Among the most highly acclaimed of these, 1973's Torso revels in the genre's time-honored traditions while simultaneously laying the groundwork for the modern slasher movie. A sex maniac is prowling the streets of Perugia, targeting picturesque university town's female students. Alarmed at plummeting life expectancy of the student body, Jane (Suzy Kendall, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) and her three friends elope to a secluded country villa - only to discover that, far from having left the terror behind, they've brought it with them! Also known as Carnal Violence, Torso was released in Italy towards the end of the giallo boom before enjoying a second life on the American grindhouse circuit. Co-starring Tina Aumont (Salon Kitty) and Luc Merenda (The Violent Professionals), the film finds its director at the top of his game, delivering copious levels of violence, sleaze and one of the tensest cat-and-mouse games ever committed to celluloid! Following the commercial and critical success of The Fisher King, Terry Gilliam next feature would turn to science fiction and a screenplay by Janet and David Peoples (Blade Runner, Unforgiven) inspired by Chris Marker's classic short film La Jetée. In 1996, a deadly virus is unleashed by a group calling themselves the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, destroying much of the world's population and forcing survivors underground. In 2035, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis, Die Hard) is chosen to go back in time and help scientists in their search for a cure. Featuring an Oscar-nominated turn by Brad Pitt (Fight Club) as mental patient Jeffrey Goines, Twelve Monkeys would become Gilliam's most successful film and is now widely regarded as a sci-fi classic. A geologist (Cambridge) unwittingly brings home an unusual frozen piece of debris from the North Pole. But when it accidentally thaws, the hungrier-than-ever Blob comes to life again, consuming nearly everyone in its path and terrorizing the town. No one is safe as it crawls into a bowling alley, oozes its way across an ice rink, becoming grotesquely bloated with the blood of its victims… can this bizarre creature ever be stopped? Video Reviews"Deadbeat at Dawn" Blu-Ray Review (Arrow Video)![]() Jim VanBebber's notorious, blood-drenched cult classic Deadbeat at Dawn rises again on the advent of its 30th anniversary, newly restored for the first time on Blu-ray. Locked and loaded with a raft of new extras, see Deadbeat as you've never seen it before - in all its head-busting, bone-crushing glory! Written by, directed by and starring VanBebber, Deadbeat follows the story of Goose - a gang leader whose girlfriend is brutally slaughtered when he attempts to leave the thug life behind. Pulled back into the gang, who've now formed an uneasy alliance with the thugs that butchered his girl, Goose sees an opportunity to exact his brutal, deadly revenge. The very definition of DIY, independent filmmaking (VanBebber quit film school after his first year and used his student loan to fund the movie), Deadbeat at Dawn surpasses its low-budget origins to create a revenge movie that delivers more thrills and bloody spills than all of Chuck Norris' films combined. Here the boyish freshman's ambition is to become the world's greatest artist, like his hero Picasso. Unfortunately, the beauty and craft of Jerome's portraiture are not appreciated in an anything-goes art class. Neither his harsh judgments of his classmates' efforts nor his later attempts to create pseudo-art of his own win him any admirers. But Jerome does attract the attentions of his dream girl, the stunning and sophisticated Audrey (Sophia Myles, Transformers: Age of Extinction), an artist's model and daughter of a celebrated artist. Rejecting the affectations of the local art scene, Audrey is drawn to Jerome's sincerity. When Audrey shifts her attention to Jonah (Matt Keeslar, Scream 3), a hunky painter who becomes the school's latest art star, Jerome is heartbroken. Desperate, he concocts a risky plan to make a name for himself and win her back. From Terry Zwigoff, the director of Ghost World and Bad Santa, Art School Confidential features a stellar supporting cast that includes John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire), Ethan Suplee (Mallrats), Joel David Moore (Avatar), Angelica Huston (The Addams Family), Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge!), Nick Swardson (Grandma's Boy), Adam Scott (Step Brothers) and Scoot McNairy (Argo) in a movie that's "enjoyable and reprises the same dyspeptic attitude that infused Ghost World" (The Washington Post). The 1956 classic is loaded with features and looks great. Don Siegel's paranoia classic finally gets the treatment it deserves. When Dr. Miles J. Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) returns home after an extended leave something is amiss; townsfolk are claiming that family members aren't who they appear to be. Miles, along with his love interest Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) and another couple, discovers a lifeless body that resembles someone of their party. The worried quartet decides to investigate, but it's already too late. To their horror they discover the town has been taken over by an out of this world foe that offers a scarier fate than death and, to make matters worse, the enemy attacks while you sleep. Besides being a well-crafted and terrifying film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” does something that many of its contemporaries don't, it provokes thought. At times “Invasion” has been used as an allegory to Communism or McCarthyism, but the film isn’t focused on the ideology. It’s focused on the idea of conformity against ones will. It’s truly a scary idea to go to sleep one night and lose one’s identity; not just for a period of time but for all eternity. The film casts a hopeless feeling, a nightmare in the truest sense. Your friends, your family; they aren’t who they appear. There is nowhere to go and the idea of being taken over in your most private and peaceful time is stomach churning. The waking nightmare the characters are forced to endure becomes even more twisted as their psyche slips and their will fades. The two leads are wonderful as a pair of interested parties with a history; both coming from broken marriages. Throughout the film Kevin McCarthy’s pleasant and charming demeanor is changed into a blubbering madman helping the terror set in