D.O.A.: A RIGHT OF PASSAGE is the ground-breaking classic "rockumentary" about the origin of punk rock. Centered around the Sex Pistols 1978 tour of the United States which ended with the group breaking up, the tour was the only one the Pistols played in the United States. Director Lech Kowalski (East of Paradise) followed the band with handheld cameras through the clubs and bars of their seven-city U.S. tour. Mixing this with footage of other contemporary bands, trends in the fashion capitals and punks of all shapes and colors, Kowalski captured a grainy, stained snapshot of the punk movement at its peak (which includes the now famous footage of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen in bed) along with rare interview and concert footage of the late seventies punk rock music scene. With live performances by the Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, Generation X (with Billy Idol), The Rich Kids, the X-Ray Spex, and Sham 69, along with additional music from The Clash, Iggy Pop, this iconic documentary is now available for the first time ever on disc! Caine plays Mickey King, a successful pulp novelist responsible for such titles as My Gun Is Long and The Organ Grinder, who is invited to ghost-write the autobiography of a mystery celebrity. His client turns out to be a former actor, played by Mickey Rooney, well-known for his gangster roles and real-life gangster connections - but death is around the corner, and King finds his commission to be a lot more complicated than he first imagined. A favourite of J.B. Ballard, Pulp has long existed in the shadow of its predecessor. Tonally, it could not be more different - Get Carter never had the time for sight gags and one-liners - but it's a real gem in its own right and fully deserving of a wider audience. Select)![]() Synopsis From legendary writer-director John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Conan The Barbarian) comes the tale of what-could-have-been, had the Cold War gone another way. When Communist paratroopers descend on a Colorado high school football field, a group of the school's students wages an all-out guerilla war to save their town — and their country. Featuring an all-star cast, including Patrick Swayze (Road House), Charlie Sheen (Platoon), Lea Thompson (Back To The Future), C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Powers Boothe (Tombstone) and Harry Dean Stanton (Alien), Red Dawn "comes up like thunder" (New York Post)! Why We Love It “Red Dawn is an entertaining 80s action/war film, with a unique premise and a good deal of flag-waving patriotism and heart. Whether you consider it a guilty pleasure or not, it’s just a damn fun film. One could certainly wish for a new film scan, but Shout’s done a solid job here with the resources they had available, and the new documentary is worth your time.” – Bill Hunt, The Digital Bits “…comes with some great bonus content, including an hour-ten retrospective documentary with all new interviews with a few people involved in the production of the film. Another area where the Shout! Select release of the film excels over the MGM release is the audio options. With two tracks to choose from, Red Dawn sounds better on home video than ever before.” – Shawn Savage, The Liberal Dead “I love Red Dawn. I love the action, the story, and the performances. As you can see here, it looks good and should be a welcomed edition to anyone who wants to see a really awesome movie from a really cool time.” – Chuck Conry, Zombies Don’t Run Bonus Features NEW "A Look Back At Red Dawn" – A 70 Minute Feature Including Brand-New Stories From Co-Star Doug Toby, Casting Director Jane Jenkins, Production Designer Jackson DeGovia And Editor Thom Noble Archival Featurette: "Red Dawn Rising" Archival Featurette: "Training For WWIII" Archival Featurette: "Building The Red Menace" Archival Featurette: "WWIII Comes To Town" Original Theatrical Trailer Shout Factory! The colors are so vibrant your eyes may bleed with a sound design so alive you might have to double check the house to make sure you aren’t hearing things. In other words the wait was worth it. The set up and story of “Suspiria” is straight forward on paper, but the execution is nothing of the sort. An American ballet student unravels a coven of witches in a strange dancing school in Germany. Sounds simple enough, but the result was an undeniable masterpiece that cemented Dario Argento as one of the holy trio of Italian horror directors along with Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci. It’s hard to speak of a film that film historians and scholars have written books on. Some obvious things come rushing to one’s head; the attention to detail, luxurious set designs, elaborate death scenes, unmatched composition, fancy camera work, and of course the amazing lighting. From the very opening of “Suspiria,” we are hit with the pulsating nightmarish music of Goblin. Soon enough, the film matches as our lead Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) is caught in a harsh thunderstorm while en route to her destination; the audience is treated to a visually stunning moment where her ride makes its way down a desolate wooded road. The trees engulf everything