and ferocious, feral teenager Darlin’ is whisked off to a care home run by The Bishop and his obedient nuns where she is to be tamed into a “good girl” as an example of the miracle of the church. However, Darlin’ holds a secret darker than the “sins” she is threatened with, and she is not traveling alone. The Woman, equally fierce and feral, who raised her is ever present and is determined to come for her no matter who tries to step in her way. Continuing the twistedly vicious adventure of Lucky McKee’s cult hit The Woman, DARLIN’ sees standout star Pollyanna McIntosh both in front of and behind the camera, expertly commanding an all-consuming feast on the senses and sensibility in equal measure.
