Mondo Macabro has put in lots of care to bring this forgotten and underseen gem on Blu-ray. The film is familiar in all the best ways, yet different and refreshing in others. This underseen Spanish rarity is part psychological character study and part proto slasher with giallo elements. It's filled with psychosexual and gothic elements and a rich atmosphere. David Rocha stars as a Paul, the son of two gardeners who has been kicked out of surgical school for his fear of blood. Paul is not only a poor student but suffers with a dual personality and a troubled past. He sees beautiful woman as dolls and mannequins. Unable to control his twisted nature, he soon begins killing and performing surgeries on what he sees as dolls. Almost any film that came out after 1960 involving a damaged character seemed to take notes directly from “Psycho” with “The Killer of Dolls” being much the same, but there are a variety of differences. First we will get to the similarities; Paul has a troubled relationship with his mother similar to Norman Bates and also suffers from dual personality disorder. He sees himself as a dead woman figure from his family. Paul’s childlike quality is also similar to Norman’s as is his strange sexual desires and an unconventional portrayal of masculinity. Rocha was perfect for the role and gave both sides of the character interesting moments. These sorts of elements could put Paul as a sympathetic yet dangerous character but here the killer’s identity isn’t a mystery. We know who is carrying out the murders almost right away, so Paul isn’t necessary someone to pull for like Mr. Bates. The mystery in this film is within the backstory and the look into the character’s psyche and how it was formed. This approach makes for a hell of a character study, showing his sexual relationships, his mental break downs, and his fascination with dolls that all ties back into his childhood trauma. The giallo/gothic elements work well by placing Paul in a beautiful garden under the Countess and her absent husband’s rule. The duos are rich and classy on the exterior, but dirty and seedy on interior. This could be a reflection of the garden that Paul and his family work at, lovely flowers and greenery on the exterior, but murder and anguish in the interior. Any couple looking to score or experiment with drugs come into the garden at night only to fall victim to Paul and his delusional mind. Paul doesn’t see his victims as people; he sees them as dolls or mannequins, which is a direct result from his trauma and an outward expression for his hatred of woman as well as a possible coping mechanism for his violent actions. A lot of interesting concepts are left on the table to dive into and it makes for a vastly entertaining and twisted film. Kat Ellinger on the commentary calls it “One of a kind” and I would whole heartily agree with that assessment. The ingredients are all familiar, but the ways they are prepared and cooked make it a gem that stands by itself. Mondo Macabro has included a slew of extras on the Blu-Ray. Not only is there a great Kat Ellinger commentary, but one with Robert Monell and Rodney Barnett as well. To give more insight on the film is an interview with star David Rocha and Dr. Antonio Lázaro-Reboll, author of the book “The Spanish Horror Film”. Both of these features are great additions to the release, the latter being broken up in two parts. The first part of the documentary being a look into Spanish Horror in general and the second part, a focus on “The Killer of Dolls” by itself. Mondo Macabro has not only brought a forgotten gem to Blu-Ray for the first time, but they have included a nice array of features that make this one of the best releases of the year. Product Description In this bizarre and totally unique piece of Spanish horror, David Rocha plays Paul, a young man thrown out of medical school due to his inability to deal with the sight of blood. He goes home to Montpellier in France where his father is gardener on a huge estate belonging to Countess Olivia (played by Helga Liné, ageless diva of Spanish horror). We soon discover that fear of blood is not Paul’s only quirk He was raised as a girl after his sister died and likes to play with dolls, performing strange operations on them, attempting to extract their hearts. Meanwhile, in the park surrounding the Countesses’ home, a number of young girls have been found murdered. The killer seems to be a mysterious individual wearing a black wig, a white doll mask and speaking with a woman’s voice. As the killings multiply around him, Paul sinks ever deeper into a world of hallucination and nightmare. Released here for the first time ever on Blu-ray and in its US premier, The Killer of Dolls is an original and unforgettable film that will be treasured by all who like their horror weird and unsettling. But with their mother growing increasingly distant and erratic and a mysterious sickness taking hold, will any of the Dollanganger children survive to escape the clutches of the house's cruel matriarch? The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as "nine times more suspenseful" than its predecessor, was The Cat O' Nine Tails. When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arnò (Karl Malden, Patton, One-Eyed Jacks), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute's scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus, Beneath the Planet of the Apes) to crack the case. But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperilled in their search for the truth. And worse still, Lori (Cinzia De Carolis, Cannibal Apocalypse), Franco's young niece, may also be in the killer's sights... This second entry in the so-called "Animal Trilogy" found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (Il Sorpasso) and Rada Rassimov (Baron Blood), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), The