Peter Boyle stars as the titular character in one of his most memorable and daring roles. Only featuring a trailer, Olive makes up for the lack of features with great picture and equal sound. When Bill Compton, a successful business man, confronts his daughter's drug dealing boyfriend his anger gets the best of him. Bill quickly flees the scene to a local bar with a stash of drugs and a guilty conscious. When a loud mouth named Joe (Peter Boyle) says something that strikes a chord in Bill the duo start an unlikely relationship that can only bring tragedy. “Joe” doesn’t hold any punches the film is important, relevant, and funny as ever. “Joe” manages to capture something real and honest; it’s a statement about generational divides, classism, racism, drugs, sex, anger, and misunderstanding. The heart of “Joe” is about when someone lets their rage take over and letting a mistake lead to more. The interactions between Joe and Bill are as awkward as they are enlightening for both of the characters and through this the audience is as enlightened as well. The bitter comedy comes from two places; the aforementioned awkwardness and that there is truth to these characters. People like this do exist and that hateful spirit is found, to some capacity, in everyone. Through Bill’s one act of murder it inspires Joe and leads to a catalytic affect which only gets worse and worse. The mutual respect that the two share is a complex character study; Joe states he envies the way that Bill murdered a hippie drug dealer and as Bill hangs around Joe more and more seems to envy some of his traits. You learn a lot from the two at how they treat their spouses; Joe is more outwardly dismissive and angry while Bill seems to hide this, except during a pivotal moment even before he meets Joe. This little outburst from Bill shows that it isn’t Joe who gave Bill these feelings, but only help to cultivate them. When Joe and Bill begin to merge with the younger culture they seem to have gained some understanding and, at one point, we see this film going in a different direction, but the earlier foreshadowing makes for a different ending. The most haunting of which is when Joe’s wife tells him an African American family has moved down the block from them. Joe responds by shuffling down to the cellar and by intensely cleaning one of his many guns. Olive Films has done a service in bringing us “Joe” it’s a masterpiece and should be watched and studied, it features amazing performances, a wonderful script, and a gut punch of a 70’s style ending set up to perfection. Product Description: “I’m the ‘Joe’ everbody’s talking about,” heralded movie print ads for director John G. Avildsen’s (Rocky) film Joe, proving that there’s truth in advertising. The modestly budgeted film would go on to become a multi-million-dollar box-office success, garnering an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. Peter Boyle (TV’s Everybody Loves Raymond) stars as Joe Curran, the titular everyman and unabashed hippie-hater. Joe, who equates hippies with everything un-American, finds a kindred spirit in Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick, Chances Are), an advertising executive who makes Joe’s acquaintance at a neighborhood bar, boasting that he killed a drug-dealing hippie (Patrick McDermott, The French Connection). Bill, pressed for facts by the intrigued Joe, recants saying that he was merely joking. But when a news report confirms the incident, vigilante justice akin to Taxi Driver is set in motion. Joe, directed by John G. Avildsen, written by Norman Wexler (Serpico) and featuring the screen debut of Susan Sarandon (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), also stars Audrey Caire (They Saved Hitler’s Brain), K Callan (American Gigolo) and Patrick McDermott (The French Connection). Previously known as “The Traveler,” it’s considered one of Paul Naschy’s finest directional efforts. “The Devil Incarnate” is presented in stunning HD with features that include the horror icon, his kin, and Troy Howarth. Paul Naschy plays a mischievous and evil traveler who exploits and morally corrupts anyone he comes in contact with. Along the way, he takes along a young man to impart his methods and share in his sin. The duo visit monasteries and whore houses alike until the ultimate revelation is made. “The Devil Incarnate” is a bitter statement about human nature. It is mean spirited and raunchy yet hilarious; beautiful to look at and, most importantly, honest. Like other European filmmakers, Naschy had a lot to say about politics and the church, but being a filmmaker he understood the perfect approach to captivate an audience. The lead character’s cruelty seems to know no bounds; his joyous glee that is stamped on his face when he takes advantage of women sexually is so repulsive and shocking that the audience is left without much else to do but laugh. On the other side of the coin, the crimes committed against the more deserving, such as greedy lords, help the audience side with the villainy; similar to the television head smashing scene in “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” or the feelings toward the Firefly clan in “The Devil’s Rejects.” Naschy