An ex-cop (Ed Bagley) has a plan to pull off a simple robbery, but needs to enlist some help. At the top of his list are an indebted gambling lounge singer (Harry Belafonte) and an ex con with a mean streak (Robert Ryan) trying to feel adequate in a world where he no longer fits. Their plan was solid, but their egos and racist ideology got in the way. “Odds Against Tomorrow” is a straight forward story that follows the lives of three men and the people they affect. The film relies on anticipation and suspense, setting up each character by showing their weaknesses and finally putting them all together in a steaming pot. As the audience, you know what to expect due to the aggression shown by the characters. Each earlier scene reveals an interesting layer beneath. A previous scene shows Johnny (Belafonte) having a meltdown while performing on stage. This shows his unpredictability and rattled nature perfectly. The other protagonist, Earle (Ryan), shows his hair line trigger when he drops a show off sailor with a single punch to the stomach. When the two finally meet the tension is thick as neither knows the other's reputation, but the audience knows their capacity for violence. The rest of the film is a waiting game as the robbery is slowly built to and, as Earle states aggravated, “it’s not the action that’s the problem, it's the waiting.” And the waiting is what makes the movie; waiting for the inevitable. When it finally does come, the analogy at the end of the film works wonderfully; anger and hatred destroys all and the pile of rubble left in its wake is all the same rubble, neither black nor white. “Odds Against Tomorrow” looks and sounds great, the black and white camera photography is top notch. Included are subtitles and a trailer. Product Description: Odds Against Tomorrow, Academy Award winner Robert Wise’s (West Side Story) taut film noir, stars Academy Award® nominee Robert Ryan (Supporting Actor, Crossfire – 1948) as Earle Slater, a racist ex-con looking to make a quick buck, and Harry Belafonte (Carmen Jones) as Johnny Ingram, a nightclub performer with gambling debts and in need of some cash. Recruited by disgraced cop David Burke (Ed Begley, Academy Award® winner for Supporting Actor, Sweet Bird of Youth – 1963) to help with a bank heist, Slater and Ingram become bitter allies in their greed and shared rage against the world. But a pivotal moment will send both men toward a cataclysmic outcome that is anything but black and white. Odds Against Tomorrow features supporting performances by Academy Award® winner Shelley Winters (Supporting Actress, The Diary of Anne Frank – 1960; Supporting Actress, A Patch of Blue – 1966) as Lorry, Slater’s apprehensive girlfriend, and Academy Award® winner Gloria Grahame (Supporting Actress, The Bad and the Beautiful – 1953) as Helen, Slater’s emotionally damaged neighbor. Written for the screen by Nelson Gidding (The Haunting) and Abraham Polonsky (Academy Award® nominee, Writing, Original Screenplay – Body and Soul, 1948), who due to the Blacklist was fronted by novelist John O. Killens, Odds Against Tomorrow is photographed by Joseph C. Brun (Academy Award® nominee, Cinematography, Black & White, Martin Luther – 1954) and edited by three-time Academy Award® nominee Dede Allen (Dog Day Afternoon – 1976, Reds – 1982 shared with Craig McKay, Wonder Boys – 2001). Filled with plenty of satire and gags, it’s sure to please most any fans of comedy. In an attempt to gain some positive publicity, a tobacco company offers a 25 million dollar prize to any town in America that can stop smoking for 30 days. A reverend decides to take it upon himself to enter the town of Eagle Rock. “Cold Turkey” opens up brilliantly with a long tracking shot of a dog wandering a broken down town. The shot finally ends with the dog taking a leak on a sign. The opening lets the viewer know everything they need to know about the desperation of the small town of Eagle Rock. The cast is filled with familiar faces from the comic and dramatic world. Heading this cast of clowns is Dick Van Dyke as the ambitious Reverend who forces the town to partake in the fight against cigarettes. “Cold Turkey” is filled with gags, most of which work, along with some genuine laugh out loud reoccurring jokes all told in a morality tale about greed and corruption. As the small town gets closer to their goal and the prize money, the small town mentality of decency gets swept up in the greed and fame. The townsfolk become TV celebrities and