The 1989 oddity was directed by Agustí Villaronga, the unique mind behind “In a Glass Cage” and “Black Bread.” “Moon Child” follows the story of David, a young boy who holds the ability to perform telekinesis. David is adopted by a strange woman and placed inside a school to find his limitations and reveal is true potential. David is an eccentric, even among his fellow gifted pupils and soon uncovers a dark underbelly to the school. He escapes with some cohorts and travels across country to seek shelter. “Moon Child” is based on a work by famed occultist Aleister Crowley; being unfamiliar with the source material makes “Moon Child” an even stranger world than intended. The film takes symbolism over storyline, aesthetics over logic, and style over substance; all while holding a strong, dramatic feel. Nearly every frame of the film could be considered a work of art, but as beautiful as it is the film, at times, becomes a chore to watch due to the ineptness. The film seems to drift scene into scene in a dream like fashion. Although done cleverly, it becomes jarring and confusing. The first half of the film seems to take an entire different look; a cold, white, and uninviting school creates a perfect tone for the first half and sets up what the institution is a symbol for. The second half of the film takes places in the desert; the bright yellows and heat create a burning dry feeling during the day scenes, showing the outside world is a nice touch and makes a great juxtaposition to the previous setting. The film’s mythology is deep and a little underexplored, even after the film leaves on a perplexing and interesting note. “Moon Child” is a unique film by an interesting voice. Never does the film look poor, but upon a first viewing it can be a bit underwhelming and overwhelming in the same breath; too much confusion and not enough connection. A trailer and interview with the director are included on the disc. The picture and sound are excellent and the film is presented in 1.85:1. Synopsis “Moon Child is the revelation of the Cannes Festival, a movie adventure, intimate and pernicious, mystical and sophisticated, where we feel the thrill of seeing the invisible with the magic of their images.” –Le Nouvel Observateur Inspired by famed occultist Aleister Crowley’s 1923 novel of the same name, Agusti Villaronga’s film centers around the extraordinary 12-year-old David (Enrique Saldana), who has been adopted by a treacherous scientific cult where extraordinary mental powers are common. He begins an archetypal journey across two continents with Georgina (Lisa Gerrard) to find his destiny as Child of the Moon. Coming on the heels of Villaronga’s unforgettable 1986 film, In a Glass Cage, Moon Child is a mystical fantasy film for adults, available for the first time in the United States on Blu-ray & DVD. Presented in a new High Definition transfer and boasting an unreleased soundtrack by the band Dead Can Dance, Moon Child is a thoroughly unique gift to cinema and music fans alike. THE VIOLENCE MOVIE: When a deranged killer (David Wilkinson) escapes from prison, he inexplicably invades the home of Joey Hammond (Joseph Shaugnessy) who must fight for his life in order to stay alive. Shot on VHS back in 1988 (with additional footage added in 2003) by a teenage Eric D. Wilkinson (who went on to produce Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth, Mischief Night, Sparks), the short was passed around on bootleg VHS tapes for years before the term "viral" ever existed. Almost 30 years later, this homage to slasher movies has been re-mastered, re-edited and re-scored (from none other than the legendary Friday the 13th composer Harry Manfredini) is now available for all to enjoy! THE VIOLENCE MOVIE 2: Was it real or was it a dream? For some unexplained reason Joey Hammond (Joseph Shaughnessy "The Violence Movie", "Generation X Live!") returns in this action packed sequel to The Violence Movie (with a brand new original score once again by Friday the 13th composer Harry Manfredini). This time the crazed serial killer (David Wilkinson "Jersey Girl", "The Violence Movie", "Generation X Live!") is relentless in his pursuit of the innocent Joey with 2 times the action, 2 times the gore, 2 times the body count, and 2 times the fun! It's the sequel in which you will keep asking yourself, "Why?" Bonus Materials Audio Commentary featuring star David Wilkinson and writer / director Eric D. Now, Peter and his friends have returned to the placid Wisconsin town to check out his inherited lake house and to partake in the annual ‘Muskie Madness’ fishing competition. So I noticed that Alejandro Jodorowsky box set and have to ask, how much of his work have you seen, any favorites, and what do you think of his films?
