These "melodrama gialli", heavily inspired by Clouzot's Les diaboliques, relied less on graphic violence and high body counts and more on psychological tension. Minou (Dagmar Lassander, Lucio Fulci's The Black Cat) leads a pampered but dull life with her frequently absent husband, Peter (Pier Paolo Capponi, The Cat O' Nine Tails). One night, while out walking on the beachfront, Minou is accosted by a mysterious blackmailer (Simón Andreu, Death Carries a Cane) who informs her that Peter is a murderer. Driven by misplaced loyalty to her husband, Minou gives in to the blackmailer's every perverted whim in exchange for his silence. But as the blackmailer ups the ante, demanding that she submit to his increasingly obscene demands, can Minou hold on to what little remains of her sanity? Written by the prolific Ernesto Gastaldi (Torso), infused with a seductive score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Cat O' Nine Tails) and featuring a memorable turn by Nieves Navarro a.k.a. Susan Scott (Death Walks at Midnight) in the role of Minou's best friend, The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion is a trippy giallo delight that brings together the talents of many of the genre's leading lights on both sides of the camera. A definitive post-apocalypse blockbuster, Waterworld stars Kevin Costner (The Untouchables) as The Mariner - a mutant trader, adrift in a dystopian future where Earth is submerged under water and humankind struggles to survive on boats and in ramshackle floating cities. The Mariner becomes embroiled with the Smokers, a gang of pirates who, led by villainous leader Deacon (Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet), are seeking Enola (Tina Majorino, Napoleon Dynamite), a girl with a map to the mythical realm of "Dryland" tattooed on her back. Famous for both its epic scale and the controversy that swirled around its production, Waterworld is a key cult film of the 1990s, and an essential entry into the subgenre of ecologically-minded blockbusters. DINNER AT EIGHT. MURDER AT MIDNIGHT. In 2001, Robert Altman (MASH, The Long Goodbye) took the unexpected step into Agatha Christie territory with Gosford Park, a murder-mystery whodunit set in an English country house starring a host of British acting greats and with an Oscar-winning screenplay by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. It would become a huge success with audiences and critics alike. Set in 1932, the action unfolds during a weekend shooting party hosted by Sir William McArdle (Alan Bates), and his wife Lady Sylvia (Kristin Scott Thomas) at his estate, Gosford Park. Among the guests are friends, relatives, the actor and composer Ivor Novello (Jeremy Northam), and an American film producer (Bob Balaban). When Sir William is found murdered in the library, everyone - and their servants - becomes a suspect. Also starring Charles Dance, Michael Gambon, Richard E. Grant, Helen Mirren, Clive Owen, Maggie Smith, Emily Watson and many more, Altman produced another masterpiece deserving to be ranked alongside Nashville and Short Cuts as one his finest forays into ensemble drama. "The hands-down winner of the all-out best blaxploitation movie of the seventies," declares author and artist Darius James in That's Blaxploitation! Willie Dynamite may not be as well-known as John Shaft, Sweet Sweetback or Super Fly's Youngblood Priest, but he certainly deserves to be. Who is Willie Dynamite? He's the flashiest pimp in New York - he drives a personalised purple-and-gold Cadillac and wears some of the most eye-catching outfits ever seen on a cinema screen. He wants to be number one, but with the police, the D.A., fellow pimps and a tough-talking social worker on his tail, can a man as arrogant and amoral as Willie D avoid a downfall? Willie Dynamite competes with the best of blaxploitation on all levels. Roscoe Orman dominates with his central performance - a star turn that's the equal of Richard Roundtree in Shaft or Pam Grier in Coffy. Multi-award-winning director Gilbert Moses balances action and social commentary as deftly as Gordon Parks, Jr. did with Super Fly. And the score by J.J. Debbie, Curtis and Steven may seem cute as buttons. But their angelic facade conceals the wicked, murderous streak given to them having all been born under the same solar eclipse. The resulting film, a low-budget black and white comedy called The Wedding Party, would take three years to complete, and another three years to be released, but it would also establish a hugely important working relationship for the aspiring actor. One of the filmmakers, long before he became synonymous with suspense thanks to Carrie, Dressed to Kill and other classics, was Brian De Palma. He and De Niro would team up again in the next few years for two more comedies, both with a countercultural bent. Greetings, the first to receive an X certificate in the United States, is a freewheeling satire focusing on a trio of twentysomething friends - a conspiracy theorist, a filmmaker, and a voyeur played by De Niro - as they try to avoid the Vietnam War draft. Hi, Mom!, originally named Son of Greetings, returns to De Niro's voyeur, now an aspiring maker of adult films, for another humorous glimpse at late-sixties society, this time turning its attentions to experimental theater, cinéma vérité, the African American experience, and the white middle classes. Brought together for the first time - and each newly restored by Arrow Films especially for this release - these three films offer a fascinating insight into the early careers of two American cinema's major talents. No one can explain the Nomed madness, but some