is excellent in the film and shows a nice range from comedy to drama, his companion Tomas (David Rocha) also delivers in a solid performance gradually being turned from a naïve boy to a vindictive man. One of the most striking images occurs when Naschy is finally caught up to for his evil deeds and must pay in a similar fashion to the god he despises. The composition in the scene is perfectly placed; pillars framing the cross and the beautiful landscape in the back bringing it all together. Mondo Macabro provides an excellent release, the picture quality is top notch and the remaster work helps the great lighting stand out. Troy Howarth, who is currently writing a book on Naschy, provides a very informative commentary and out does himself in usual fashion. Also included is an introduction from Naschy and interviews with his children which bring an insight on the man, himself, and making this release even more worth the a price tag. Plot Summary: A master class in sin and depravity, when the Devil himself walks the earth! "…and no good deed shall go unpunished …" The action takes place in 16th century Spain. The Devil comes to earth to live as a mere mortal. Together with a human companion, Tomas, he travels, like Don Quixote, through the countryside and has a series of wild encounters with both men and women. On the way he acquires great wealth and even fathers a child. But too late he learns a terrible lesson about we devious humans. Widely recognised as one of horror star Paul Naschy's very best films, THE DEVIL INCARNATE is bawdy, shocking, funny and thought provoking. In the spirit of THE DECAMERON or THE CANTERBURY TALES the film presents a parade of human types from the saintly to the downright mean and nasty. But who is worse… the Devil or Mankind? Created from a brand new 4k scan of the original negative, THE DEVIL INCARNATE makes its Blu-ray and US debut in an edition packed with exclusive extra features. Disc Special Features: - Brand new 4k transfer from film negative. - Introduction to the film by Paul Naschy. - Exclusive interview with actor David Rocha. - Exclusive interviews with Sergio and Bruno Molina. - A tour of Paul Naschy’s study and home. - Exclusive audio commentary by Troy Howarth. - Mondo Macabro previews. The cannibal seems to have strange symbols that belong to an extinct tribe that could only be found in one place in the world. With a good story on her mind, Emanuelle decides to take her chances and head toward the jungle. After she enlists Professor Mark Lester, the duo are on their way and what a way it is. Not only do they run into cannibals, booby traps, and an impotent Donald O’Brien, they also discover a sexual appetite that seems to be bottomless. “Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals” isn’t the strongest of its genre but it is certainly one of the most memorable; after all, how many times does Emanuelle visit a dangerous cannibal ridden jungle? Laura Gemser is most likely to bring in more than half the audience but the other half that is in hopes of a violent jungle adventure flick won’t be let down, either. The film is half gut muncher and half softcore erotica. Emanuelle manages to sleep with as many partners as she can find; whether in the city or jungle, man or woman. She does all this while running from a lost tribe with a huge appetite. How talented. Some of the most graphic stuff includes a scene where a nun is stripped and disemboweled after having her nipple cut off and eaten. This scene plays fairly effective and the camera work adds a layer of intensity as it looks toward the tree line above in a panic, placing us in the poor sister's last moments. The score of the film is much better than it deserves. Nico Fidenco’s score is not only beautiful but memorable and very similar to the work he did on “Zombie Holocaust.” Donald O’Brien and Susan Scott play sweaty and desperate well, even if they are obviously up to no good from the first second they are on screen. The film’s budget shows mostly in the day for night scenes; they are done so poorly it becomes confusing as to what time it actually is. This may be due to poor exposure or a damaged negative. Severin has provided a nice array of special features on its disc including new interviews with composer Nico Fidenco, Actress Annamaria Clementi, Actress Monika Zanchi, Actor Donald O’Brien, and an archival interview with Laura Gemser. The Nico Fidenco and Donald O’Brien interviews stand out, both go over their careers with interesting stories about the business and interactions with others. All and all Severin does a great job on another cannibal flick. Plot Summary: In 1977, infamous filth auteur Joe D’Amato (BEYOND THE DARKNESS, ANTRHOPOPHAGUS) combined the insane extremes of eroticism and cannibalism for the most groin-grinding, gut-munching, gore-spewing EuroSleaze saga of them all: When journalist Emanuelle (the ever-luscious Laura Gemser of BLACK EMANUELLE fame) discovers evidence of an extinct cannibal tribe in a Manhattan mental hospital, her investigation will take her to the Amazon jungle for an orgy of carnage that SexGoreMutants calls “...feral, demented and nasty. And in exploitation terms, that’s