in sight and, along with the flickering lights of the storm and layers of shadows being created, we enter a true nightmare world. The entire film is a haunting painting; every frame a moment of beauty, not always easy to understand or rational, but none the less stunning. In fact that is “Suspiria” as a whole, irrational, but stunning. Unlike Dario Argento’s previous Giallo efforts, “Suspiria” features a term that was coined for some of his and Fulci’s films: Nightmare Logic. It doesn’t always make sense, but it does in the terms of a nightmare. In “The Beyond” it’s the gates of hell being opened and creating an environment where spiders and zombies roam uninterrupted; in “Suspiria” it’s a floating face and arm in the dark, a dog turning against his beloved owner, and maggots falling from the ceiling. It’s an experience of beauty and horror, a world where you long to look at and fear going to. The new steelbook release includes two audio commentaries by authors and Argento scholars, Derek Botelho, David Del Valle & Troy Howarth. Both of these commentaries are as entertaining as they are educational. Also included is a featurette with interviews with film makers and scholars, a video essay, a look at the locations in comparison with Nazi Germany, and an interview with Barbara Magnolfi who played Olga in the film. The features are entertaining and well put together. The only disappointment is that there aren’t very many people involved with the film on the disc although the amazing picture, sound, and CD Soundtrack included make up for that. A top notch film gets a top notch release and is in the running for best Blu-Ray of the year. Determined to celebrate his life, and death, the members of a local horror film society steal his freshly buried corpse and decide to host a party, in his honor, at their old and lavish mansion. Unaware that Radzoff’s interest in horror extended beyond the silver screen and into the black arts, his corpse is soon re-animated and he begins exacting a bloody revenge against those who disturbed his final resting place. Slyly combining 80s slasher tropes with an insightful and self reflective look at the meaning of horror movies and death itself, Norman Thaddeus Vane’s FRIGHTMARE (originally known as THE HORROR STAR) is a quick witted and suspenseful tribute to classic horror cinema. Lensed in stunning B&W by master cameraman Ted McCord (THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE), PRIVATE PROPERTY is both an eerie, Jim Thompson-esque thriller and a savage critique of the hollowness of the Playboy-era American Dream. Warren Oates delivers his first screen performance here, years before he emerged in THE WILD BUNCH and TWO-LANE BLACKTOP as one of the finest character actors of his generation; his bizarre Lennie-and-George relationship with the underrated Corey Allen (James Dean's hot rod rival in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE) is fueled by a barely-suppressed homoerotic tension. Director Stevens (a protégé of Orson Welles) and lead actress Manx were married at the time, and the film was shot in their home; several years later, Manx tragically committed suicide and her fragile spirit seems to hang over the film. Set during the early fifties, in the loneliest Texas nowheresville to ever dust up a movie screen, this aching portrait of a dying West, adapted from Larry McMurtry’s novel, focuses on the daily shuffles of three futureless teens—the enigmatic Sonny (Timothy Bottoms), the wayward jock Duane (Jeff Bridges), and the desperate-to-be-adored rich girl Jacy (Cybil Shepherd)—and the aging lost souls who bump up against them in the night like drifting tumbleweeds, including Cloris Leachman’s lonely housewife and Ben Johnson’s grizzled movie-house proprietor. Featuring evocative black-and-white imagery and profoundly felt performances, this hushed depiction of crumbling American values remains the pivotal film in the career of the invaluable director and film historian Peter Bogdanovich. Perhaps most notably, it's the definitive role for John Wayne as an icon of the classic Western--the hero (or antihero) who must stand alone according to the unwritten code of the West. The story takes place in Texas in 1868; Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a Confederate veteran who visits his brother and sister-in-law at their ranch and is horrified when they are killed by marauding Comanches. Ethan's search for a surviving niece (played by young Natalie Wood) becomes an all-consuming obsession. With the help of a family friend (Jeffrey Hunter) who is himself part Cherokee, Ethan hits the trail on a five-year quest for revenge. At the peak of his masterful talent, director Ford crafts this classic tale as an embittered examination of racism and blind hatred, provoking Wayne to give one of the best performances of his career. As with many of Ford's classic Westerns, The Searchers must contend with revisionism in its stereotypical treatment of "savage" Native Americans, and the film's visual beauty (the final shot is one of the great images in all of Western culture) is compromised by some uneven performances and stilted dialogue. Still, this is undeniably one of the greatest Westerns ever made.
