The new disc is loaded with features and interviews with greats like Dario Argento. Made in the dying days of Italian genre cinema, this gothic and gory imaginative film doesn’t disappoint. A child named Sonia witnesses the brutal murder of her parents in Paris in 1900. Twelve years later Sonia moves to Italy and begins working in a wax museum. Strange disappearances are plaguing the town causing a reporter and police detective who worked Sonia’s parents’ murders to shift their focus on the curator of the museum. Does this strange curator have a dark past? Are the wax figures more than just recreations of violent scenes? “The Wax Mask” has a debatably a more interesting behind the scenes story than the one that takes place in the film. Originally the film was supposed to be the first Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento collaboration, to bury bad blood. Unfortunately tragedy struck when Fulci died in pre-production leaving the film somewhat tarnished. Special Effects artist Sergio Stivaletti stepped up to the plate and directed. “The Wax Mask” doesn't quite stand up to a lot of the previous Argento directed or produced features, but it does stand up to most certainty anything horror that came out in the same year, 1997. “The Wax Mask has a fairly obvious story, being based off previous wax figure horrors such “House of Wax” but the film thrives in its gothic style, splatter effects, and mad scientist tropes. The wax sets look great, featuring scenes from mythological stories like Medusa and from real crime scenes such as the murders of Jack the Ripper. The camera work is also solidly done by regular Fulci collaborator, Sergio Salvati. The opening shot mixes CGI with practical and, although a tad strange looking, it ends up being a nice tracking shot which reveals a brutal murder. The movie also features some really imaginative kills including one where a character must face his self. “The Wax Mask” sports everything you would enjoy in an Italian horror. Unfairly compared to previous efforts, this is somewhat of a nice gem that feels both like a product of its time and of yesteryear. Severin Films knocked this release out of the park in the features department. Included on the disc is a wonderful featurette entitled “Beyond Fulci”. In this doc Stivaletti, Argento, Giuseppe Columbo, and more remember the maestro and his final days. This is a very touching and interesting featurette and the highlight of the entire release. Also included on the disc is a commentary by Sergio Stivaletti and a series of other featurettes and interviews which include the composer Maurizio Abeni, actress, Gabriella Giorgell, and film writer Alan Jones. Plot Summary: In the mid-‘90s, Dario Argento approached a physically and professionally ailing Lucio Fulci to direct one final production, an over-the-top shocker about grisly murders at a Paris wax museum. But when Fulci passed away only weeks before filming began, Argento turned to Sergio Stivaletti – the FX genius on PHENOMENA, OPERA, DEMONS and CEMETARY MAN – to make his feature-directing debut. Original Grand Guignol director/performer Robert Hossein (RIFFIFI) and Aldo Massasso (CONTRABAND) star in what DVD Drive-In hails as “Old-timey luridness married to state-of-the-art gore.” From a screenplay co-written by Fulci with cinematography by Sergio Salvati (ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND), and now featuring a 4k scan from the original negative supervised by Stivaletti. Packed with Special Features that include rare behind-the-scenes footage, all-new interviews and more! Aging blonde-bombshell Anita Ekberg (La Dolce Vita, Pick-up Alley) gives a full-bodied performance as a sex-crazed sister with some seriously bad habits in the lurid cult classic Killer Nun. One of the most notorious 'nunsploitation' films, Killer Nun tells the sordid story of Sister Gertrude, a disturbed woman of the cloth who degenerates into a perverse mire of drug taking, sexual perversion, sadistic torture and murder. Joe Dallesandro (The Climber, Flesh for Frankenstein), Alida Valli (The Possessed, Suspiria) and the ample Paola Morra (Behind Convent Walls) offer spirited performances and able support to Ekberg, in this shocking tale based on real events. Boasting an incongruously classy score by legendary composer Alessandro Alessandroni (Women's Camp 119) and stylishly rendered scenes of sex and murder, Killer Nun takes the viewer on hair-raising journey from the heights of religious ecstasy to the depths of devilish degeneracy. Now Giulio Berruti's sleazy classic is presented in a stunning new 2K restoration, with a liturgy of new extras, ready to be preyed upon. The wines created by Dr. Elson Po have been known for decades as among the finest in the world, but unknown to the public, Po has been using his vintning and chemistry skills as a front for a much more sinister purpose; harvesting fresh blood from his youthful victims to produce an elixir