Cat O' Nine Tails remains one of Argento's most suspenseful and underrated films. Who is the deranged maniac persecuting and mentally torturing celebrated rock musician Roberto Tobias (Michael Brandon)? First he’s implicated in a horrifying stabbing and is soon surrounded by other senseless slaughter. The last strange image captured on one murder victim’s eye retina contains the only clue to the demented criminal manipulator. And their identity will take Roberto over the edge of sanity to a shock horror peak in Dario Argento’s classic giallo chiller. This homicidal frenzy completed Argento’s revered ‘Animal’ trilogy (alongside THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and CAT O’ NINE TAILS) that dubbed him ‘The Italian Hitchcock’, leading to SUSPIRIA and his worldwide ‘Master of Horror’ reputation. And Argento’s unmistakable flair for creating fear in lavish style is on stunning show in this slick, sick primal scream – with a shattering slow-motion climax given further operatic violence by one of genius Ennio Morricone’s most memorable scores. So says the legend that drives The Phantom Carriage (Körkarlen), directed by the father of Swedish cinema, Victor Sjöström. The story, based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf, concerns an alcoholic, abusive ne’er-do-well (Sjöström himself) who is shown the error of his ways, and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. This extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic (which inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies) is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects. Part Faust story, part dream logic slasher, and part rock and roll haunted house nonsense, this one is sure to entertain. An all-girl rock band struggling to find music for their next hit gets a lost piece by Paganini, a famous composer. To their chagrin, the musical piece was traded for the ultimate price. While filming their latest music video the band becomes trapped in a mansion and must face a masked violin welding killer. The “Paganini Horror” is essentially a slasher film with a bonkers set up. The insanity of the film actually makes it all the more entertaining with weirdo events happening at every turn. Characters fall through floors, victims end up covered in weird boils, and some are even electrocuted from an invisible force field that keeps them trapped. Horror staples Donald Pleasance and Daria Nicolodi help add to the hysteria with over the top performances. Is there anything better than Donald Pleasance tossing money into the wind while referring to the cash as “little demons”? Well maybe the scene where the terrified music video director dramatically screams, “Oh my God!” could give it a run for its money. Any well-adjusted person will find it quite hard to keep a straight face. The special effects range in quality; they are cheap, but sometimes effective. Some of the stabbings probably suffer the most. The knife wounds are close ups of cheap latex with blood spewing out. The set design and location are also interesting enough and, along with the bright colors, are appealing to the eye. The score is solid and is likely to stick around in your head after the credits roll. Severin Films has included an interview with director Luigi Cozzi. Cozzi gives some nice insight on the production of the film and how it got off its feet. Including a great story about how at first he was to direct a biopic about Paganini starring Christopher Lambert. Severin Films has done a good job on a batshit Italian movie that should be watched with a group for maximum enjoyment. Plot Summary: From producer Fabrizio De Angelis (ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND, KILLER CROCODILE), writer/director Luigi Cozzi (CONTAMINATION, STARCRASH) and co-writer/star Daria Nicolodi (DEEP RED, TENEBRAE) comes one of the most hard-to-find shockers from Italian Horror’s greatest decade: When an all-girl rock band records an unpublished song by Niccolò Paganini – the 19th century composer said to have sold his soul to the Devil – they will unleash a skintight spandex nightmare of extreme violins, cheesy power ballads, SUSPIRIA-influenced lighting and outlandish Satanic havoc that QuietCool calls “serious fun…it drips with as much love as it does with blood and gore.” Jasmine Maimone (DEMONS), Pascal Perciano (VOICES FROM BEYOND) and the legendary Donald Pleasence co-star in this “kooky, stylish and definitely recommended flick” (DVDExotica.com), now transferred in 2k from the original negative. Ryouichi, a young boy, loses his sibling during the zombie apocalypse. Years down the road he has become an Undertaker. An Undertaker in this world is a man who goes into the wasteland and brings back body parts of zombies so that loved ones can have peace. Every time Ryouichi enters the wasteland for a mission he keeps his eyes open for his lost loved one so that he can finally get the peace he brings to others. Although “Undertaker” is short and to the point, it manages to take a few pages from George A. Romero. Director/Writer Naoyoshi Kawamatsu has a focus on the little humanity left in the zombies. Although dangerous, they seem tragic. This addition of sympathy for the zombies by the audience and from Ryouichi helps give him some depth. The special effects are excellent; each zombie seems to have a unique look and malformation to it, from water logged to crippled spines. The zombies are so grotesque that you hope Ryouichi doesn’t come to his end by one of them. The fight scenes are done well and intense enough to keep the audience engaged. The film approaches its end at a short runtime of 65 minutes; another hour would have been welcomed. The film has a deep mythology to it and has a lot to offer even if we only get a glimpse. Synapse Films has included a making of featurette as bonus material. The