By doing this, “Path of Blood” takes a nice blend of familiarity and mixes it with creativity to introduce an audience to something new and something beloved without losing them. The story of “Path of Blood” is a simple one; a wandering Ronin, along with two warriors, enter a forest surrounded in legend and death. It is up to the trio to survive and face off against the evil Shadow Clan. “Path of Blood” not only mixes a new style with an old love, but manages to mix its bloodshed with beautifully designed majestic paper animals and a wonderfully decorated forest. There is something intriguing when brutal violence is mixed with moments of beauty and tranquility. The way the fights and action are animated are a sight to behold, many times the background and foreground are moving simultaneously to create an intriguing and alive image that pleases the eye. The battles also include a cornucopia of violent deaths by various weapons including flying vice spiked balls that tear faces and flesh, spears, swords, and of course ninja stars. Clocking in at just over an hour “Path of Blood” never wears out its welcome. It’s a simple story done with a lot of handmade hard work that is vastly entertaining. Synapse Films has included the director Eric Power’s short that inspired the film, an awesome game concept trailer, and an informative making of where the director shows his techniques and why he decided to do the film. “Path of Blood” is a nice release from Synapse Films that showcases an interesting filmmaker. Plot Summary: Japan, 1614. War is over. Samurai displaced through defeat or reform wander the countryside as Ronin, seeking work where they can find it. At the edge of a forgotten village lies a path leading deep into the mountains. It is rumored the brave few who make it down the path will be rewarded with a life of freedom and purpose. However, none who have entered the path have returned. When a lone samurai sets his course towards the Path of Blood, unknown danger and terror awaits. Will his great swordsmanship be enough to survive? PATH OF BLOOD is the first animated film by Eric Power. Shot frame-by-frame in traditional paper stop motion (like the pilot episode of SOUTH PARK), the film boasts a unique visual style paired with a visceral tale of samurai, bandits, and deadly ninja. Many years in the making, this film is a love letter to the Japanese samurai genre, as well as a tribute to the ultra-violence of the LONE WOLF AND CUB series. It is one of the only truly scary movie experiences and one of King’s best 80s adaptations. The Blu-ray of “Pet Sematary” from Paramount was sorely lacking in the feature department as a lot of bigger titles are. That is why “Unearthed & Untold” is so important, to shed some light on the making of the classic. John Campopiano and Justin White, the directors, seemed to have left no rock unturned as far as the interviewees are concerned. The documentary includes not just the majors (with the exemption of Stephen King) but historians, friends of King, the creator of the actual pet cemetery that inspired the novel, greensman, set designers, extras, and many more. These people’s enthusiasm about the film, along with the stars' thoughtful recollections help create a place and time where “Pet Sematary” was made. The exclusion of footage from the actual film doesn’t hurt nearly as bad as one might guess. Instead of scenes there are artist’s renditions, behind the scenes footage, and production photos. These all help fill the gaps and might even be preferred. The film pays respect to Fred Gwynne by having everyone chime in about the legendary actor and his work on the film. Although Mr. King isn’t directly interviewed, some footage is included of him on stage talking briefly about his novel and the aforementioned adaptation. This again helps fill the huge gap King usually leaves in documentaries about his work by not participating. The horror fan interviews are kept to a minimum which is appreciated as fans usually only can say the same few things in these types of film. “Unearthed & Untold” is an extensive documentary solely about the experiences of the cast and crew of “Pet Sematary” done with love by huge fans. Synapse has included a nice slew of extras including, longer interviews, a commentary, and a podcast interview. The podcast is preferred over the commentary due to the dead air during the former. “Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary” is a nice companion piece to the classic horror film that should be picked up by King and horror fans alike. Plot Summary: It's true that sometimes dead is better, but for two New England filmmakers, the story of Stephen King's PET SEMATARY was far too alluring to leave buried. That's why John Campopiano and Justin White spent nearly five years seeking to uncover the story - from book, to film, to cult status - amounting to the most comprehensive look at the horror classic ever produced. UNEARTHED AND UNTOLD: THE PATH TO PET SEMATARY is both an in-depth independent documentary and celebration of King's classic tale of terror, told through the voices of cast and crew from the 1989 hit film, as well as locals in Maine - the place where it all started. In addition to first time ever interviews, tours of the many iconic locations used in the film and never-before-seen photographs and home video from the set, this film explores the impact PET SEMATARY has not only on horror fans, but scholars of Stephen King's work. Featuring interviews with director Mary Lambert, stars Denise Crosby, Dale Midkiff, Miko Hughes, Brad Greenquist, Andrew Hubatsek, Susan Blommaert, the Berdahl twins, Michael Lombard and MANY MORE! The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter (Brain Damage, Frankenhooker), 1982's Basket Case is perhaps his most revered - a riotous and blood-spattered midnight movie experience, now immortalized in a lavish new 4K restoration by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Duane Bradley is a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed, fleshy lump whom he carries around in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at the seedy Hotel Broslin, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation. But tensions flare up when Duane starts spending time with a pretty blonde secretary, and Belial's homicidal tendencies reach bloody new extremes. Filmed on a shoestring budget against the backdrop of 1980s New York (where the movie would become a staple of the infamous 42nd Street grindhouse circuit), Basket Case has clawed its way from its humble origins to become one of the most celebrated cult movies of all time. Their brief was simple: to direct an episode in which Silvana Mangano (Bitter Rice, Ludwig) plays a witch. Luchino Visconti (Ossessione, Death in Venice) and screenwriter Cesare Zavattini (Bicycle Thieves) open the film with The Witch Burned Alive, about a famous actress and a drunken evening that leads to unpleasant revelations. Civic Sense is a lightly comic interlude from Mauro Bolognini (The Lady of the Camelias) with a dark conclusion, and The Earth as Seen from the Moon sees Italian comedy legend Totò team up with Pier Paolo Pasolini (Theorem) for the first time for a tale of matrimony and a red-headed father and son. Franco Rosso (The Woman in the Painting) concocts a story of revenge in The Sicilian's Wife, while Vittorio De Sica (Shoeshine) casts Clint Eastwood as Mangano's estranged husband in An Evening Like the Others, concluding The Witches with a stunning homage to Italian comic books. Not sure if you've been asked this before but what advice would you give to someone thinking about starting movies reviews on here, especially this late in the existence of Youtube? It's been a dream of mine to begin those for possibly the last 10 years and things all falling into place where I'm seriously considering it again.