the town itself turns into a circus. The scene during the church sermon works great as the mayor looks directly into the camera and smiles, unable to contain his pride. The montage scenes of people attempting to quit smoking are also hilarious, watching what used to be staples of this small American town act like raving maniacs as they go through withdrawal is gut busting. “Cold Turkey” is also successful at painting a complex relationship with the reverend and his wife. The reverend puts on a facade of approachability to the townsfolk, but only seems to want to put up a front of perfection while his wife is the point of all his aggravation. The end of the film comes across satirical, but the wonderful dark comic touch works well here; no ribbons and bows, just a little of the truth and not much closure. Olive Films has included subtitles and a trailer as well as great picture quality and sound. Product Description: Cold Turkey, writer-director Norman Lear’s (TV’s All in the Family) satirical comedy, stars Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins) as Reverend Clayton Brooks, a minister in the small town of Eagle Rock, Iowa who takes up the challenge presented by ad exec Merwin Wren (Bob Newhart, TV’s The Bob Newhart Show), a mouthpiece for Hiram C. Grayson (Edward Everett Horton, Top Hat; Brazil) of the Valiant Tobacco Company: any city or town in America that can give up smoking for 30 days will receive a $25 million dollar check. Based on the addictive nature of the nation, Valiant is positive that their publicity stunt won’t cost them a dime. And so begins the comic tale of the residents of Eagle Rock and their struggle to butt out and grab the dough. The supporting cast of Cold Turkey is a veritable smorgasbord of comedic talent including Tom Poston (TV’s Newhart), Jean Stapleton (TV’s All in the Family), Pippa Scott (Auntie Mame), Vincent Gardenia (Moonstruck), Bob and Ray (Author! Author!), Barnard Hughes (Midnight Cowboy), Barbara Cason (TV’s Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman), Judith Lowry (The Trouble with Angels), M. Emmet Walsh (What’s Up, Doc?) and Paul Benedict (TV’s The Jeffersons). An Italian production made in the Philippines could only mean a match made in exploitation heaven. “Zombie 3” was planned as a sequel to the legendary “Zombie” and was destined to be a Lucio Fulci directed masterpiece. Unfortunately, an illness and unsatisfactory budget constraints played a huge factor in Fulci not finishing the film properly. Finished by schlock masters Claudio Fragasso and Bruno Mattei, the result is one of the most insane zombie films to land on home video. A military virus is accidentally released into the Philippines, creating a zombie epidemic. A group of soldiers and humanitarians fight to stay alive among the horde of bloodthirsty undead. “Zombie 3” is a mess, it's no secret, but for fans of bonkers zombie films it's nearly impossible to top. One can tell where the sinister touch of Fulci left and the forceful fist of Mattei took over. The former, some well-done scares including a ridiculous flying zombie head. The latter, machine gun spraying testosteroned soldiers laying waste to agile zombies. “Zombie 3” is a smorgasbord and for 90 percent of the film's runtime it's all entertainment; gore, action, insanity, bad dialogue, lifted plot points and lifted scenes... it's a wild ride. Truly dangerous film making is taking place here, viewers will without a doubt feel apprehensive for stunt men and actors alike as they fall from buildings and narrowly dodge machetes. The atmosphere comes in thick with fog and over lighting pouring onto the screen from every direction, slowly followed by hordes of the undead. It's an A for effort and entertainment and I'd rather not say its academic grade because it doesn't matter here. “Zombie 3” features a hilarious commentary with Deran Sarafian and Beatrice Ring, the duo have some laughs at the expense of the film. The old extras are ported over from the Shriek Show disc and a new interview with writer Rossella Drudi and co-director/writer Claudio Fragasso is included. If that doesn’t seal the deal for anyone, the awesome soundtrack is also included. Severin Films gives an amazing release to one of the most entertaining zombie films around. Product Description: Shortly before completing the sequel to his classic ZOMBIE, the legendary Lucio Fulci became ill and left the Philippines-based production. But when director Bruno Mattei (SHOCKING DARK) and