Responsible for hundreds of cases of kinder trauma, this Canadian oddity is finally available on Blu-ray in the states. Michael, a good natured kid decides to investigate a house that had recently burnt down. He is conned into entering the house by the way of a garbage shoot by his mischievous friend Connie. Michael suffers a terrible fright and fall after he sees something inside the house. The next morning, to his chagrin, Michael’s hair falls out. After being bullied at school, he decides to stay home. A few days pass and a pair of homeless people who died in the house fire invade his dreams and give him a solution to his problems... the peanut butter solution. “The Peanut Butter Solution” has a crazy plot, outrageous characters, and an undeniable charm. At moments certain scenes and subplots could be accused of being nightmare fuel. One such subplot involves an eccentric art teacher kidnapping and turning his students into a child slave ring where they use Michael’s magic growing hair to make magic paint brushes. Other scenes, however, are purely sugary; nearly all the scenes with Susie, the older sister come off as such. Susie’s attempts at finding the missing kids with the help of Connie and a bag of sugar feel like they could be from any kids film at the time. While the previous mentioned subplot feels a little too dark, the mixture of the two makes for a unique viewing experience. One of the goofier gags in the film is of Susie walking around in her mother’s giant robe and preparing meals poorly while attempting to be a surrogate for the temporarily absent mother. The magical aspects of the film make for a nice touch and are sure to keep kids a little bit more invested and intrigued. The theme music is very well done and ends up taking space in your head longer than you may wish. It comes as a surprise that Celine Dion actually had a hand on some of the tracks in the film, which explains why it’s a tad catchy. “The Peanut Butter Solution” is much more interesting than a lot of its American counter parts and makes the perfect midnight movie for kids. Severin Films has included some nice features along with two presentations of the film. The most interesting of the feature being “Human Beings Are The Same All Over: An Interview with Producer Rock Demers”. Producer Rock Demers has lived a very interesting life and career and this feature not only showcases that, but a wide variety of interesting family friendly movies he produced. Also included on the disc is a new Commentary with Rock Demers and Actor Matthew MacKay, Moderated by Filmmaker Ara Ball. Rounding out the disc are two more interviews one with actor Siluck Saysanasy and one with Paul Corupe an expert on Canadian Kids Film. If you were a child in the ‘80s, you were likely traumatized for life by repeated viewings of this on cable or VHS. If you’ve never seen it, nothing can prepare you for the damage that awaits your psyche: For our premiere release, Severin Kids presents the “notoriously strange and creepy” (BeatRoute.ca) Canadian kiddie feature about burning winos, sudden baldness, psychotic teachers, suburban abductions, juvenile sweatshops and the icky concoction that grows long lustrous pubes. Mathew Mackay, Michael Hogan (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA), and Siluck Saysanasy (DEGRASSI HIGH) star in this surreal mind-roaster that Moviejawn.com calls “The real deal…It plays like an Afterschool Special telling kids their hair will fall out, peers will make fun of you, and you will be whisked away to a demented underworld where Celine Dion sings and children beg for their lives.” Special Features: Extended U.S. Theatrical Release Version New Commentary with Producer Rock Demers and Actor Matthew MacKay, Moderated by Filmmaker Ara Ball Human Beings Are The Same All Over: An Interview with Producer Rock Demers Conrad’s Peanut Butter Solution: An Interview with Siluck Saysanasy Tales for All: Paul Corupe on Rock Demers and the Canadian Kids Film Alternate U.S. Theatrical Release Version Canadian Trailer Original U.S. Trailer Severin Films – https://severin-films.com/ “The Peanut Butter Solution” Blu-Ray – https://severin-films.com/shop/pbs-bluray/ "The Bells of St. Mary’s" Blu-Ray Review (Olive Films)![]() Witty and heartwarming, The Bells of St. Mary’s features the unforgettable pairing of Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman, in a timeless classic from Leo McCarey. Reprising his