Tverdovsky’s prize-winning sophomore feature (Special Prize of the Jury at Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Best Picture at Fantastic Fest) deftly mixes the deadpan humour of Aki Kaurismäki with a poignant examination of social issues including loneliness and aging. Natasha is a middle-aged admin employee at a zoo where her female co-workers take pleasure in making fun of her. She lives with her God-fearing mother and leads a dull existence without prospects, until one day she grows a tail. Medical examinations follow where she meets Peter, a young radiologist and her dreary life is turned upside down. The 70’s horror masterpiece is loaded with a slew of features and two commentaries. “Deathdream” sports amazing talent behind and in front of the camera. From academy award winners John Marley and Lynn Carlin as Andy’s parents, to special effects artists Tom Savini, and writer Alan Ormsby. This powerful psychological political horror masterpiece deserves to be seen by any self-respecting horror fan. “Deathdream” follows the story of a normal American middle class family whose only son Andy, dies in the Vietnam War. To their confusion and happiness, Andy returns home in the middle of the night soon after they receive the news. The happy family reunion turns sour when their beloved son seems unresponsive, strange, and violent. Along with the return of Andy, bodies begin showing up drained of blood. The happy family facade begins to crack when Andy’s family begins to lie to themselves, other family members, and the authorities. With these lies also come deep harbored feelings of resentment toward each other that eventually destroy this once “perfect” family. “Deathdream” is one of the most emotionally gripping horror films of the 70s. It’s a bold statement about Vietnam, drug abuse, family relations, and generation gaps. One can’t help but feel helpless and mercilessly beaten up after watching the film. The messages and social importance are even stronger than the horror elements. Our beloved and innocent sons are sent over to fight a war and, if they do manage to come back to Middle America, are transformed into metaphorical monsters. In “Deathdream” it’s a literal interpretation; Andy has become a monster. A vampire-zombie like creature that requires blood injected directly into him to survive, the blood doubling as an obvious drug metaphor. The interaction between Andy and a WW2 veteran shows the dramatic difference in warfare and the generational difference and opinions toward war. The WW2 vet recollects candidly about his war stories with Andy’s father while Andy stares blankly dead on the inside and out. The moments of horror are done mostly in a typical style, but the most powerful is the one involving the family dog and is done in a straight forward, matter of fact way. This scene is one of the most powerful scenes in the film only second fiddle to the macabre, nightmarish, and touching ending. Nothing can quite convey a mother’s love as poignantly as Lynn Carlin's final line does, “Some boys never come home.” Blue Underground, again, does a fantastic job bringing the classic to Blu-ray. For any fans of classic 70’s cinema, make sure to put “Deathdream” on the must see list. Like all true classic horror films it overcomes its budget and genre to become something special. Plot Summary: In this shattering variation on "The Monkey's Paw," grief-stricken suburban parents (Academy Award® nominees John Marley of THE GODFATHER and Lynn Carlin of FACES) refuse to accept the news that their son Andy (Richard Backus) has been killed in Vietnam. But when Andy returns home soon after, something may be horribly wrong: Andy is alive and well... or is he? Produced and directed by Bob Clark (BLACK CHRISTMAS) and written by Alan Ormsby (DERANGED), DEATHDREAM was one of the very first films to confront the domestic ravages of the Vietnam War. More than forty years later, it remains one of the most chilling horror films of all time. DEATHDREAM was released under several different titles, including DEAD OF NIGHT, THE NIGHT WALK and THE NIGHT ANDY CAME HOME, and marked the grisly debut of gore effects legend Tom Savini (DAWN OF THE DEAD). Blue Underground is proud to present this acclaimed zombie shocker in a new 2K restoration from the 35mm negative in its most complete version ever, along with original and brand-new Extras exclusive to this release! With a title like that one should know it’s going to get weird and that is exactly what it gets… real weird. “The Thingy” follows the life of a placenta that is born into a cruel world and must find his way without being eaten. The placenta is born to a single body building rage monster