entertainment!” Gabriele Tinti (EMANUELLE IN AMERICA), Monica Zanchi (SISTER EMANUELLE) and Donald O’Brien (DOCTOR BUTCHER, M.D.) co-star in “the flesh & fear masterpiece from the late great splatter genius” (DVD Beaver) released to ‘80s grindhouses as TRAP THEM AND KILL THEM and now scanned in 2k from original vault elements. Disc Special Features: - The World of Nico Fidenco - An interview with composer Nico Fidenco. - A Nun Among the Cannibals - An interview with actress Annamaria Clementi. - Dr. O'Brien MD - An interview with actor Donald O'Brien. - From Switzerland to Mato Grosso - An Interview with actress Monika Zanchi. - I Am Your Black Queen - Laura Gemser archive audio interview. - Theatrical Trailer Severin Films Website – https://severin-films.com/ Buy “Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals” on Blu-Ray – https://severin-films.com/shop/emanuelle-and-the-last-cannibals-slipcover/ Severin Films Bundle – https://severin-films.com/shop/laura-gemser-deluxe-bundle/ "Violence in a Women's Prison" Blu-Ray Review (Severin Films)![]() Written Review by MrParka Severin Films brings another sleazy Italian flick to Blu-Ray for the first time anywhere! Bruno Mattei directs an Emanuelle flick. This time around poor Laura Gemser goes undercover in a women’s prison. We all know what happens from here… “Violence in a Women’s Prison”. Again to get a good story, Emanuelle puts her sanity and well-being at risk by secretly entering a cruel prison system. Emanuelle’s goal is to expose the awful truth to a humanitarian group and get better conditions for the prisoners, but when the guards find out what she is up to the beatings and sadism go into overdrive. The woman in prison genre has always been known as one of the sleaziest and most debaucherously depraved of the exploitation genre, but it seems Bruno Mattei has taken it a step further. Laura Gemser is joined in this sickie by the familiar faces of her real life husband Gabriele Tinti, Lorraine De Selle (Cannibal Ferox), and Franca Stoppi (Beyond the Darkness) in a role she was born to play, a sadistic prison guard. It almost seems like the filmmakers had a check list to try and offend as many people as possible; lesbian rape, implied homosexual rape with a stick, gay stereotypes, sadism, torture, and to top it all off; is it really a Bruno Mattei flick unless someone is attacked by rats? It comes as a surprise that the film manages to bring in as many characters as it does although they are mostly one dimensional. At times they do have small arcs in the story and eventually have some resolve, usually by their inevitable death. Besides the typical beatings in the film, some of the more creative (that word is used here interchangeably with cruel) is a rape scene of a new female prisoner by two older male prisoners while the prison wardens from each facility secretly watch and have sex. These levels of sleaziness are almost an art; a repugnant one, but the extent of debauchery here can’t go understated or unmentioned. From time to time, a dramatic scene actually works. When the lone homosexual prisoner is being comforted by the Doctor, it almost seems too genuinely kind to be part of this film. Severin Films has done a great job in restoring this low budget flick and even included a couple extras. A short imported interview with Bruno Mattei is a decent watch, but the new interview with Claudio Fragasso and his wife Rossella Drudi is outstanding. The duo talk about their career which included many uncredited works and of course the film at hand “Violence in a Woman’s Prison.” We learn a little bit about their process and Bruno Mattei’s. Severin Films tackles another title that a handful of companies wouldn’t dare touch and gives it respect it may or may not deserve. Plot Summary: In an over-the-top career filled with cannibals, zombies, nuns and Nazis, only EuroSleaze maestro Bruno Mattei (THE OTHER HELL, SHOCKING DARK) – along with frequent collaborators/co-writers Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi (TROLL 2, ZOMBIE 3 and 4) – could take the BLACK EMANUELLE series to such insane depths of depravity. When Emanuelle (the legendary Laura Gemser) goes undercover in a penitentiary, she will endure a nightmare of sadistic guards, voracious lesbians, rat attacks, feces fights and enough graphic mayhem for a dozen women-in- prison trash epics. Gabriele Tinti (EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS), Lorraine De Selle (CANNIBAL FEROX) and Franca Stoppi (BEYOND THE DARKNESS) co-star in this “classic of exploitation” (Yell Magazine) – also known as CAGED WOMEN and EMANUELLE IN PRISON – now featuring a 2k scan from an uncensored inter-positive. Disc Special Features: - Brawl in Women's Block - Interview with co-director/co-writers Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi. - Archive interview with director Bruno Mattei. - Radio Spot. Did you ever happen to catch those Scariest Movie Moments countdowns on the TV channel Bravo back in the day? ("The 100 Scariest Movie Moments", "30 Even Scarier Movie Moments", and "13 Scarier Movie Moments") From what I remember they were actually kind of cool, inclusive enough to even list 2 Fulci films and 1 by Argento.