writers Claudio Fragasso & Rosella Drudi (TROLL 2) stepped in to finish, the result became the most “insanely enjoyable” (The Lucid Nightmare) zombie romp in EuroCult history: After a deadly virus is stolen from a government facility, it will unleash a “wildly entertaining” (Realm Of Horror) combination of Fulci’s signature extreme violence, Mattei/Fragasso-style surreal logic, and big bloody buckets of goo-spewing mayhem that must be seen to be believed. Deran Sarafian, Beatrice Ring (INTERZONE) and Massimo Vanni (RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR) star in this “total blast” (Bloody Disgusting), now featuring a 2k scan and uncut for the first time ever in America. Also included is the CD Soundtrack to the film. Special Features: The Last Zombies – Interview With Co-Director/Co-Writer Claudio Fragasso and Co-Writer Rossella Drudi Tough Guys – Interview with Actors/Stuntmen Massimo Vanni and Ottaviano Dell’Acqua The Problem Solver – Interview with Replacement Director Bruno Mattei Swimming with Zombies – Interview with Actress Marina Loi In the Zombie Factory – Interview with FX Artist Franco Di Girolamo Audio Commentary With Stars Deran Sarafian and Beatrice Ring Trailer Bonus Disc: CD Soundtrack PLEASE NOTE: You can also purchase our Special Edition Zombie 3 Blu-ray at a discounted price in a Blu-ray Bundle which includes our Special Edition Zombie 4: After Death Blu-ray release (also with bonus CD Soundtrack), and our Special Edition Shocking Dark Blu-ray (with Extremely Limited Edition Slipcover). After working on “Zombie 3” and “Hell of the Living Dead”, Claudio Fragasso got his chance to direct his own zombie film. The result is a wild, gory action flick with plenty of crazy zombie carnage. Changed from its original title to “Zombie 4” it's no surprise the film doesn't relate to the 2 previous films much. A voodoo curse is released on an isolated island; the only survivor is a young girl. Years later our survivor returns with a group of Vietnam vets turned mercenaries. The island gives off the vibe of dread and horror and causes the past to be remembered by our protagonist in flashes. Soon enough the dead rise and the group must take refuge in a deserted hospital stocked with machine guns and grenades. “Zombie 4: After Death” fits into the same category as “Zombie 3” although with a little more singularity as only one director was at the helm instead of three. It’s bonkers, simply put. The setup is fast paced and gory enough to keep one entertained as we learn of the voodoo curse. This sub plot is a little forced, but not unexpected and probably the only similarity to the first zombie film. What keeps the audience engaged, besides the crazy stunts, is a decent bond between the mercenaries. They have some history and a fondness for one another. This helps the cheesy action scenes play a little better as characters are picked off. One of the most notable things in the film is the zombie's actions; not only do they run but they seem to retain knowledge from the past and even speak full sentences. If this doesn't cause one to reach for the off switch, it's smooth sailing. “Zombie 4: After Death” is a fun siege film with explosions, gnarly gore, a cool island location, and cheesy 80s style music. It's a blast. Severin Films has included an interview with the director Claudio Fragasso and writer Rosella Drudi; the two talk about the name change and the reshoots, among other things. They are as insightful and entertaining as their movies. Also included on the disc is a brand new interview with actor Jeff Stryker who is all smiles and candidly talks about his career. Severin Films brings another one of my favorite crazy movies to Blu-Ray in a great edition with the rocking soundtrack. Product Description: In between the celebrated insanities of ZOMBIE 3 and TROLL 2, director Claudio Fragasso (here under the name ‘Clyde Anderson’) and writer/collaborator Rossella Drudi put the penultimate batshit nail in the coffin of the legendary ZOMBIE series: When a white scientist’s cure for cancer enrages an island voodoo priest, it will unleash the ultimate plague of ninja zombies, exploding heads, appalling performances, eye-gouging, face-ripping, power ballads and big bloody mouthfuls of flesh-chomping havoc…and that’s just the first 20 minutes. Adult film superstar Jeff Stryker, Candice Daly (THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS) and Jim Gaines (ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD) star in