mother who names him Luke. Luke is traumatized when the family dog attacks him. This incident, along with a strange push of military focus from his mother and a lack of a father, causes Luke to become an introvert. Soon Luke’s life becomes more complicated by sexual awakenings and other high school problems. To make matters worse the poor placenta isn’t accepted by any of his peers and only has a pair of street bums and a creepy priest to talk to. “The Thingy” plays as part “Basket Case” sequel and part nasty, dark coming of age comedy. The humor relies on sight gags along with jet black humor. It’s hard to not feel a bit sorry for our disgusting mound of flesh that writhes from place to place when not using his small motorized car. The scenes where Luke is bullied are done effectively as well as grotesquely, as blood jets onto the bathroom stalls. The part of the mother is played by Pascal Maetens (a huge body building male) and is by far one of the weirdest characters in the film, one of her arms being covered with a prosthetic appliance to look as if she has only trained one part of her body. At times it’s impossible to determine if the film is trying to make you laugh, cry, or even both. When Luke goes on a date and buys his crush a necklace with a dead goldfish on it and proclaims “you have to name it, even if it’s dead,” one can sense a bit of what kind of mixed up world this whole ordeal takes place in. When the soul crushing ending finally happens, our sympathy for Luke is put to the maximum test. “The Thingy: Confessions of a Teenage Placenta” starts off as what might appear to be a zany gross out comedy, but really ends up being a dark somewhat challenging coming of age drama about a misfit. “The Thingy” contains a few typical Troma extras, 10 minutes of deleted scenes, and some behind the scenes with the making of Luke creature. For fans of oddball cinema that enjoy feeling equally tickled and tormented, “The Thingy” is worth looking into. Plot Summary: In a twisted world, Marianne gives birth to a rather unusual child. While the child is born dead, life finds its way through the afterbirth. Marianne decides to raise her placenta as a normal human being; as a young man named Luke. Behind his monstrous facade, there reveals a person of intelligence, faith and sensitivity. Luke struggles for his place in a world of drunks, junkies, whores and bodybuilders. An insane world that treats him as a freak. As this hostile society pushes him towards the edge, Luke has to choose between holding on to his gentle ideals or becoming the merciless soldier his mother always wanted him to be. Following the breakout success of his debut feature Night of the Living Dead, the director would embark upon a series of projects which demonstrate a master filmmaker with more than mere gut-munching on his mind. In There's Always Vanilla, young drifter Chris and beautiful model Lynn embark upon a tumultuous relationship which seems doomed from the outset. Season of the Witch (released theatrically as Hungry Wives) follows the exploits of Joan Mitchell - a housewife who seeks to escape the confines of her humdrum suburban existence through a flirtation with witchcraft. Lastly, The Crazies sees Romero returning to firmer horror territory as a small rural town finds itself in the grip of an infection which send its hosts into a violent, homicidal frenzy. So bad it’s good? So weird it’s interesting? So earnest it’s endearing or tolerable? A recently released criminal decides to try and rob an ex-lover's rich boss with her help. The duo becomes trapped inside the sadistic millionaire's booby trapped castle and must solve a series of puzzles in order to survive. “Beyond the Seventh Door” can be admired for its ambition and morality lesson. Besides that it may be enjoyed by someone who appreciates earnest bad movies. A foreign director and lead actor, who don’t completely understand English, result in awkward and painful dialogue. These types of films have seemingly been celebrated as of late. The lapses in reason from some of the characters and the way some scenes play out can certainly cause brain rotting. Is deciding to have sex in a pit that can fill with freezing water a good idea? The saving grace of the film is the top notch low budget traps made on a shoe string budget. The sets are made to be seemingly interactive and knowing they were all shot in a basement of a water plant helps appreciate it. The end lesson of greed and crime doesn’t pay is a timeless one and works in the film. This plays best during the climax where our hero has a hard choice between money and safety. The disc includes a commentary with the director BD Benedikt and Actor Lazar