Young millionaire Frank's beautiful girlfriend, Anna dies of a strange illness. Unable to let go, Frank steals Anna’s body and preserves her using his taxidermy skills. Frank begins to pick up young girls to fulfill his sexual urges and attempts to incorporate the corpse of his past lover in the mix. This morbid obsession starts a chain of murders and mayhem. Franks's housekeeper (Franca Stoppi) who is part sexual partner and mother figure to Frank helps dispose of the corpses. This set up is shaky but working, until Franca demands Frank removes the corpse from the premises. Frank’s refusal of Franca’s demand and the arrival of Anna’s twin sister lead to a bloody climax between the duo. “Beyond the Darkness” is without a doubt one of the most disgusting Italian horror films ever made. Not only is the gore repulsive but the subject matter, tone, and themes are as well. During a scene where Frank brings home an injured jogger for sex reveals this most. While the pair is beginning to start their sexual encounter Frank reaches over to unveil the corpse he has preserved lying in the nearby bed, unknowingly to the horror of his soon to be victim. The way Frank stumbles into murder, perversion, and obsessions recalls the case of Ed Gein. If you were to switch Gein’s fascination from mother to lover, in other words their inability to let go and obsession with death has pushed them to commit murder. This comparison adds a layer of realism to the usually cheesy nature of Italian horror films of this time and budget. Franca Stoppi is such a despicable character it’s hard to decide who’s the bigger monster between her and Frank. Although Frank is doing the killing, Stoppi helps him cover up his crimes and keeps him at bay with sexual motherly comfort. Her comforting is very incestuous feeling and is rather disturbing especially when she exposes her breast to him and he suckles on it like a child. In a truly gag inducing moment Franca taunts Frank by eating her dinner in such a sloppy manner moments earlier the two discarded remnants of a freshly melted victim by burying them in a pit filled with liquefied animal remains. The scene cuts back and forth between the stew and the bubbling pit of gore, gagging not only Frank but anyone brave enough to watch. Among the violence and gore a truly graphic autopsy scene is included where real guts and pig skin is used. A fair share of nudity is also sported, both full front from male and female, most of which lingers in sleazy fashion. On the more artistic side is some well-done camera work. A memorable one shot that follows the suspicious funeral director looking for the missing corpse of Anna is one of the highlights. To round out the film is a memorable score by Goblin. The main theme will surely be known to any fans of the band and enjoyed by those who aren’t familiar. The main theme is big and creepy with lively energy. On the other hand the track reserved for Frank and his lover is fairly heartfelt and touching and helps add the tiniest bit of sympathy for Frank. “Beyond the Darkness” is one of the most demented stories of lost love around. It’s filled with plenty of repellent moments of violence and gore and enough nudity to qualify as a softcore film; it may not be pretty but it’s effective. Severin has ported over the previous features including the amazing Joe D'Amato: The Horror Experience which features a long interview with the director and his collaborators spliced with footage from his most memorable films. This featurette is wonderful and Aristide Massaccesiaka aka Joe D’mato doesn’t hold back. Also included are an interview with Franca Stoppi and two new featurettes including an interview with Cinzia Monreale and a comparison between the locations then and now. For good measure Severin has tossed in a CD of the soundtrack so you can enjoy the sounds of Goblin anywhere. Another nice release from Severin as always. Product Description: It has been denounced as "revolting" (SplatterDay.com), "stomach-churning" (Classic-Horror.com) and "shower-prompting" (Fandor), while simultaneously acclaimed as "bone-chilling" (Chas Balun), "truly classic" (The Spinning Image) and "a must-see" (Horror.com). Now experience "D'Amato's masterpiece" (BloodyDisgusting.com) like you've never seen or heard it before: CinzIa Monreale (THE BEYOND) and Franca Stoppi (THE OTHER HELL) star in this psycho sickie - set to a pounding score by Goblin. Monty Python animator Terry Gilliam mostly achieves a tricky balancing act in his second feature as sole director, creating a dark, irreverent comedy disguised as a family adventure. Particularly amusing are the boy's encounters with various historical figures, including an entertainment-starved Napoleon (Ian Holm), a powerful Agamemnon (Sean Connery), and a surprisingly stuffy Robin Hood, embodied by Gilliam's Python cohort John Cleese. Episodic by nature, the film is less successful when dealing with the larger narrative, which concerns the pursuit of the dwarves and their time-traveling map by the Supreme Being. However, the combination of Gilliam's visual exuberance and the witty script (by Gilliam and Michael Palin) ensures an entertaining, if erratic, journey. The time is 1881. Powerful interests want New Mexico tamed for their brand of progress, and Sheriff Pat Garrett (James Coburn) is commissioned to rid the territory of his old gunfighting comrades. He serves fair notice to William Bonney--Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson)--and his Fort Sumter cronies, but it's not in their nature, or his, to go quietly. Peckinpah's theme, more than ever, is the closing of the frontier and the nature of the loss that that entails. But this time his vision takes him beyond genre convention, beyond history and legend, to the bleeding heart of myth--and surely of himself. This is one strange and original movie. In 1973 most American reviewers responded by panning it and deriding its director, whom they saw as having betrayed the promise of Ride the High Country, been swept up in his own cult of violence, and become incoherent as a storyteller. Coherence wasn't helped by MGM's cutting at least a quarter-of-an-hour out of the finished film and removing a bitter, retrospective prelude. Subsequent releases have restored a lot of material, and now there's more widespread appreciation of the depth and power of Peckinpah's achievement. The cast, teeming with fine character actors, is extraordinary, making the gallery of frontier denizens vivid and resonant. Coburn's Garrett, a man who comes to loathe himself for his mission yet cannot abandon it, is the high-water mark of the actor's career. L.Q. Jones, Luke Askew, Harry Dean Stanton, Jack Elam, and Richard Bright create indelible moments, and Slim Pickens becomes the center of an unforgettably moving scene. The presence of Kristofferson (just starting out as an actor) and Bob Dylan (whose enigmatic role is nearly wordless) nudges us toward recognizing Old West outlawry as an early form of rock stardom--flesh-and-blood gods for a primitive society to feed on. --Richard T.
