Mysterious accidents begin to happen involving an elevator at a high rise. An elevator mechanic is dispatched to find the problem and soon realizes the issue is far deeper than a faulty elevator. With the help of a reporter, the mechanic must go face to face with a violent killing machine and the science that created it. “The Lift” plays itself fairly straight for its premise. The film could have been a long lost Stephen King short story. It feels like it came right out of “The Night Shift Collection” and would feel comfortable sharing the same space as “The Mangler”. There is no doubt that Dick Maas knows this is pure insanity and by incorporating the right level of seriousness into the dramatic moments, it works fairly well. “The Lift” has a sense of playfulness through long moments of dialogue. By doing this the film adds some visual flair to otherwise typical moments and makes each scene have a tiny story arc. In a breakfast scene, the mechanic and his wife are locked in conversation as their son dumps something into his father’s drink. Unknowingly to the son the father has noticed everything and at the last minute switches the beverage. The death scenes in the film are as expected; heads in doors and people dropping from the elevator shaft. They are fun and work but there just aren’t enough of them, with the film tending to drag at moments as a result. Strange enough, there are plenty of characters with screen time who could have met their final fate in the feature. Most of these characters seem to have only two motives, to get drunk and cheat on their spouses. Besides the slight comic tone they bring, they serve very little purpose. A solid synth score brings some life to the film and fits well. “The Lift” looks and sounds good. Included on the disc are a commentary and a short film by the director. The short film packs quite an emotional punch and is a welcomed difference. For its dedication to the ridiculous “The Lift” remains a curio worth seeking out. Plot Summary: A New Kind Of Horror Lurks In The Shadows Of The Lift… There is something very wrong with the elevator in a stylish office high-rise. The passengers never end up on the floor of their choice. They end up dead! When Felix, an inquisitive repairman, investigates the faulty deathtrap, he discovers that something other than malfunctioning machinery is to blame. Some dark, distorted power has gained control of the elevator for its own evil design. After his horrifying discovery is given the shaft by the authorities, he joins a nosy female journalist to battle the unholy force inside THE LIFT! Huub Stapel (AMSTERDAMNED) and Willeke van Ammelrooy (ANTONIA’S LINE) star in this chilling cult classic from Writer/Director Dick Maas (SAINT), who also composed the score and later helmed the 2001 English-language remake, DOWN (aka THE SHAFT). Long unavailable on U.S. home video, Blue Underground now proudly presents THE LIFT in a brand-new 2K restoration from the original negative, approved by Dick Maas! Special Features: - Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Dick Maas and Editor Hans van Dongen - Going Up – Interview with Star Huub Stapel - “Long Distance” – Short Film by Dick Maas (2003, 4 Mins.) - Dutch Trailer - U.S. Trailer - Poster & Still Gallery - BONUS Collectable Booklet with new essay by writer and filmmaker Chris Alexander Blue Underground Website - http://www.blue-underground.com/ Buy Blu-Ray/DVD Combo - https://grindhousevideo.com/products/lift-limited-edition-blu-raydvd “Down” [Blu-Ray/DVD] Combo (Blue Underground)![]() Written by MrParka Blue Underground brings 2001's “Down” to Blu-ray, a remake of 1983's “Lift.” Released a week before the tragic 911 terrorist attacks, “Down” suffered due to its similarities to the tragedy and was destined to be underseen. Thanks to Blue Underground, Dick Maas’s big budget killer elevator flick gets a second chance. An elevator mechanic (James Marshall) begins to think that a string of accidents in the state of the art Millennium Building are not only related but much more sinister. With the help of a reporter (Naomi Watts,) our blue collar hero digs deeper into the deaths. Every step of the way his friends and coworkers threaten him and demand he stops. As the bodies and accidents begin to accumulate, an obvious cover up unfolds. The bureaucratic systems in place leave it to the unlikely pair to save the day and uncover the truth. Bigger and better than its predecessor, “Down” is an increase in budget, story, and acting talent. Sporting elaborate set designs, sharp camera work, and over top death scenes, it manages to be an entertaining and well-made film that should have had more exposure. One of the more memorable death scenes features a skater who is sucked into the elevator and then is sky rocketed to the 40 some floor and spit out with such force, he smashes through the plate glass window. This sort of elaboration doesn’t stop with the deaths, the camera work is something to admire as well. Within the first 10 minutes of the film, the camera glides through the air and seamlessly transitions into a balcony scene. The balcony is a set on ground level and not actually towering over New York as the film portrays. The soundtrack features Aerosmith, which probably cost more to license then the entire budget of the first film, “The Lift”. Besides the two leads, “Down” is peppered with beloved character actors including Dan Hedaya, Ron Perlman, Michael Ironside, and Edward Herrman. It’s a welcomed surprise to see these talented actors share a scene or two together. “Down” includes a commentary and a 2 hour and 30 minutes behind the scenes. The behind the scenes give some great insight on the hard work put into the sets and great camera setups. “Down” looks and sounds great and is presented in its proper