Before acclaimed filmmaker Penelope Spheeris moved onto the comedy genre, she directed this violent 80’s thriller. “Boys Next Door” follows a pair of young men, Bo (Charlie Sheen) and Roy (Maxwell Caulfield), who start a streak of violence after their graduation. It’s up to a pair of cops to track the duo down and put an end to it. The film opens up in a chilling fashion showing the faces of infamous serial killers, complete with interview quotes and trivia. Although not completely fitting for the film, it sure grabs the audience’s attention. The title of the film plays on the overused phrase people spew when they find out someone they were familiar with happens to be a serial killer. However, these two characters wouldn’t be considered serial killers in the truest sense, but more so spree killers. The title is not lost on the audience. Bo and Roy are losers; they come from families that don’t seem to care nor support them and lack the ambition and drive to move on to their future factory job. They aren’t content with their lives and while this may be a common starting point for the coming of age genre, this film decides to go in a much darker route. The pair is dressed in clothes that look like they are from the 50’s while their peers are dressed in the latest fashions. We have two drastic personalities; Bo is concerned with getting laid and typically comes across as desperate, chauvinistic, and a bit simple. Roy is the truly dangerous one, he’s filled with misogynistic rage and psychotic tendencies brought on by being a closeted homosexual. It’s worth mentioning that the catalyst for their road trip and inevitable spree is something petty on the surface. They are kicked out of a graduation party thrown by their more better off classmates, but it’s not just that to Bo and Roy. It’s the final straw in solidifying their alienation from their age group and other social classes. At times “Boys Next Door” feels like a statement on the youth, a statement on classism, and a statement on repressed homosexuality. Sometimes it just feels like exploitation. The filmmakers really have a wonderful eye for lighting, the locations are lit beautifully. With most of the film taking place at night, it’s never over lit or too dark. The colors are in abundance and the locations are captured perfectly making the film a nice time piece. “Boys Next Door” is one of the great, sleazy Los Angeles movies to rival the New York works of Lustig and Henenlotter. The soundtrack is perfect; the music fits with the scenes and the drama, reflecting the time. When some of the more grueling scenes take place, they are filmed in a dreamlike, yet realistic fashion that makes one feel every impact of violence. The acting from everyone involved is top notch. The several small characters with weird quirks and remarks help the could-be-slow moments and make them memorable. The two leads have great chemistry together and although they are despicable, the ending is impactful and tragic due to their performances and the writing. “Boys Next Door” is an excellent movie with great acting, filmmaking, and writing. Luckily Severin Films has loaded this Blu-Ray to the brim with features. Included on the release is an audio commentary with Director Penelope Spheeris and Actor Maxwell Caulfield. An awesome interview with Stephen Thrower who goes into depth about the impact this film had on him. Also included is a side by side Interview with Christopher McDonald and Maxwell Caulfield together. This feature is a treat to see two old friends talk about the film and remember the experience. All and all Severin Films has done a great job with this underrated film. Plot Summary: This is the moment ‘80s teen movies turned “harrowing” (Unobtanium13.com), “frightening” (FilmFracture.com) and “all too real” (CoolAssCinema.com). Maxwell Caulfield and Chariie Sheen star as high-school outcasts who head to Los Angeles for a spree of petty crime, senseless violence and savage murder, “that will stick in your head for a long time” (The-Unknown-Movies.com). Patti D’Arbanville (BILITIS) and Christopher McDonald (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) co-star in this “Descent into Hell” (BirthMoviesDeath.com) featuring music by Iggy Pop, Tex & The Horseheads and The Cramps, scanned in 4k from the original negative. RoboCop, from Orion Pictures, marked director Paul Verhoeven's (Flesh + Blood) Hollywood debut and instantly became an enduring sci-fi/action classic when it landed in theaters in the summer of 1987. Verhoeven's peerlessly exciting and kinetic visuals were matched by a sharp script, iconic cast and exceptional special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing) and Phil Tippett (The Empire Strikes Back). The film takes place in Detroit in the not-too-distant future. Heroic cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai) is gunned down in the line of duty, only to be resurrected as RoboCop - a cybernetic mix of spare human parts and Motor City steel, and the latest defense against crime designed by the all-powerful OCP Corporation. As RoboCop's memories of his former life as Murphy resurface, only his ex-partner (Nancy Allen, Dressed To