for the audience. Dana Wynter isn’t just good looks, but a strong female force that runs and fights back when need be. The modest budget didn’t stop some top notch special effects from being created. The scene where the survivors come across the pods that are beginning to take their form still works to this day and has inspired dozens of films. ”Invasion of the Body Snatchers” nightmare state works due to the performances, setting, and story. It all comes together perfectly. The lack of sleeps helps the never ending paranoia of the characters and the only way out of the waking nightmare is, ironically, sleep which one will never wake from. Olive Films has included a slew of features, porting over some old stuff from previous editions and creating a couple new ones for this release. The new inclusions are an interview with Don Siegel's son, a commentary by film historian Richard Harland Smith, and a great interview with film directors Joe Dante and Larry Cohen. The old features include contributions from historians, cast, crew, and famous fans of the film, including directors John Landis and Stuart Gordon. The features dive into the production, the impact, and the key players involved, and paint an interesting story about the film including title changes and post versus pre-production. The film and features deliver the goods in this Olive Signature release. Description: “They’re already here! You’re next!” With these chilling words, Invasion of the Body Snatchers sounded a clarion call to the dangers of conformity, paranoia, and mass hysteria at the heart of 1950s American life. Considered one of the greatest science fiction films ever made, Invasion of the Body Snatchers stars Kevin McCarthy (Academy Award® nominee, Best Supporting Actor, Death of A Salesman – 1952) as Miles Bennell, a doctor in a small California town whose patients are becoming increasingly overwrought, accusing their loved ones of being emotionless imposters. They’re right! Plant-like aliens have invaded Earth, taking possession of humans as they sleep and replicating them in giant seed pods. Convinced that a catastrophic epidemic is imminent, Bennell, in a terrifying race for his life, must warn the world of this deadly invasion of the pod people before it’s too late. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, directed by the accomplished Don Siegel (Dirty Harry, The Shootist) and co-starring Dana Wynter (Airport), Carolyn Jones (A Hole in the Head), Larry Gates (The Sand Pebbles) and King Donovan (The Enforcer), was photographed by Academy Award nominee Ellsworth Fredericks (Best Cinematography, Sayonara – 1958) with production design by Academy Award winner Ted Haworth (Best Art Direction, Sayonara – 1958). His 1955 masterpiece Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji is an excellent entry point for the newcomer. Set during the Edo period, Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji is a tragicomic road movie of sorts, following a samurai, his two servants - including spear-carrier Genpachi (Chiezô Kataoka) - and the various people they meet on their journey, including a policeman in pursuit of a thief, a young child and a woman who is to be sold into prostitution. Question of the Week What Actor or Actress died before their time that you would have liked to see live a lot longer? Also name a filmmaker you would have loved to see them work with if they would have lived. Contest Time!"Cannibal Holocaust" An Extended Look: With Keith Voigt Jr.![]() Italy, 1979. Director: Ruggero Deodato. Robert Kerman, Carl Yorke, Francesca Ciardi, Luca Barbereschi, Salvatore Basile, Perry Pirkanen. 96 Mins. Banned and heavily censored throughout the world, here is a film that surpasses its reputation as a shotgun blast to the senses. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST presents the ‘found footage’ of four documentary filmmakers who experience brutal death at the hands of a savage South American tribe of flesh-eaters. The footage is so intense so graphic and so unflinching in its realism that the director and producer of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST were arrested on its original release and the film was seized. Predating THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT in its use of ‘found footage’, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST also served as a key inspiration for Eli Roth’s THE GREEN INFERNO. Grindhouse Releasing’s definitive version of Deodato’s masterwork is coming soon to Blu-ray with expanded bonus features. Not for the weak of stomach, the film’s horrifying power cannot be denied. Be forewarned: This is the one that goes ALL THE WAY! From writer/director John Landis, the mind behind The Blues Brothers and An American Werewolf in London, comes a love story that transcends the boundaries of nature and good taste - the one and only Schlock! Carnage! Terror! Banana skins! The mighty prehistoric ape Schlocktropus has emerged from hiding to embark on a full-scale rampage across a quiet Southern Californian suburb. The police are baffled. The army is powerless. The body count is rising. But when Schlocktropus encounters a kindly blind woman (Eliza Garrett, National Lampoon's Animal House) who sees beyond his grotesque visage, the homicidal simian is presented with a chance at redemption... Shot over twelve days on a micro-budget, Schlock launched the careers of both Landis and legendary effects makeup artist Rick Baker (Videodrome). An uproarious pastiche of monster movies, packed to the gills with irreverent humor and biting satire, Schlock serves as the outrageous missing link between the creature features of yesteryear and its creators' subsequent varied and celebrated careers. A horror film about a screenwriter who loses the ability to distinguish between his fantasy world and the real world, with disastrous consequences. As he ruminates on his place in any world and loses his grip, he also loses his wife and his children's respect, and critics tear him apart. The final undoing of this screenwriter is a deadline that must be met at all costs, costs that perhaps are too great. “Deadline” VHS – https://www.amazon.com/Deadline-Stephen-Young/dp/B000P998TA/ Pick a Movie "The Aftermath" DVD Review![]() "The Afterman" is about a guy who lived alone in an atomic fallout shelter after the A-Bomb was dropped, so he can't read, write or speak. 20 years later the shelter opens and he wanders into a barbaric world full of sex and depravity.