this “ludicrously entertaining” (Ballistic Blood Bullets) Philippines-filmed schlock-fest, now scanned in 2k and uncut for the first time ever in America. Also included is the CD Soundtrack to the film. Special Features: Run Zombie Run! – Interview With Director Claudio Fragasso and Screenwriter Rossella Drudi Jeff Stryker in Manila – Interview With Actor Chuck Peyton Blonde vs Zombies – Interview With Actress Candice Daly Behind-The-Scenes Footage Trailer Bonus Disc: CD Soundtrack Severin Films – https://severin-films.com/ “Zombie 4: After Death” Blu-Ray – https://severin-films.com/shop/zombie-4-bluray/ Severin Films Bundle – https://severin-films.com/shop/zombie-dark-super-bundle/ "Shocking Dark" Blu-Ray Review (Severin Films)![]() Written by MrParka Severin Films brings “Shocking Dark” on Blu-ray to the states for the first time ever. Part “Terminator”, mostly “Aliens”, all rip off. A team of marines dubbed the “Mega Force” are sent on a rescue mission into a scientific facility where the inhabitants met their end at the claws of slimy water creatures. The team quickly realizes that they have more threats to contend with than just the sewage dripping muck men. Bruno Mattei made a career out of cash grabs and rip-offs as did many Italian directors. The result was usually something vastly entertaining (see “Hell of the Living Dead” or “The Other Hell”), but for every few of these there is a “Shocking Dark”. “Shocking Dark” aka “Terminator 2” is a movie that is so close to the films that it’s stealing from, it becomes a cringe inducing exercise in endurance. The film is often times unintentionally funny, with acting so bad it would made SOV actors blush. The characters are stereotypes ranging from surfers to worse, the dialogue is forced and racist although so silly it's inoffensive. Geretta Geretta is a small ray of light in the film along with some of the set designs. These bright moments are often darkened by the cloud that appears above one’s brain wondering how the film's production company didn't get sued. The special effects are cheap but forgivable and even fun at times. Try not to roll your eyes too hard as a major character introduces himself as Sam Fuller... Like the famous director?! God have mercy. It's not made incredibly poor, just too shamelessly for much credit to be given. “Shocking Dark” is great for some laughs but not good at much else. The picture quality is great, as is the sound with very minimal hissing during one short scene. The special features dive into the script writing process with screen writers Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi, they explore the process and how the project was commissioned. This feature is well worth checking out and makes one understand how such crazy films get made. Severin Films tackles another of Mattei’s classics, what’s next? Can we hope for “Robowar”, Bruno Mattei’s “Predator” and “Robocop” combination. Product Description: For director Bruno Mattei (VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN’S PRISON) and co-writers Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi (TROLL 2), their final – and most notorious – collaboration went beyond brazen plagiarism to become a fearless act of deranged genius: In this bravura rip-off of both ALIENS and TERMINATOR, a team of badass marines, a tough female civilian and an orphaned girl battle monsters beneath the Venice canals while being chased by an indestructible killer cyborg. Have we mentioned the overwrought dialogue, over-the-top performances and ultimate WTF? twist ending? Geretta Geretta (DEMONS) and Tony Lombardo (RATS: NIGHTS OF TERROR) star in this “schlockfest of awesome” (Cool Target) – actually released outside the U.S. as TERMINATOR II and ALIENATORS and never before available in America – now scanned in 2k from the Director’s Cut negative discovered in a Rome lab vault. Baartman was taken from South African home as a 21-year-old and shipped to Georgian London, where she would be caged and exhibited as a freak show. Presented semi-nude, her physique - especially her large buttocks - was the source of much curiosity. But as her 'fame' spread, so too did her exploitation... Centred on a remarkable performance by Cuban actor Yahima Torres as Baartman, Black Venus provides a bleak but barbed exploration of sex, science, race, colonialism and social attitudes. When a movie is hard to follow, do you find that to be detrimental or do you forgive it? Does rewatching it help you understand it better?