aspect ratio for the first time in the states. For fans of WTF cinema, it’s a ride worth taking. Plot Summary: You May Want to Take the Stairs… When the express elevators in New York City’s 102-story Millennium Building start to malfunction, elevator mechanics Mark (James Marshall of TWIN PEAKS) and Jeff (Eric Thal of THE PUPPET MASTERS) are sent to find the cause. After a series of gruesome and deadly “accidents” occur, Mark joins forces with spunky reporter Jennifer (Naomi Watts of THE RING), who’s on the hunt for a juicy story. As the death toll rises and the building is sealed off amid claims of terrorism, Mark and Jennifer attempt to unravel the horrifying secret behind the mysterious behavior of the bloodthirsty lift before it takes them – and the entire city – DOWN! Michael Ironside (SCANNERS), Edward Herrmann (THE LOST BOYS), Dan Hedaya (COMMANDO), and Ron Perlman (HELLBOY) co-star in this big-budget remake of THE LIFT helmed by original Writer/Director Dick Maas (AMSTERDAMNED). Previously released on home video in a cropped full-frame transfer as THE SHAFT, Blue Underground is now proud to present DOWN in a brand-new widescreen 2K restoration from the original negative, approved by Dick Maas! Presented in hi-def for the first time ever and widely available for the first time in over a decade, the 50s inspired slasher is sure to please fans of zany 90s horror. A group of film students decide to throw on an all-night B-movie horrorathon to raise money. The students are incorporating the theater gimmicks of the 50s to entice the audience. The gimmicks soon backfire when a killer who appears to be a long thought dead film cult leader starts using the gimmicks to pick off the alumni. Popcorn is a much tamer film than one might expect, relying on laughs and it’s love for the 50s B-movies instead of gratuitous nudity and gore. The highlight of the film is the faux films within the film. Included are the hilarious giant insect nuclear scare flick “Mosquito” and the sympathetic monster movie “The Attack of the Amazing Electrified Man”. The later sporting a wonderful performance by character actor Bruce Glover. As for the rest of the film, it’s a bit uneasy. The softer side of popcorn is light hearted scenes with the students interacting in what seems like a television program for the WB. While the zany side is a slasher with some strange surreal subplot of a supposedly burned to death film cult leader and his transgressive last film haunting our lead. The dream sequences in which our lead suffers are filled with abundant fog and solid imagery. The lost film, itself, features a cheesy performance from a mysterious Manson character that bleeds into the dreams. The cast is solid, highlights being Jill Schoelen and Tom Villard. Jill manages to come across as semi believable, even when the script has lapses of reason which likely are due to a troubled production. Villard gets to perform a wide variety of emotions and comes across sympathetic at times, not unlike the electrocuted man. This sympathy isn’t the only thing Tom brings, he’s manic, weird, and unapproachable at times. This duality in the character is a solid effort on the film's behalf and Tom Villard’s acting. Dee Wallace comes across good, as usual, trying to hide secrets from and protect her niece. Although the kills aren’t massively gory they are highly inventive, especially when a prop mosquito used to scare the audience is used on its operator. Lastly one cannot mention popcorn without talking about the strange soundtrack. Being shot on location in Jamaica, the music and locals bleed into the film. This strange blend creates a strange atmosphere of 50s Americana style theater recreation done in the 90s with a reggae attitude. The Blu-ray from Synapse has included a beefy making of with a slew of interviews, an interview with Bruce Glover, and a commentary with cast and crew. The participants are open about the involvement of Alan Orsmby and Bob Clark, and the troubled shoot. It’s nice to see Popcorn finally get the recognition it deserves. Even if the movie isn’t perfect, it’s an interesting and unique film and sure to please a good amount of horror fans who love the zany and weird. Plot Summary: What could be scarier than an all-night "Horrorthon"? A group of film students finds out when they stage just such an event at an abandoned movie palace. In addition to the three features MOSQUITO, THE ATTACK OF THE AMAZING ELECTRIFIED MAN and THE STENCH, they decide to screen a bizarre short called THE POSSESSOR, whose creator, Lanyard Gates, killed his family and set the theater on fire after its first showing. Maggie (Jill Schoelen, THE STEPFATHER) has been having frightening dreams that seem to be connected to THE POSSESSOR, and as the festival proceeds, the nightmare comes true for her and her friends as they are stalked and slain by a mysterious killer. Has Gates survived to continue THE POSSESSOR's deadly legacy? A loving homage to 50s/ 60s B-movies (the trio of flicks shown at the Horrorthon all have accompanying William Castle-style gimmicks), POPCORN is also an insanely fun horror/comedy in its own right. Pseudonymously written by Alan Ormsby (CAT PEOPLE, DEATHDREAM), who directed the films-within-the-film, it celebrates the joys of old-fashioned creature features and 80s-style stalk-and-slay, with a great cast additionally including Dee Wallace (THE HOWLING), Tony Roberts (AMITYVILLE 3-D), Ray Walston (THE STAND), Malcolm Danare (CHRISTINE) and Kelly Jo Minter (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5). At the forefront was Sergio Martino (The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, Torso), whose sensual 70s thrillers starring Edwige Fenech and George Hilton are widely celebrated as some of the best the genre has to offer. The final of