Kill) stands beside him to fight against the vicious thugs responsible for his death, as well as a nefarious top-level OCP executive orchestrating the chaos from above. Mann's film tells of Jeff Webster (Stewart) and his sidekick Ben Tatum (Walter Brennen, My Darling Clementine): two stoic adventurers driving cattle to market from Wyoming to Canada who come to logger heads with a corrupt judge (John McIntire, Psycho) and his henchmen. Ruth Romain (Strangers on a Train) plays a sultry saloon keeper who falls for Stewart, teaming up with him to take on the errant lawman. An epic saga set during the heady times of the Klondike Gold Rush, The Far Country captures the scenic grandeur of northern Canada's icy glaciers and snow-swept mountains in vivid Technicolor. Themes include something for every kink including rape fantasy (nothing quite like a scene opening with a forceful undressing and the film company's logo proudly popping up right in the center of the screen as it occurs) to a cowboy wearing assless chaps while shagging away (yeehaw!) and interracial pool boy fun. Vintage hardcore fans will love the 32nd volume of 42ND STREET FOREVER: THE PEEP SHOW COLLECTION. Picture quality varies depending on the condition that the reels have survived in but scratching, dirt and debris are common and rampant. I wouldn't feel good about myself watching a sparkling clean version of these loops and since they were shot in 8mm they wouldn't look particularly sharp anyways. That said, the picture is actually quite decent in terms of colors and clarity. The DVD's static menu gives us two options- Play All and Select A Loop, there are no extras. Synopsis from Back of DVD: Their place in history is undeniable. Hardcore 8mm stag films introduced explicit human sexuality to the public. Predating every other moving picture home format, these inauspicious productions provide not only a window to a whole other world, but also immediate relief for those not fortunate enough to make their fantasies into reality. Thousands of these underground movies were made between the 1960s and 1980s,and sold in the back of sex magazines or distributed to the almost 60,000 private "peep show booths located in adult stores in most major cities. Impulse Pictures is proud to present 42ND STREET FOREVER: THE PEEP SHOW COLLECTION VOL 32,a new, continuing series of salacious 8mm shorts,re-mastered from original film prints. This collection features fifteen classic "loops" with titles like "Sunrise Service", "Lick Me Clean", "Shower Head" and more. Watch for adult film stars Linda Shaw, Susan Nero, Veri Knotty, and Arcadia Lake, and a slew of unknowns in these raunchy rarities. https://synapse-films.com/category/impulse-pictures/ https://synapse-films.com/dvds/42nd-street-forever-the-peep-show-collection-vol-32-dvd/ Links www.youtube.com/mrparka https://www.instagram.com/mrparka/ https://twitter.com/mrparka00 http://www.screamingtoilet.com/dvd--blu-ray https://www.facebook.com/screamingpotty/ https://www.facebook.com/mrparka http://shutupbrandon.podbean.com/ https://www.facebook.com/screamingpotty/ https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/shut-up-brandon-podcast/id988229934?mt=2 https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podbean-70/shut-up-brandon-podcast https://letterboxd.com/mrparka/ https://www.patreon.com/mrparka Time Stamps “Slaughterhouse Slumber Party” Kick Starter and Changes to YouTube– 0:15 “Byleth” Review– 2:04 “Werewolf in a Girls’ Dormitory” Review – 6:05 “Hitch Hike to Hell” Review –12:38 “Man of a Thousand Faces” Review – 19:50 “Plaguers” Review – 25:34 “The Thing” Review – 30:55 “The Spirit Gallery” Review – 37:06 Flashback “Amerikan Holocaust” Review – 43:18 “Scarecrow County” Review– 51:45 Hammer Time “Quatermass and the Pit” Review w Jeremy – 58:55 Pick a Movie – 1:19:40 Questions – 1:20:24 Answers “Favorite Fuck Used in a Film?” – 1:24:00 Question of the Week “Favorite Zombie Film Made Between Night and Dawn?” 1:34:00 Update – 1:34:34 Patreon Shout Outs – 1:38:17 Dustin Mills “Slaughterhouse Slumber Party” Interview – 1:38:55 “Slaughterhouse Slumber Party” KickStarter – https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/shsptour/slaughterhouse-slumber-party-on-tour?ref=3jeanm&token=f4220efb&fbclid=IwAR0NTHRwyZqplq83zSaC59o_a7Uasa32mrx_M89qCX4j1rzbiEIbDg0maCI Dustin Mills Patreon – https://www.patreon.com/Dwmills/posts Video Review"Byleth" Blu-Ray Review (Severin Films)![]() Written by MrParka Severin Films brings “Byleth” the 1972 Italian Shocker to Blu-Ray. Not only is this the Blu-Ray debut of “Byleth” in the states, but the home video debut as well. When Lionello returns after a long trip, he is excited to finally reunite with his sister, Barbara. However, his excitement is soon turned to disappointment when he finds out Barbara has recently married the charming Giordano. Lionello begins to act strangely, becoming angry and withdrawn. With his change of character, he becomes a suspect in a series of murders that have taken place in the surrounding town. All the victims have three small puncture wounds on their neck. Before long, all signs point to demonic possession by none other than Byleth, a demon of