For a city to reach that category it has to attain a special level of crime. It needs a serial killer. Exhibitionists in cemeteries, peepers in parks, bank robbers, reckless drivers, rapists, murderers, all these Belgrade already has. For the city to be classified as a metropolis it needs the king of criminals: the strangler. Suddenly a series of murders takes place. A deranged flower seller is strangling women on the streets of Belgrade, their crime in his eyes being that they refused to buy his carnations. At last, the city has its own serial killer. Finally, it can attain the status of metropolis. A local new wave rock musician become obsessed with the murders and releases a single dedicated to “The Belgrade Strangler”. An outspoken female DJ condemns media interest in the case, arousing the ire of the Strangler himself. Gradually these three characters find themselves drawn together, leading to a surprising and bizarre climax. Directed by the award-winning Slobodan Šijan, one of his country’s most successful film makers, Strangler vs Strangler was controversial on its original release due to its mix of horror, satire and pitch-black comedy. Loneliness can be a killer... It's been weeks since Wendell has talked to anybody, and even longer since he's seen anyone... anyone who doesn't want to eat him. Friendship is hard to come by in the best of times, but in the apocalypse, beggars can't be choosers. So when Wendell crosses paths with Alex, who is searching for a rumored "safe zone", the unlikely duo work together to keep their hope of survival alive -- against both the living and the dead. Filmed on a micro-budget over a series of weekends outside a small town in America, visionary maverick director Christian Fescine's "Dead County" recounts the glory days of early Romero, Fulci, and Savini, and brings the zombie genre into a chilling - and darkly humorous - allegory on the 2020 Covid lockdown. The Swindle sees Chabrol at perhaps his most playful as a pair of scam artists, Isabelle Huppert and Michel Serrault, get in over their heads. But who is scamming who and who do you trust in a life built on so many lies? The murder of a 10-year-old girl sparks rumors and gossip in The Color of Lies, as suspicion falls on René (Jacques Gamblin) the dour once famous painter, now art teacher, who was the last person to see her alive. Enigmatic, perverse, seductive, Isabelle Huppert encapsulates everything that makes Nightcap a film John Waters calls "Cinematic Perfection" in this tale of suppressed family secrets. Finally, in The Flower of Evil, incest, old money and intergenerational guilt come under the scalpel as an outwardly perfect bourgeois family begins to unravel when the wife involves herself in politics. Though influenced by Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock and Jean Renoir, Chabrol's voice was entirely and assuredly his own, influencing in turn filmmakers like Bong Joon-ho, James Gray and Dominik Moll. His amused, unblinkered view of life and refusal to judge his characters makes his films timelessly relevant and accessible to all.