Martino's six gialli, The Suspicious Death of a Minor combines conventional giallo trappings with elements of the then flourishing 'poliziotteschi' crime thrillers. Claudio Cassinelli (What Have They Done to Your Daughters?) stars as undercover cop Paolo Germi, on the trail of a Milanese criminal outfit following the brutal murder of an underage prostitute. But a killer-for-hire is also on the prowl, bumping off witnesses before they have a chance to talk... Also starring Mel Ferrer (Nightmare City), Barbara Magnolfi (Suspiria) and Jenny Tamburi (The Psychic), and featuring a script by veteran giallo writer Ernesto Gastaldi (All the Colors of the Dark, Death Walks at Midnight), this unique and lesser-known entry in Martino's filmography serves as an essential link between two different movements in Italian popular cinema. Family man Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) is looking forward to a week of putting his feet up at home in the quiet, leafy cul-de-sac of Mayfield Place. Starting out, the three shows I will be producing and recording a month are Late Night Rentals, Late Night Features, and Don't Bend The Page. Late Night Rentals will be a weekly podcast on all of the cult movies I, and my wife Sherriah, enjoy and want to share with you. As well as discovering new ones we've never seen and reviewing them as well. These reviews range from as far back as the 1930's (sheesh... such a time existed?), all the way to current day and eventually... The future! Late Night Features will be short write-ups on specific subjects revolving around movies. These episodes will consist of "Top" Lists and will be released periodically throughout each month. Don't Bend The Page will be brief, short reviews on books and comics that I find enjoyable and feel are worth your time to read and will be released periodically throughout each month. So come hunker in my bunker (that sounds exactly as I mean it), and partake with me the joys and displeasures of good books, dazzling comics, and magnificent movies! For fans of the film, there are two versions of the fairly inept and out of focus opus to choose from. The first being the French version in HD, “Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties,” and the second being the Spanish version in standard definition entitled “Ópalo de fuego: Mercaderes del sexo”. The plot of “Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties” is a doozy. Two prostitutes are forced to spy on a rich couple who are kidnapping famous woman and turning them into sex slaves for the elite. The pair of prostitutes is aided by a flamboyant homosexual (depending on which version) and a group of cave dwelling hippies. Jess Franco is hands down one of the most prolific directors of Euro-cinema. Jess has directed hundreds of features and never lets a budget or lack of quality stop him from completing a film. See “The Castle of Fu Manchu” if proof is needed. This particular film has so many out of focus camera shots that when Stephen Thrower suggests in the special features supplement that it’s on purpose, there isn’t much ground to deny it. This isn’t the only problem with “Two Female Spies,” the dubbing is atrocious even if it ends up being hilarious. A highlight is with a pair of guards, when they talk about bumming matches in such ridiculous ways, it’s hard to gain your composure afterword. The film's tone and plot points jump around similar to the two mostly naked leads. At times, the film is a spy farce with a warped sense of humor. The comedy is so warped that our homosexual character is raped by one of the female leads and it’s all played for laughs!? If you aren’t shaken or confused by that, maybe the haphazard put together political thriller aspect will do it, or most certainty the graphic torture rape scenes will!? One thing the film does manage to do right is a large action set piece involving a helicopter chase and one of the spies. The desert landscape in this scene and the machine gun bullet ricochets that chase our lead seem professional even if the professionalism doesn’t bleed into the next one. By the end of the film, one can only shake their head in dismay at the switches from night to day shots within mere seconds. As the film wraps up and the viewer wakes up, they may wonder if the titillation was worth the duration. Depending on which version of the film you chose to watch, the changes are drastic and characters, plot points, and tones are different though they do manage to use a huge bulk of the same footage. Included on the disc is a great interview with Stephen Thrower and one with the late Jess Franco. Also included are a series of bloopers. “Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties” isn’t necessarily a winner, but the release is jam packed with features and some may find it enjoyable. At the end of the whole ordeal, Jess Franco may get a few guilt ridden laughs with his film and even some surprise arousals to the viewer’s dismay, but it sure won’t go down in anyone’s top movie lists. Plot Summary: In this long-unseen shocker from "one of filmdom's most provocative creators" (The A.V. Club), the legendary Jess Franco (VAMPYROS LESBOS) pushes the limits of psycho-insanity like never before: Lina Romay(BARBED WIRE DOLLS) and Lynn Monteil (of Jean Rollin's ZOMBIE LAKE and Franco's SADOMANIA) star as a pair strippers released from prison to work undercover for the U.S. government. What follows is a deranged mélange of audacious international politics that will leave even the most obsessive Franco fanatics slack-jawed in astonishment. Olivier Mathot (CANNIBAL TERROR), Joëlle Le Quément (WOMEN BEHIND BARS) and Claude Boisson (DEVIL HUNTER) co-star in this Euro-rarity, now restored uncut in HD and loaded with exclusive Bonus Materials from the Franco archives.