Rockwood, moderated by Paul Corupe from Canuxploitation. Also included are interviews with the two mentioned and a featurette about Ben Kerr, a famous eccentric Canadian. “Beyond the Seventh Door” will gain some genuine fans that garner inspiration from it; it will also gain an army of snarky hipsters who think it is ironic to say they love it. InterVision does a great job with an oddball title that some will adore and others will abhor. It’s insane satanic panic, melting monsters, and amazing cast are in HD for the first time ever. Jonathan Corbis (Ernest Borgnine) is the powerful leader of a devil worshiping cult. Corbis and his cult turn nonbelievers into wax vessels of evil that do their bidding. The Preston family, whose lineage ties in with Corbis’s, must stop him and his cult from their evil mission. Pretty soon only one Preston remains and it's up to them to protect a sacred book and unleash the Devil’s Rain. The only way to do this is to destroy a strange hidden container holding thousands of souls. “The Devil’s Rain” takes no time to get started, immediately we are in a world of chaos. The first 30 minutes follow Mark Preston (William Shatner) who is tossed in a nightmarish scenario fighting for his family’s lives. Before Mark can stop the cult, he is abducted and converted to Satanism, his face now featureless and eyes blackened and bulged like his evil brethren. Soon enough Mark's brother, Tom (Tom Skerritt), comes looking for his family. Along with Tom is his ESP powered wife. The ESP subplot only serves to cut the run time down by giving glimpses of the past and fleshing out the backstory. The ineptness of this addition is baffling and silly. The desert ghost town setting sets up a sense of isolation and utter horror and helps let the dread set in. Tom and his wife soon encounter the cult and are attempting to figure out what has happened. Before the climax, some entertaining action takes place including chase scenes and a few cult members getting shot into gooey messes with a shotgun. Due to some quick hypothesizing by Tom’s colleague (Eddie Albert) and some flashbacks via ESP, the story starts to make some sense. By that time, of course, it’s time for this gooey, glorious mess to end in style. The finality is sure to please gore hounds and special effects enthusiasts as people melt into wax puddles. The highlight of the film is Ernest Borgnine in his satanic garb and ram horns. Nobody quite plays a satanic cult leader like Borgnine can, chewing the scenery in demented glee, his eyes wide and smile huge. “The Devil’s Rain” doesn’t take the time to make much sense but it works as a vastly entertaining nightmare with gooey effects, a tongue in cheek attitude, and a fun cast. Severin Films has included a nice slew of extras including new interviews with cast, crew, and with members of The Church of Satan. Also included is the ported commentary from the Dark Sky DVD. Per usual, Severin adds another impressive release to their catalog. Plot Summary: Take an all-star cast including William Shatner, Ernest Borgnine, Eddie Albert, Keenan Wynn, Tom Skerritt, Ida Lupino and even John Travolta in his movie debut at their most hellishly over-the- top. Add one of the most visually inventive filmmakers of the era director Robert Fuest, of THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES fame and thrust them into an insane tale of rural occult carnage, featuring Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey as Technical Advisor. Watch in infernal awe as it all hurtles towards the most eye-popping, flesh-melting finale in grindhouse history. Jessica is a beautiful girl madly in love and obsessed with her sexually dominate and abusive boyfriend, Johnny. Dr. Simpson is a distracted, workaholic surgeon who would rather visit prostitutes than his wife. When Johnny suddenly dies in an accident, Jessica blames Dr. Simpson who failed to save his life. Jessica decides to take the doctor hostage. After Jessica has Dr. Simpson in captivity, her dark, suppressed, sexual desires come to light. Dr. Simpson, however, is no angel and shares a few similarities to Johnny when it comes to warped sexuality and his sexual appetite. As Jessica becomes more sexually dominate over Dr. Simpson and he becomes more submissive, she recalls memories with her boyfriend, the good, bad, and perverse. The versatile Fulci was never one to shy away from a different genre or extremity and the latter is here in spades. “The Devil’s Honey” features some of the strangest and most bothersome sex scenes in the maestro’s catalog. Included among the stranger scenes is an orgasm by saxophone and a Ménage à trois in a theater. Along with the overwhelming sex scenes, “The