say it's because of the possession of a terrible demonic force. By way of an unnatural urge during her Mother's funeral, Susan entered her family's mausoleum, and ever since an evil presence has been lurking inside of her, waiting for a chance to come out. Now an adult, something is hiding inside Susan's body, coming out to grotesquely murder anyone who comes too close to uncovering her terrifying secret. A consummate blending of early 80s supernatural horror and slasher film tropes, Michael Dugan's (SUPER SEAL) MAUSOLEUM is a stylish, sleazy, and outrageously gory production, featuring a series of imaginative death scenes orchestrated by effects wizard John Carl Buechler (REANIMATOR, TROLL). The release has included two versions of the film; the theatrical and an extended, as well as commentaries and cast interviews. A schizophrenic homeless man is being tracked by a secret government agency due to his disruptive behavior in sunny Santa Cruz. The agency's goal is to make sure that the productivity of the human race doesn't slow down and the masses stay indoctrinated. The agency’s target takes on many different characters and personalities to evade capture. By taking on these personas, he mingles with different groups of people and starts to gain an influence. This leads the agency to believe our vagabond could be a huge threat to the preservation of the society and that the strange item he carries with him isn’t just a piece of plastic, but container for a new drug that can possibility bring about a change of thought and ideals in the human mind. This freedom of the mind could cause a catastrophic rebelling that would lead to the collapse of their power and society as we know it. Split is an acquired taste, as most cult films tend to be, but this film is one to split the audience (no pun intended). It’s a love it or leave it. Split has interesting themes and allegory. The agency in the film is both society and the government, with the thought process that individualism is a crime. The MacGuffin the homeless man treasures is a symbol of free thought. At times in the film it is brought up as a possible symbol of the want to be free and not an actual working device. Lastly, the man himself is a figure in the vein of Jesus Christ. The film’s villain even goes as far to reference Christ as a figure who caused much disruption until his religion could be turned profitable. The ideas are interesting and the message is fairly positive. The film, however, has a zany tone which doesn’t mix well with the serious allegory and makes the entire film feel tedious. It’s hard to tell if the jokes are even supposed to be funny. It’s more weird than humorous, which may be its intent, but doesn't seem to work playing the line of quirky and cerebral. The artist gallery showing is probably one of the stronger scenes in the film. The derelict hero wanders into an art showing littered with snobs and pretentious thinkers. The entire scene pokes fun at a bunch of fakes. The most interesting character in the film is Susan, her character actually manages to capture some humor with her neurotic behavior and crazy thoughts. Her arc is the most interesting as she appears in the beginning of the film as what is thought to be a throw away character and comes back unexpectedly as a love interest with major character development. The angle with her husband and her all-around performance steals the show. The film has some great visuals, in particular the final act. The villain is a dying man that is slowly turning into a machine. This is accomplished in the film by old age make up disappearing and being replaced by silver paint. After his full transformation there is some wonderful water photography play where, through a portal pool in his lair, he tries to intercept the lead in a pond. What follows is some of the most surreal and visually appealing scenes in the film’s entirety. Split is guaranteed to have its fans, even if this reviewer was a little harsh on it. It will leave its viewer digging into the allegory and message wholeheartedly or being rather bored with the entire ordeal and the strange mixture of tones. As anticlimactic as it may seem, one should really see the film and make up their own mind. After all, when it comes to cult cinema, it is an acquired taste. Plot Summary: Starker is the one man in a society of complacent people who can see the stifling control exerted on humankind by beings from another dimension. Living on garbage and in ever-changing disguise, he bounces from one person to another, trying to wake the world from its slavery. But as his ideas start to gain traction, he becomes the singular target of the Agency Director, a formidable dictator. Starker must race against advanced surveillance technology and evade countless agents to get his message out to the masses before he is neutralized by the forces of order. As much entertaining science fiction as it is and illustration of chaos theory applied to human nature, and featuring pioneering computer effects by MacArthur Genius Grant winner Robert Shaw, SPLIT is the fiercely unique vision of savant mathematician and artist Chris Shaw. Produced from a brand new 2K restoration from the original negatives, and including a never before released extended cut of the film. Special Features: - Includes both the original release version and the never before released extended cut of the film. - Director Commentary on both versions of the film. - Unused footage with director commentary. - New interview with actress Joan Bechtel. - New interview with actor John Flynn. - Original, remastered trailer. - English SDH on both cuts of the film.