Academy Award winning role in Going My Way, Crosby stars as Father O’Malley – a priest on a mission to help revitalize the financially-strapped parochial school St. Mary’s. O’Malley’s assignment, to determine if St. Mary’s should be abandoned due to its decline, soon has him butting heads with the school’s headstrong manager, Sister Benedict (Bergman). But their squabbles are rendered inconsequential with the arrival of Horace P. Bogardus (Henry Travers), a skin-flint businessman set on seeing St. Mary’s condemned to make way for a parking lot. With tremendous warmth, this tale of a devoted pair fighting against the odds has been delighting audiences for generations. Nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress, The Bells of St. Mary’s features memorable supporting performances by Una O’Connor, Joan Carroll, William Gargan, Rhys Williams, and Dickie Tyler. Written for the screen by Dudley Nichols (Bringing Up Baby) from a story by McCarey, the film’s impressive technical credits include costume design by Edith Head, cinematography by George Barnes, and art direction by William Flannery. After their car breaks down, a group of travelers find themselves stranded in a remote part of New England. After taking shelter in a spooky old mansion, complete with a graveyard, they discover a ouija board and decide to spend the night attempting to summon some spirits. But the group soon learns that playing with the forces of black magic isn't fun and games, and it's not long before they're head-to-head with all sorts of demonic creatures, shape shifters, and other forms of evil, all of whom are more than happy to pick them off in the most gruesome of ways. Of all of the bizarre horror films made in the 1980s, SPOOKIES easily ranks among the weirdest. Produced by Michael Lee, founder of the adored UK home video distributor VIPCO, the film became a fan favorite thanks to its expertly rendered creature effects and notorious for its bizarre production history in which its original creators, co-writers/directors Brendan Faulkner & Thomas Doran and co-writer/producer Frank M. Farel, were fired and replaced by Eugenie Joseph, who added new scenes and re-edited the previously shot footage, resulting in the legendary oddity SPOOKIES has become. Vinegar Syndrome proudly brings SPOOKIES to Blu-ray for the first time, newly restored in 4K from its long lost original negative and including a brand new, feature-length 'making of' documentary, charting its incredible and often unbelievable production history. directed by: Thomas Doran, Brendan Faulkner and Eugenie Joseph starring: Peter Dain, Nick Gionta, Joan Ellen Delaney, Peter Iasillo, Charlotte Alexandra, Anthony Valbiro, Kim Merrill, Lisa Friede, Soo Paek, Maria Pechukas, Felix Ward 1985 / 85 min / 1.85:1 Special features: • Region Free 2-disc Blu-ray Set • Newly scanned & restored in 4k from its 35mm original camera negative • “Twisted Tale - The Unmaking of Spookies” - a feature-length making-of documentary, including a commentary track with documentary co-directors Michael Gingold & Glen Baisley and extensive deleted scenes. • “VIPCO - The Untold Story” - a feature-length documentary on the notorious UK home video label, including extended interview footage with Michael Lee (founder of VIPCO) and a trailer. • 2015 Alamo Drafthouse screening introductions with Spookies director Thomas Doran and co-writer/producer Frank M. Jackson (Gregory Cox) is your run-of-the-mill, hockey mask wearing psychotic killer. Hideously deformed, he spends his time stalking and brutally murdering over-sexed young people, in a variety of nasty methods. But then he meets Shelly (Fiona Evans), a young blind woman who appreciates him as a person (it helps that she can't see the carnage he leaves at every turn). Finding himself falling in love for the first time, Jackson decides that it might be time to finally hang up his cutlery and settle into a happy life of domestic bliss. But can he really overcome his bloodthirsty impulses? A biting horror-comedy from director Anders Palm and producer Mark Cutforth, UNMASKED PT. 25 (aka HANDS OF DEATH) cleverly plays off of every 80s horror cliche (along with satirizing a number of indie film tropes, for good measure), while reveling in some of the most gruesome gore effects which can be found in a post-nasties British made film. Vinegar Syndrome is proud to rescue this under-seen cult classic and bring it to Blu-ray for the first time.