Devil’s Honey” manages to pack an emotional punch. The film brings sympathy to the characters, even if they aren’t decent human beings. The film is able to achieve this by how the circumstances play out and its look into the sexual psychological. Jessica is abused throughout the beginning of the film by her boyfriend but when he dies, we feel sorry for her. So when Jessica decides to get revenge it’s a complex emotional feeling for her and the audience. Dr. Simpson was distracted, but Johnny was awful. This death is catalyst for a sexual awakening in Jessica. This complexity makes it seem real. The whole ordeal, if it weren't so perverse, would be rather sad. As for the character of Dr. Simpson, we seem to get the idea that he almost can't help himself. He seems to live in a sad and lonely world. Simpson’s sexual transgressions are the reason for his failing marriage, the reason he is chained to a wall, and the reason for his downfall. The poem featured in the film that Dr. Simpson recalls works as a great closing and a reminder. The reminder being that some people will choose their sexual transgressions over happiness, over safety, and even over their life. The film's score is a powerful classy and jazzy one, which tries its best to cancel out some of the sleaze and add to the dreamy quality. Severin Films has included a nice plethora of features including interviews with Brett Halsey, Corinne Cléry, Producer Vincenzo Salviani, and Composer Claudio Natili. Also included are segments with horror authors/experts Stephen Thrower and Troy Howarth. Severin has done a great service in putting the care into an obscure Lucio Fulci filmed that deserved to be seen. Plot Summary: In perhaps his most rarely seen film, Godfather Of Gore Lucio Fulci takes on the erotic thriller genre and unleashes the ultimate onslaught of glossy depravity: Brett Halsey (DEMONIA, THE RETURN OF THE FLY), Corinne Cléry (THE STORY OF O, MOONRAKER) and Blanca Marsillach star in this insane saga complete with a jaw-dropping cavalcade of kink that Beyond Terror: The Films of Lucio Fulci calls "Demented and hot...good sleazy fun and perhaps Fulci's last truly enjoyable film." Adapted from the novella by Joseph Roth, the film tells the story of Andreas Kartack, a homeless man living under the bridges of Paris. Lent 200 francs by an anonymous stranger, he is determined to pay back his debt but circumstances - and his alcoholism - forever intervene. Working with professional actors for the first time in more than 20 years, Olmi cast Ruger Hauer as Andreas and was rewarded with an astonishing performance of subtlety and depth. Hauer is joined by a superb supporting cast, including Anthony Quayle (Lawrence of Arabia), Sandrine Dumas (The Double Life of Veronique) and Dominique Pinon (Delicatessen). "Ride the High Country" is his 2nd.* Plot Summary: This restoration of Sam Peckinpah's 1965 western Major Dundee is nothing short of magnificent, a noble attempt at restoring a famously wrecked masterpiece. When Peckinpah went over budget and over schedule during the Mexico shoot, unshot scenes were canceled and the footage rudely cut by the studio. The director disowned the results. In 2005, surviving footage was patched back in, and a new musical soundtrack commissioned to replace the score Peckinpah hated. This raises some legitimate questions about interpreting a director's intentions, and about messing with film history, but MAJOR DUNDEE--The Extended Version is such a rousing, mysterious experience, one feels grateful. Major Dundee (Charlton Heston) is a vainglorious officer busted to the decidedly inglorious job of overseeing prisoners in a fort in New Mexico. An abduction gives him the excuse to mount an expedition into Mexico, chasing the perpetrators and perhaps a shot at greatness. His ragtag posse includes Confederate POWs, notably one Captain Ben Tyreen (Richard Harris), whose intense former friendship with Dundee is tainted with a sense of betrayal on both sides. (Heston and Harris, two actors not known for subtlety, are splendid.) Part Ahab, part Alexander the Great, Dundee leads the expedition away from its purpose and into a near-mythic kind of wandering. Peckinpah gets everything right--the landscapes, the sneaky humor, the code of men. He also takes time to distinguish the supporting characters, such as Jim Hutton's awkward young officer and Senta Berger's stranded widow. The Peckinpah stock company of amazing character actors is in place, too, including James Coburn, Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, L.Q. Jones, and Slim Pickens. It will never be exactly what Peckinpah envisioned, but now MAJOR DUNDEE rides suspiciously close to greatness.