designed to keep him young forever. Unfortunately, his special potion seems to be weakening in its strength and Po finds himself in need of fresh bodies. Deciding to use his connections to the film industry, he presents himself as a potential film investor and invites a group of attractive young actors and models to his secluded island mansion, with the intent of harvesting their life sustaining properties. When they arrive, Po becomes convinced that statuesque beauty, Jezebel, might be the ideal candidate from which more elixir can be created and sends his henchmen out with the task of violently killing off her friends. A wild late 80s horror film starring and co-directed, with William Rice, by character actor James Hong (Chinatown, Big Trouble in Little China), THE VINEYARD mixes just about every popular horror trope around into a non-stop assault on the senses. It's hazing season at Phi Up and the boys are up to all sorts of nasty pranks on their hapless pledges, in between regular bouts of 'wetting their whistles' at the campus watering hole…with some of the area's beautiful sorority babes. But this is going to be one literal 'hell week' as they unwittingly unleash the spirit of Acid Sid; an unfortunate pledge who was accidentally dissolved in acid during a hazing prank gone wrong some 20 years earlier. As the helpless fratboys and pledges fall victim to Sid's wrath and seemingly indestructible towering zombie corpse, it's up to the stragglers to figure out how to kill someone who's been dead for two decades, or die trying. A truly one-of-a-kind blending of post-Animal House T&A sex comedy and gore filled supernatural slasher, Paul Ziller's PLEDGE NIGHT unloads a nearly non-stop barrage of weirdness on the viewer. From the jaw dropping, all-based-on-actual-practices, hazing rituals, as meticulously researched by writer/producer Joyce Synder (Raw Talent), to the slimy and often 'explosive' gore, from effects wizard Dean Kartalas, along with a soundtrack performed by Anthrax, whose singer, Joey Belladonna makes a memorable onscreen appearance, PLEDGE NIGHT serves up a non-stop ride of horror and weirdness guaranteed to keep you glued to the screen, mouth agape. Vinegar Syndrome is excited to offer up this one-of-a-kind slice of sleaze on Blu-ray for the very first time, newly restored in 2k from its original 35mm camera negative. Architect Larry Andrews and his glamorous wife, Barbara, have just arrived on a Filipino island where Larry, and his business partner Del, are completing work on a new luxury condominium building. Del reveals that he's found them the perfect island home: a centuries old mansion nestled next to the forest. As the Andrews settle in, Barbara begins to sense a strange presence surrounding the house and is slowly possessed by Alma's vengeful spirit, who is determined to use Barbara’s body as vessel for her to re-enter the world and soon demonstrates that she has no concerns over murdering anyone who tries to stop her. The second film directed by Herb Freed (Graduation Day), BEYOND EVIL is a gothic inspired supernatural horror film, taking liberal inspiration from the castle-set Italian chillers of the 60s, but with a healthy dose of early 80s sleaze, including creative kills and outrageous optical effects. Starring John Saxon (Black Christmas) and Linda Day George (Pieces) and featuring a lush score by Pino Donaggio (Dressed to Kill), Vinegar Syndrome is proud to bring BEYOND EVIL to Blu-ray, newly restored in 2k from 35mm archival film elements. After being found in bed with another woman, Frederick, a retired mercenary, is blinded by his deranged and spiteful wife, who is then confined to an asylum. Deciding to start a new life and family with his mistress, Helen, but finding that he is unable to successfully impregnate her, Frederick consults with a fertility doctor who agrees to assist in helping them conceive a baby. But unknown to the happy couple, a member of a Satanic sect decides that Helen will be the perfect mother for the Antichrist and intervenes! A diamond in the rough of early 80s Euro-horror, then 72 year old filmmaker Ignacio F. Iquino's (directing as Steve McCoy) SECTA SINIESTRA, or, Bloody Sect, barely saw any kind of release outside of its native Spain, despite liberally 'borrowing' plot elements from Rosemary's Baby, with touches of The Exorcist. Brimming over with every key element of Eurosleaze, including surprisingly mean spirited and brutal killings, Satanic possession, loads of nudity, zoom-happy cinematography, absurd plot twists and a pounding score, SECTA SINIESTRA is long overdue to join the ranks of the craziest offerings from Bruno Mattei or Joe D'Amato. Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to resurrect this forgotten gem from Spain's sleaziest and most entertaining era in film production and presents the impossible to see SECTA SINIESTRA on Blu-ray for the first time, newly restored in 2k from its original 35mm camera negative.
