Even before we are at our manor, our poor bride is ravaged. As the film progresses, the husband proves to be a sadist with a huge sexual appetite. It is soon revealed that the groom isn’t the only one in his family lineage that has a mean streak towards the opposite sex. Shortly after this is brought to light, a naked woman is found submerged in the sand and rescued. Our mystery woman seems to have a strange control over the new bride and resembles an ancient ancestor of the husband's with a sordid past. “The Blood Spattered Bride” is a strange gothic film featuring erotic nightmarish style with a splash of vampirism and a heavy helping of lesbianism. The latter two mixed only as European filmmakers seem to be able to do. The vampirism of the film is loosely based off of the novella “Carmilla” which actually predated Bram Stoker’s novel by 26 years. The film starts off slow but doesn’t stop it from keeping the audience’s attention due to its camera work, eroticism, interesting themes, and political motivations. The cinematography takes advantage of the lovely landscape of the beach and the ludicrous mansion, making both look wonderful in HD. One of the major themes of the film seems to lean heavy on woman’s liberation, directly relating to the years of oppression from the Spanish government and culture. This theme is shaken a little by the bleak and opposing ending, which makes it all that much more interesting. Does this ending make a statement on the outcome of those who oppose the tyrannical society? The slow start will surely be forgiven as the finale turns into a frenzied bloodbath of intensity and wonderfully haunting imagery. Plot Summary: Susan, a young bride, travels with her husband to his family’s ancient manor house in the far north of Spain. Susan is a virgin and is very hesitant about her husband's sexual demands. She is also disturbed by her unfamiliar surroundings and wonders if she will ever come to terms with her new married life. She is shocked to discover that all the old portraits of female members of her husband’s family have been locked away in the basement. When she finds them, she discovers that one of the portraits shows a woman holding a strange dagger. The woman’s face has been cut out of the painting. Her name is Mircala Karstein. This atmospheric, gothic horror story is widely regarded as one of the very best vampire films ever made. Controversial in its day for sexual content and for extreme scenes of violence and gore, it was widely cut on original release. This brand new version restores the film to its intended length and includes alternate scenes that have never been made available before. This is the first Blu-ray release of an acknowledged classic, one of Quentin Tarantino’s favourite films and an influence on his own Kill Bill. Great reviews as always! Please enter me into the pick-a-movie contest. Like me, you watch a lot of horror movies, has there ever been a movie that scared you so much as a kid that it took you years to re-watch?

I have heard from others that Italian films can be confusing depending on the director and how a movie plays out and I would have to concur with them. Do you find that confusing aspects of something such as The House by the Cemetery make it more intriguing or tend to be a hindrance?

Enter me in pick-a-movie, please. Do you have a favorite live musical performance in a horror/sci-fi movie? I miss those five minute scenes of a local band in a bar or club to pad the movie out. My favorite: Maybe Someday in Alien Factor.