making of sheds some light on the key players and how much effort went into the film, from the fight choreographing to the directing and special effects. We also get a nice glimpse into the life of the director and how much he loves the genre. “Undertaker” is a great release from Synapse Films that let's zombie fans know when it comes to the undead some foreign territories are still putting out quality films. Plot Summary: Synapse Films presents UNDERTAKER - Director Naoyoshi Kawamatsu’s independent masterpiece, set in a horrific dystopian future. A deadly virus outbreak is turning the people of Japan into flesh-eating zombies. The government intervenes, trying to separate the survivors from the infected. Ryouichi, a young boy who has his family and friends destroyed by the undead infestation, becomes an assistant to an Undertaker… a person hired by families to kill loved ones who’ve been turned. Armed with a modified shovel and a bag, Ryouichi roams the ruins of Japan killing zombies and collecting body parts to prove to grieving families that their infected loved ones are now at peace. Director Naoyoshi Kawamatsu presents a moving story set in a horrific dystopian future with his independent masterpiece, UNDERTAKER. Producer Fabrizio De Angelis steps in to direct this Italian Jaws rip-off cheese fest. It’s loaded to the brim with entertaining action and carnage. “Killer Crocodile” is often ridiculous, but never boring. When a group of environmentalists lose a friend in the swamp while checking for radioactive material they report it to the local judge who claims foul play and suspects the environmentalists; although it’s quite evident the judge is hiding something. Soon enough, it’s uncovered that there is a giant croc responsible for the disappearance and death of their friend as well as the death of several locals. A swamp dwelling hunter reluctantly teams up with the group to stop the croc and the corruption. Italian staples Riz Ortolani, one of the finest composers, and F/X artists Gianetto De Rossi help bring this low budget creature feature to life with a nice jaws inspired score and solid special effects. The crocodile, although not very flexible, still has power to frighten with its massive size. The croc is most effective in the opening scene where a pair of fishermen meet their end when the croc explodes out of the darkness. Some unique camera angles add some spice to the film. A shot from inside the boat shows the angry reptile tower over its prey, mouth open and ready to feast, adding quite a bit of gusto to one of the attacks. “Killer Crocodile” is often hilarious due to the very typical pollution plot of the time and its overdramatic dubbing. Yet these negatives actually seem to help add a level of charm and entertainment without going to over the top. Included on the special edition release is also the sequel, “Killer Crocodile 2”. This time around, effects artist De Rossi steps into the role as director. “Killer Crocodile 2” is more of the same; when a reporter covers a story on the swamp she learns that the mayor has lied about cleaning up the radioactive material and wants the public to have access immediately. Talk about a Jaws rip-off, right? A second croc emerges and begins munching on locals. Soon enough the duo from the first film come to the rescue. The film is just as cheesy as the first and almost as fun. De Rossi seems to have included a little more gore this time around. Among the stand out scenes is one that is as barbaric as it is cheesy. When a group of nuns and school children are attacked and eaten, it’s hard to keep from chuckling. As disturbing as it sounds, the tone of the film really makes it feel like a comedy. The most ambitious scene involves the giant croc taking down an entire hut into the swamp. This scene is not only immensely effective, but works better than anything else in the film, especially the miniatures which are quite obviously that. The score seems to be a rehash by Riz and there isn’t much more to be mentioned differing from the first film. On the double disc release we are treated to a handful of interviews including one with Gianetto De Rossi, Anthony Crenna, Pietro Genuardi, and the DP Federico Del Zoppo. These interviews paint a great story of how the set of “Killer Crocodile” was often times scary and difficult. Included in the stories are a couple wild ones involving the death of a crew member and one insane story about forced drug use. On the bonus disc is a wonderful feature length about De Rossi entitled “The Prince Of Plasma: The Giannetto De Rossi Story”. The documentary covers De Rossi’s entire career and sports interviews with both film experts and the man, himself. It is truly a wonderful addition to the set. All and all Severin has done a good job with two vastly enjoyable films. Description More than a decade after the Spielberg blockbuster, a dream team of shock maestros – including producer-turned-director Fabrizio De Angelis (DR. BUTCHER M.D., EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS), screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti (BAY OF BLOOD, DEMONS), gore guru Giannetto De Rossi (ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND) and Oscar®-nominated composer Riz Ortolani (MONDO CANE, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST) – created one of the most ridiculously entertaining JAWS rip-offs in ItaloSleaze history: When a humongous crocodile begins chomping on a tropical island community, a group of idealistic young environmentalists will clash with a crusty redneck hunter to destroy the monster reptile spawned by toxic waste. Richard Anthony Crenna (ROSWELL), Sherrie Rose (DEMON KNIGHT), Ennio Girolami (GREAT WHITE) and Hollywood legend Van Johnson (THE CAINE MUTINY) star in this Crocsploitation classic now scanned in 2k from the original negative.