incest! “Byleth” mixes giallo, gothic, and possession subgenres into a period piece sleazoid flick. Much of the violence is pretty standard for the time; although fairly graphic it never does anything that other contemporary Italian horror films didn’t. The sleaze on the other hand is pretty abundant with full frontal appearing numerous times. Add in the element of incest in a high class family and we have a classic gothic story. What sets this even further apart is of course the possession, which makes for some interesting imagery where the demon Byleth is seen riding through mirrors on a white horse, dressed in dark cloaks. All and all “Byleth” is a little curio that is fast paced and delivers on what it promises. Severin Films has done a good job remastering the film and has included it in German and Italian audio with subtitles. Plot Summary: In one of the most bizarre EuroSleaze sickies of the ‘70s, Mark Damon (HOUSE OF USHER, CRYPT OF THE LIVING DEAD) delivers an atypically unhinged performance as a duke consumed by unnatural lust for his beautiful sister (Claudia Gravy of THE NUN & THE DEVIL). Toss in depraved dollops of sex, voyeurism, demonic possession and giallo-style violence, and you get the sumptuous-yet-insane rarity The Wild Eye calls “intriguingly different and endearingly odd for Italian Horror aficionados.” Aldo Bufi Landi (FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET) and Fernando Cerulli (DEATH SMILES ON A MURDER) co-star in this long-lost filth-fest, directed by Spaghetti Western veteran Leopoldo Savona (PISTOL PACKIN’ PREACHER, APOCALYPSE JOE) and now scanned in 2k from negative elements recently discovered in a Madrid lab vault. Severin Films – https://severin-films.com/ “Byleth” Blu-Ray – https://severin-films.com/shop/byleth-blu/ "Werewolf in a Girls' Dormitory" Blu-Ray Review (Severin Films)![]() Written by MrParka Severin Films brings the early werewolf shocker “Werewolf in a Girls’ Dormitory” to Blu-Ray stateside. One of the only werewolf flicks from Italy, it’s no surprise Severin has cleaned up this black and white cheapie and given it some much needed love. A disbarred doctor shows up to teach at a girl’s reform school the same night that a young girl is killed on the grounds by a blood thirsty werewolf. The obvious signs point to our troubled newcomer, but other shady and seedy acts on the grounds suggest the werewolf could be one of many lurid suspects. Predating the Giallo boom, the mystery elements in the film would often be compared to Krimis, the German predecessor to the Giallo. Much of the film’s short runtime deals with the sleazy practices of the school’s staff, including a husband and wife who both teach there. The husband has an appetite for young girls, but even with his infidelity and perversity he may not necessarily be the werewolf. We jump back and forth between a few of the characters trying to uncover the truth until the final climax and all is revealed. “Werewolf in a Girls’ Dormitory” isn’t brimming with explicit content as some might expect for an Italian horror film. It relies on mystery, characters, and its story. All are solid and portrayed by some pretty faces as well as some familiar yet not so pretty faces such as Luciano Pigozzi, who plays the school’s groundskeeper. The creature design isn’t hidden to the end like many traditional monster flicks, but is shown fairly early on. Thankfully, it’s a solid lycanthrope. The film does have its corny moments but it manages to unfold nicely and makes for an entertaining watch. Included on the Severin’s release is a great commentary with David Del Valle and actor Curt Lowens. The two dive into the movie as well as the career of Mr. Lowens. David Del Valle is very good at getting the actor to open up about his career and participation in the film. Also included on the disc is an interview with screen writing legend Ernesto Gastaldi. All and all Severin has done a solid job in putting this little seen title on Blu-Ray. Plot Summary: Twisted Italian horror meets lurid German krimi in the 1961 EuroShocker fIlled with “genuinely eerie scenes and rather graphic maulings” (DVD Drive-In), now restored like you’ve never seen or heard it before: When an all-girl reform school is rocked by a series of grisly murders, it will unleash a nightmare of sexual corruption and lupine depravity. Carl Schell (THE BLUE MAX), Barbara Lass (aka Roman Polanski’s first wife Barbara Kwiatkowska) and Luciano Pigozzi (CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD) star in this infamous Italian/Austrian co-production – originally titled LYCANTHROPUS – directed by Paolo Heusch (THE DAY THE SKY EXPLODED) from a screenplay by giallo maestro Ernesto Gastaldi (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK) with a classic score by Armando Trovajoli (STRANGE SHADOWS IN AN EMPTY ROOM), newly scanned in 2k from archival elements recently discovered in a Rome lab vault. All roads lead to terror in Hitch Hike to Hell, the delightfully sleazy cautionary tale from cult director Irvin Berwick (Malibu High, The Monster of Piedras Blancas). Howard is a mild-mannered momma's boy whose job running deliveries for a cleaning agency affords