Or possibly how did this get made? One of those films responsible for those inquires is the 60s no budgeter “Creeping Terror” directed by Art Nelson. The film, “The Creep Behind the Camera” coming to Bluray from Synapse films, answers those questions about this awful monster movie curiosity and, in the process, shows us that some movies have a stories behind them that are far better than any film. “The Creep Behind the Camera” is not your typical film, its part documentary and part recreation. The documentary part of the film is made up of interviews with the key players who are still alive, film scholars, and friends of the cast and crew. The recreation part is mostly retellings of the odd lives of Art Nelson, his wife Lois, and producer William Thourlby and their interactions with other strange characters. The main focus being on the making of “The Creeping Terror” which is most certainly William Thourlby’s biggest failure and, possibly, even Art’s. Although Nelson was a sociopathic monster, his story is shown in a darkly comedic light with moments of dark drama. It's truly a feat at how dark the film goes without losing its playful touch due to the comic timing and editing. Creep manages going as far as showing a glimpse of child pornography that seemingly was a part of Art Nelson’s shady life. The heart of the story is with Lois overcoming the abuse. Actress Jodi Lynn Thomas manages to bring an innocence about her which demands sympathy. Some of the most dramatic moments in the film are followed by interview snippets with the real life Lois. It's near unbearable when Lois struggles to speaks as she recalls her abuse from the hands of her husband. Josh Phillips plays Art Nelson dead on; he truly is a monster more so than the one in his movie. He abuses, cheats, lies, manipulates, and uses drugs. Not once does Nelson have any regret and when he is pressured he breaks into false tears. His devilish grin and sleazy demeanor work well when he is convincing people to pay for an acting role in what he tells everyone will be the best and biggest monster movie ever made! Bill LeVasseur as William Thoulby stands out as a producer whose been taken advantage of, his expression of concern is almost as dead on as his likeness to the real life Bill Tholby. “Creep Behind the Camera” is slightly jarring from time to time due to it jumping around from year to year with interviews spliced in between. The film doesn’t go in chronological order and tends to follow the cues from the interviews. For someone who isn’t familiar with the story it can become a little uncertain when Lois eventually leaves Nelson. The recreations are done well enough to stand alone without the interviews. The recreations are shot better than most straight forward films and feature some great tracking camera work from above, especially during the final scene with Art Nelson. The music choices seem to fit the time the original “Creeping Terror” was made and plays well into the energetic and playful touches the film has. The set recreations are amazingly detailed as well as the wardrobe and the creature. One would be hard pressed to tell a major difference about the recreated monster from “Creep Behind the Camera” and the original. Besides an interesting Hollywood outskirts story, Creep comes together due to the professionalism the cast and crew seemed to have and the amazing attention to detail. “Creep Behind the Camera” is loaded with features including “Creeping Terror” in a 2k scan, an audio commentary, creating the monster behind the scenes featurette, and a Q&A. “The Creeping Terror” is required viewing as a father piece to “Creep Behind the Camera” and is amazingly interesting to compare. The film makers and Synapse both put in the hard work to bring an interesting piece of film about an interesting piece of film. Plot Summary: A creature is haunting the streets of Los Angeles, waiting for the cover of night to stalk innocent young girls. Hungry for fame and fortune, it’s fueled by a demonic rage ready to devour anyone attempting to hinder its becoming the most powerful entity in Hollywood. While sometimes called A.J. Nelson, this demon is more commonly known as Vic Savage. This is his story… In 1964, Vic Savage made THE CREEPING TERROR with a microscopic budget verging on the non-existent. Quickly earning a reputation as the worst movie ever made, it tells of the arrival of an unconvincing alien life-form (a shambling carpet creature made of plastic tubing, wire and soap) that devours its picnicking, dancing and guitar-playing victims. Much like the infamous Ed Wood, Savage managed to pull off a variety of schemes to convince an honest producer to invest in what he promised to be “the biggest monster movie ever made”. Told through re-enactments and containing shockingly true stories of many of the actual people involved with the production, Pete Schuermann’s THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA is the funny and ultimately terrifying saga of the making of THE CREEPING TERROR, and a disastrous portrait of a talentless artist who ultimately succumbs to his own self-destructive behavior. Starring Josh Phillips in the larger-than-life performance as Vic Savage, and Jodi Lynn Thomas (AMC’s PREACHER) as his unsuspecting wife Lois, THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA pays vibrant tribute to an inglorious chapter in the history of genre cinema, incidentally exposing one of the most unimaginably radical antitheses of the Hollywood dream. Blu-ray Extras Include: Audio commentary by film historians Nathaniel Thompson and Tim Greer Trailers Buy Blu-Ray and DVD here - https://www.kinolorber.com/product/view/id/3936 Death Sentence (VUDU) Review![]() James Wan (Saw) brings the ultra-violence to this gritty story of a suburban father (Kevin Bacon) who discovers the consequences of revenge after his son is murdered. The perpetrators of this senseless killing are a multi-ethnic (and highly visible) gang of drug dealers and cutthroats led by the psychotic Billy Darley (Garrett Hedlund); when the case is thrown out on a technicality, Bacon takes a page from Charles Bronson's book (no surprise, as this is based on author Brian Garfield's 1975 follow-up to Death Wish) and pursues a vigilante course to avenge his boy. Things do not go according to Bacon's plan, which cues a series of frantic and well-executed action set pieces, most notably a parking structure chase that unfolds in a nearly unbroken take. Death Sentence breaks no new ground in the action-thriller department, and its characters and dialogue are nearly indistinguishable from any violent crime movie of the last few decades (in its weakest moments, it resembles grindhouse fare like The Exterminator); however, Bacon is excellent (as always) as the mild-mannered architect who discovers his inner killer the hard way, and Wan's knack for screen mayhem and unsettling atmosphere are well used here. The DVD includes both the theatrical version and an unrated cut (which offers 10 additional minutes), as well as two making-of featurettes that originally aired on the Fox Movie Channel, and several webisodes that focus on director Wan, his cast, and the film's elaborate stunts and fight scenes. Hey Dave, I might be late, but if you see this in time then please enter in the contest. I watched "Miracle Mile" and you're right it's a neat movie, but strange in the way that it felt like John Hughes made an apocalyptic movie. AND Bubba from "Forrest Gump" was good!