him a lot of time out on the road. It's not until he picks up young women who've run away from home that he transforms into a twitching, homicidal maniac, hellbent on meting out punishment for their "transgressions". Can the cops put a stop to Howard's demented spree before he claims yet another victim? In early horror classics such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of The Opera, Lon Chaney captivated audiences with his vivid personifications of grotesque and afflicted characters. His extraordinary make-up skills, and miraculous ability to completely transform into grisly yet sympathetic and tragic monsters, garnered him international acclaim and the famous moniker of this film's title. Yet, despite his talent and success, Chaney led a life plagued by hardship and heartache. This insightful film-portrait traces the trajectory of the actor's career: from impoverished vaudeville clown to Hollywood stardom, whilst also capturing the drama that surrounded his private life. Joe Begos takes a dive into the L.A. art scene with his hypnotic, blood spattered, drug fueled vision. Dezzy (Dora Madison) is a struggling artist with a former drug problem. During an artistic dry spell she decides to dive back into the world of drugs to finish a commission piece. After a crazy night of drugs, sex, art, and blood she develops a crippling addiction. At first glance people might think how cliché, a struggling artist story, but hold your judgements. “Bliss” isn’t a lazy, haphazard attempt at a film, it’s full of life and dangerous, manic energy. Dora Madison is phenomenal as the lead; she doesn’t hold anything back, her delivery is dead on whether it be long winded drug rants or the fits of rage and violence she lets take control of her body. Visually it's the best looking horror film to come out this year. Being shot on 16mm, the film has a grainy texture that recalls a grittier time in filmmaking. The lighting is perfect with tons of colors and trippy visuals that amplify the drug induced manias. When the blood flows, it flows like rivers; hitting walls and fountaining on top of bloody stumps. Some will make comparisons to Abel Ferrara’s “The Addiction”; it has some similarities ala becoming a monster in the art scene. But while the “The Addiction” is an obvious drug metaphor, “Bliss” doesn't bother even thinly veiling the metaphor for drugs. The strong supporting cast helps a great deal. The vets of the picture Abraham Benrubi, George Wendt, and Mark Beltzman all add a certain amount of enjoyment and their performances seem natural. The fresher faces, only in comparison to the former, include Jeremy Gardner who always does a solid job and Graham Skipper who is nearly unrecognizable and becoming one of my favorite modern day faces to spot. “Bliss” is a must see and a great pick up by Dark Sky films. Joe Begos has come a long way and, like good directors, his films always get better. “Bliss” is a gory, beautiful statement on the art scene while coming across as personal without being preachy. A must own and one of the best films of the year. Plot Description: A brilliant painter facing the worst creative block of her life turns to anything she can to complete her masterpiece, spiraling into a hallucinatory hellscape of drugs, sex, and murder in the sleazy underbelly of Los Angeles. That man is Young-gul, a lonely and rather morbid student in late 1970’s South Korea. Narrowly surviving a murder-suicide attempt by a woman wearing a butterfly pendant, he next finds himself besieged by a seemingly insane bookseller who claims he can never die. Even after Young-gul burns the man’s body his skeleton comes back to taunt him. As if that weren’t enough, the poor student then finds himself the victim of a beautiful thousand year old woman (she looks about 25) who says she is hungry and wants to eat his liver…. The director, Kim Ki-young, was one of Korea’s most successful film makers. His 1960 production The Housemaid is now a recognized classic of world cinema. With this film he goes far beyond the bounds of the real and takes us into a world where anything seems possible, a world where a kind of dream logic rules. Almost impossible to summarize, the film is nevertheless insanely enjoyable. A real one of a kind production that opens our eyes to the limitless possibilities of cinema. In early twentieth-century Pennsylvania Dutch Country, young Billy Kelly (Chad Lowe, Highway to Hell) falls in with a charismatic "powwower" or folk magic healer, Dr. John Reese (Donald Sutherland, Don't Look Now), shunned by the rest of the community for his non-conformist beliefs. Together, they investigate the mysterious sickness that is blighting the area, which Reese believes to be the work of a sinister local hermit. But as the plague spreads and the wide-eyed Billy falls ever deeper under Reese's spell, are they doing God's work or the Devil's bidding? Also starring Mia Sara (Legend) and featuring a powerhouse performance by Donald Sutherland - reunited here with Don't Look Now screenwriter Allan Scott - Apprentice to Murder is a chilling and unforgettable tale of the macabre that blurs the lines between conventional notions of "good" and "evil".
